Wed June 20, 2012 I require about 13 blocks daily. I stocked up on Zone foods before they disappeared so you’ll see them in some of my meals and snacks. My meals are usually 2-3 blocks and snacks are 1 or 2 blocks; for the classic meals and snacks I keep a bit lower on the carbohydrate to accommodate my carbohydrate sensitivity. I’ve added approximate block amounts for those who count blocks. Breakfast: Brownie batter smoothie substituting raspberries for the cherries (3 bl) Recipe: SUE'S BROWNIE BATTER SMOOTHIE I'll add some specifics about the brands I like best for flavor and consistency, but no special brands are needed. This yields approximately a 3P, 2C, 6F meal, which is my usual Zone balance. Ingredients: 1/5 frozen organic (OG) banana 1 generous block frozen OG dark cherries, about 1/3 cup or 12 big cherries (I use Cascadian Farms, Trader Joe's or Columbia River Organics; I don’t stay in the Zone well with other brands of cherries.) 1 huge heaping T raw cacao (chocolate) powder, about 1/8 cup (not “Dutched”, which means not treated with alkali) 3 blocks Zone Protein Powder (3 scoops) ½ plus, tsp. turmeric (refer to info in “The Anti-Inflammation Zone” by Barry Sears) a very generous amount of cinnamon (cinnamon stimulates the efficiency of insulin) scant 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/8 to 1/4 cup of yogurt milk or chocolate soy milk, to help it blend better 1T Zone OG olive oil Directions: Blend (immersion blender works best) and enjoy! Snack: ½ Zone chocolate chip nougat bar (1 bl) Lunch: Zone bagel with light cream cheese and smoked wild-caught salmon, a few raw almonds (3 bl) Snack: hummus and deli turkey (2 bl) Dinner: Wild-caught haddock and roasted veggies with Zone olive oil (fennel, Vidalia onion, celery and a little bit of carrot) (3 bl) Snack: 1 slice toasted Zone cinnamon bread with almond butter (1 bl)

That's great, Larry! Actually the Zone cereal in the box is not the granola I was referring to. The one I ate is no longer being produced, but I have a few packages left (the one in the single serving packs, made with the molecular baking technology). |

Hi Sue I am confused about the way you add up your blocks; I thought it had to be 1 1 1 or 2 2 2 and so on. I am new, I just started yesterday and am having a hard time understanding the block rule. I have the books, but I still can't make sense of it. Can you offer some advise? Thank you in advance, Autumn |

Hi Autumn, If you're using the block method you begging with an equal number of P, C and F blocks. After you've been eating Zone meals consistently for 4-5 days use the hour hunger test. If you're hungry 4 hours after a Zone meal you'll need to fine tune. For hunger with good mental focus you'd add another carbohydrate block to each meal. For hunger with lack of focus you drop1 C block from each meal. Sometimes it's also necessary to add a few more fat blocks. I need to eat less carbohydrate and add some extra fat to prevent hunger. |
