Hi, I'm new to the zone. Have increased by 3 dress sizes in the last year and want to wear my clothes again. I have a few questions? First I've always been told that humus is protein, it's not counted as protein for the zone diet right? Also does this extend to other beans and lentils, that they are all carb and not protein. Also can you tell me the weight 1 block of tofu is, thanks Kirky <img src='desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> |

Hi Rachel Humus, beans, lentils are counted as carbs when you are doing the Zone. For one block of tofu - Silken tofu is 5ozs - Soft tofu is 4ozs. Have a look at the Helpful Tools to the right - in Quick Start Guide it lists the blocks for foods. And the 7 Day Meal Planner has a Vegetarian Plan for women. |

Welcome! Correct Rachel. Consider legumes to be carb for the Zone (do not count the protein in legumes), with the exception of soy. The typical 14 oz sealed tub of firm or extra firm tofu packed in water contains 5 P blocks. If you buy it in bulk, your best bet would be to use a kitchen scale to weight it. |

Thanks guys, the meal planner looks good. I have to soy zone book and am working my way through it but a lot to take in. Another question, what about fruit and herbal teas. I drink a lot of these, so should I count them? Thanks |

Fruit is a carbohydrate. Refer to the Zone food block lists for block sizes of fruit.
Herbal tea is fine; no need to count it.
If you mean herbal tea with fruit flavor, it's fine, too, as long as it doesn't contain cabohydrates (read the nutrition label on the tea). |

Hi sue, My name is sue also and i've been a zoner for a few years. recently, i've thoroughly enjoyed wine with my dinner and i know that 4 oz is 1 block. i also noticed that i've gained some weight around my middle. is it fair to say that if i substituted 2 cups of string beans for 2 glasses of wine, i'd lose the belly fat or is it all things created equal in the world of blocks. please let me know. i'm not sure it's the wine, it just may be my age. thanks for letting me know. |

Hi Sue Wine is ok to have - you just have to factor it into your meal as a carb. How old are you? It could be menopause if you are around the 50s. |

Hi Susan! The tighter you control insulin at each meal the better your results will be, even if you drink wine as part of your carb at dinner. I doubt that 4 oz of wine at dinner, worked in as part of you carb blocks, would cause you to gain stored fat. It's more likely that you need to tweak the type and /or amount of carb you're eating in your diet as a whole, to meet your body's changing needs. |

She did mention she was having 2 glasses of wine at dinner. Though it didn't contribute,as Sue said, you should limit your unfavorable Carbs to 1/3 or 1/4 of your carb intake during a meal. And if you are Carb sensitive, even that might be too much. So,as Sue stated, look at your overall carb intake and the TYPE of carbs - Fav or Unfav. |
