Just wanted to share our Halloween story! My niece and nephew collected about 14 lbs of Halloween candy last night, and the thought of them eating this amount of candy for the next three months or so was our version of a Halloween nightmare! (Both children have weight issues and the youngest has been getting teased at school a lot lately, so we have been stressing healthy eating) So the question was, "How do we take away some of their candy without anyone getting upset?" Well, the answer was much easier than we thought! We offered to buy some of it from them, of course, we stressed that they could keep whatever they wanted and turn in the rest to get weighed for $$$$$. Surprisingly, we collected a total of 8 lbs of candy! The kids were trying to put more and more in to get the weight higher and higher. We told them with the money they could choose a new CD or some magazines, etc... and explained why we didn't want them eating that much candy. They were much more excited about turning it in then we had even expected and even better was that nobody was upset! They still have the option of turning in more if they decide to later. Our thought was, how much money do we spend making our children unhealthy (McDonalds, Wendy's, etc...) , why not invest a little to keep them healthy! Afterall, three months or so of unhealthy eating can do a lot of damage. Remember, it doesn't have to be just money that is offered. Maybe, a movie night with their choice of movies, or a game night or a promised activity of their choice! Whatever it takes! ~crumbelina

I'd likely collect the candy and eat it myself. Once a carbaholic, always a carbaholic :(

Great idea, Crumbelina!!! Way to turn this into a positive, and even a learning experience, without the negative connotations (I still hear my mother's voice calling me "thunder thighs"--and she's been dead for 5 years. ). Probably didn't put a huge dent in your family budget, but I am sure the kids found it worthwhile, and they still had the fun of trick or treating. We only got 3 kids at our house. It's sad that society has come to this--I remember spending hours and hours out with my friends and family, having a ball. Kudos to you! :) Ronica
