Hi,
No, you're absolutely not too old for the Zone! There is no such thing as too old for the Zone. You merely have to adjust it to fit your body's needs at this phase of your life. I've been there, done that, as the saying goes, and am still in the Zone. Yes, it took a few changes, some trial and error, but it's possible, and well worth the effort.
I've always been carb sensitive to some extent, but now find I'm more so. To stay in the Zone I drop some carb at meals and add fat. I drop a little over 1/2 a block carb, sometimes a whole block, depending on the carbs I choose, and add 3 blocks (1.5 g each) of fat to every meal, keeping snacks the same balance as before (1P,1C,1F). Also I have to stick to mostly all favorable carb, and most of it from veggies, or I go out of the Zone. The unfavorable carbs that work best for me are corn, rye, and a couple of other whole grains. Unfavorable fruits, especially melons, (and even a couple of the favorable fruits...oranges and some varities of apples) take me out of the Zone, as do smoothies and liquids, even when they're favorable and balanced. It took a lot of trial and error to figure it out, but now that I have, it's great.
A food diary can be very helpful while you're tweaking things.
If you'd like to post some of the meals you've been eating , I'd be glad to offer suggestions to help.

Hi,
My comments:
You must have breakfast.
You need to add a snack somewhere.
All the carb in your supper is unfavorable (crackers, lima beans, and beer) which will prevent you from reaching the Zone.
I don't see any fat in your meals. I assume there was a little on the salad. Don't forget to add fat. It's very important.
Try to have more carbs from favorable veggies.
Once you read the book, it will get a bit easier. Have you seen the pics on this site of a day's worth of meals in the Zone? Try to make your meals look more like those. You can also go to the Food Block Guide in Zone Tools . The guide is a list of favorable Zone foods. To make a 3 block meal, simply choose 3 blocks of protein, 3 blocks of carb and 3 blocks of fat from the list.
If you have more questions, I'd be glad to help.

Hi Linda,
Strangely enough, I sat in a chat with Dr. Sears just last week when someone asked a similar question regarding carbohydrate sensitivity and menopause (and especially us peri-menopausal ones). The gist of what he said was that because the hormonal flux or lack thereof, the best place for us is to be in the Zone because menopause and carb sensitivity go hand in hand.
Thus if we control our intake of "unfavorable" carbs and supplement with Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil, we will be better off than our sisters that don’t.
Granted, keeping one’s unfavorable carb intake to not more than 25% of our total blocks per meal can be tough, but it makes a huge difference and for me anyways, allows me to have a bit of evil steamed white rice or rosemary potatoes or a few sprinkles of granted carrot on my salad and keep my blood sugar levels balanced. |
