I thought I read that bad carbs, by entering blood stream too quickly thereby raising blood sugar levels, caused excess insulin release. Insulin Resistance aka Syndrome X aka pre-diabetic is the result of years of this unhealthy eating style causing our insulin receptors to "wear out" , so to speak, ergo....increased insulin in the blood stream for long periods.:crying: Am I correct so far??.....:plain: I believed the high levels of insulin caused my cravings. A physician said that was not true. If I'm craving just tough it out. Whadyathink? |

The role of insulin in blood sugar induced cravings/hunger, is not a theory. It's fact. Since we don't know your specific personal situation, it wouldn't be possible to guess what other factors the physician you consulted had in mind at the time. |

The brain has a sensing system that picks up insulin levels in the bloodstream and tells you to eat to increase those insulin levels, even though the brain is already getting plenty of blood sugar and of course, this all depends on the carbs you ate on your previous meal. This is what happens when we go overboard with the bad carbs. That's where the cravings come from. Dr. Sears has much information on www.drsears.com regarding this topic. I would ask for back-up information from your physician on why does he believe high insulin doesn't cause cravings... |

Thanks Queen and Susan for your responses. The doctor is an endocrinologists I saw to inquire about his weight loss program. He treats diabetics. His statement was - he has been in this field for many years and never heard of such a thing. (I've experienced it so I know it's true) I'm aware he considers his opinion to be the last word in truth. "I've taught all over for years...." Even when I told him there are scientific papers proving my statement he was not swayed. Please refer me to the papers where I can print them. Anything in any of the medical journals? Thanks |

Any time that a doctor starts out by backing up his "opinion" with "I have been treating blankety-blank for many years...", is a big signal to me that I need to find a new doctor. He has probably been in it TOO MANY years, and is not up to speed on current practice and research. I would find a new endocrinologist. |

I agree with Cranberrycat, a Doctor must show you "Back-Up" information especially since there's so many updates being published on a daily basis. "Being in the field for so many years" is the easy way out of the conversation. There's much useful information in www.drsears.com, you can do a search. Or even easier, just doing a basic search on Google (Witch is a world wide search) will bring up tons of information and updates regarding this matter. :-) |
