My 16 month old daughter was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. What supplements would be recommended for a one year old with her condition (i.e. fish oil, Sea Health Plus, etc.) and why? How would you suggest we modify the dose for a toddler?

What diet recommendations would you have for us to help control blood glucose levels and increase long term good health? We feel we're limited with diet due to her normal one year old pickiness.

    Thank you.

    Hi Heather,

I've posted the following reply to your same question in the other forum:

For specifics on dosage amounts for a 16 month old, I'd suggest you use the Live Zone Chat at the top right of this page.

Re her diet in the long term, simply keep offering her the best food choices. It is very realistic for a toddler to eat a Zone friendly diet. My 14 month old grandson has been doing just that since he started on solids. He eats meat and poultry, salmon, many fruits and veggies and even avocados. He absolutely loves guacamole. Keep offering her only the best foods, and also eating them as a family, and these will be the only foods she knows. You are in control of the contents of her diet. If she balks at certain foods, just keep offering them. It can sometimes take between 15 and 20 times of offering a food before a toddler will begin eating it (as I understand, this was actually demonstrated in a study somewhere). If she goes through a few weeks of only wanting to eat blueberries and chicken, then so be it. Given some time and patience kids will adapt to what is available to them.

Hi Heather, My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 14 months old. She is now 2 1/2 and is doing great. I would highly recommend that she get on an insulin pump. The pump allows you give give her small amount of insulin at a time. With shots the minumum amount dosage was .5 units which for a 16 month old is alot. The pump delivers insulin in .05 units intervals.

As you know you cannot force a baby to eat so if she nibbles on a snack you can still give her a small dose of insulin.

Good Luck and Pray for a Cure !!!

Another point to be made is that this is a good time to really teach good eating habits. I see so many older children who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, who have a really hard time adjusting to a new way of eating.

But, at this age, you are basically starting from scratch, so this is really a great time to start introducing healthy eating.

I hope you are all doing well!

Its really hard to deal with it and people have no idea about it so they don't care.Type 1 usually develops in children when the pancreas no longer produces insulin.
Insulin is the hormone responsible for carrying nutrients from carbohydrates into the cells. Without insulin, the cells don't get the energy they need to function properly.
we have to educate our children about the problems of Diabetes…I find an interesting way to educate our kids which is through medical comic books as they are attractive interesting and explaining various diseases in efficient manner so they will learn it quite easily. Hi Heather, The Zone would be ideal for your daughter. She would most likely have less swings and feel alot better(and so will you), she'll most likely take half as much insulin(which needless to say, means less side effects).
Go for it and good luck.
