Measuring Glucose and Insulin

    Hi, I'm looking for ways to measure my reaction to certain foods and combinations other than simply seeing how I feel after 3-4 hours of eating the meal. What I have found so far is that there are easy ways to measure glucose ( http://store.yahoo.com/ehms1/compact.html ) but measuring insulin is quite a bit more complex. :shock: Can anyone let me know if the glucose meter would help, or also if there are any other good ways of mesuring the glucose/insulin/zone phase after having a meal. :wink:

    Unless you really need to monitor your glucose levels because you're diabetic (in some form ranging from hypoglycemic, pre, early or diabetic) I really don't recommend buying a glucometer . . . especially the one you posted the link as the test strips are expensive. I am in the fuzzy pre/early diabetes range and I only test my blood sugar levels once a day when I rise and use that as my benckmark for the rest of the day. teh only time I took it more than once a day was when I first meet with the dietician and that was two hours post meals to get a fix on how much and quickly my blood sugar levels peaked based upon what I was eating to help determine which unfavorable carbs I could get away with eating (or push over the 25% mark) and those I needed to avoid (or can at 25% or less). The best way to tell how food is effecting you is to keep a detailed diary of what you ate, how many blocks and then make notes after you've eaten of how you're feeling 3 to 4 hours after the meal. Once you keep this up for a couple of weeks you can compare your reactions and may be able to determine that you can't have a piece of rye toast with a plain egg white omelet, but if you added a little low fat cheese to the meal, you're fine. experiment and have fun with it, just don't get obessive over the process until you absolutely have to because you need to give yourself insulin injections with every meal.

One can have glucose wihin normal levels but not have insulin in the Zone. The only way I'm aware of to measure you insulin to determine if it's in the Zone is to have the fasting insulin blood test.
