My companion has GERD and has had it since he was 25. He is now 35. Since reading the Zone book I am assuming that this diet will either cure his GERD or diminish the symptoms. Am I right in this assumption? If I am, how does it?
I searched "Asked Dr. Sears" forum and found this:
Esophageal reflux (also known as acid reflux or heartburn) is due to excess acid production in the stomach. This acid production is profoundly controlled by good eicosanoids such as PGE1. It has been my experience, that acid reflux is usually brought under control within a week after starting the Zone Diet. Oils aren't the problem, a deficiency in PGE1 production is. I would suggest trying the Zone Diet for a week and then make your own decision whether to continue it.
Can someone please explain this more in depth?
Thank you,

[color=darkred:6e98ef768e]Actually that explanation is basically in depth. In simpler terms, the hormonal balance one acheives in the Zone usually eliminates GERD. This has been the experience of all the people I've helped in the Zone who had GERD. In fact one of those individuals also had Barrett's Disease for a number of years. Barrett's is a pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus resulting from GERD. This individual's most recent endoscopy results, after only 6 mos in the Zone, showed there is now no longer any sign of Barrett's.[/color:6e98ef768e] |

Dear Sue,
I was so glad to read your reply about GERD seeing that is a recent problem of mine. That gives me another reason to get back into the Zone. I was trying to Zone before but strangely things did not change very much. I had been having some bad blues also.
I went for some tests and have found that I had a major drop in my hormones levels (I knew that would come eventually) and also my thyroid was swollen and had a small nodule on one side. The GERD came on about the same time as the hormone drop. With the help of my two great doctors I am happy and energetic again. I bought the book, "The Anti-Inflammation Zone," and am ready to get started. It is good to know that the GERD will be gone soon. I also will be going to join my friends back at the gym and warm up my own treadmill now that I have my zip back. Thank God.
