Jennifer Grossman has an article in the current (Nov 24, 2003) issue of [u:c2627ba544]National Review[/u:c2627ba544] about the perils of our society's growing obesity problem. I do not apologize for the pun. The article describes a conference of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance which the size 4 nutritionist infiltrated. Along with other plus-size proponents, the NAAFA has created what Grossman calls "a culture of accomodation" in which "restrained eating is invariably described as 'starving', gluttony is defended as 'enjoying life' (even as it shortens it), and corpulence is euphamized as 'curvaceous'." But the issue of obesity in children, who only recently have shown affliction of Type 2 diabetes (no longer "adult-acquired"), is treated with particular attention: [b:c2627ba544]"We do our children no favors when we downplay the dangers of obesity in the interest of safeguarding self-esteem."[/b:c2627ba544][/size:c2627ba544] For now, the entire article is only available in the publication's dead-tree version or on NR's subscription digital site; I'll post a link to the piece if and when it goes cyber.

If, as they say, "you are what you eat", then I am fast, cheap, and easy.

Forgive another posting of shameless self-promotion, but here is another school nutrition story[/color:47a4a81c0d] I've been following.

Keep em coming, Adam. Boy that's a dilemma. Nobody likes being told how to live, but we've got kids with adult-onset diabetes for crying out loud. The schools aren't doing any favors by feeding kids crap that keep the cycle of bingeing going. Considering my tax dollars are going towards programs that fund the treatment and research into diseases that are the result of the consumption of these same foods, I'm perhaps a little more lenient with respect to intervention in this area--especially since I'm going to be paying for some kids dialysis. Of course, replacing sodas and fries with diet drinks and soy would be an absolute disaster, and if that's the direction the Connecticut state legislature is going....than maybe such decisions are best done locally.

Hi, I've been following this closely, since I live in CT. IMO, some progress is better than none, and if she (Rell) signs it, it's definitely a step in the right direction. As the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day.[/color:b0b009ba75]

I agree, Sue, that the progress of the proposed Junk Food Ban is better than none. But I don't dig the fact that diet soda and "sports" drinks are considered healthy by the "Wellness Committee". Anyway, it looks like it's bebing vetoed. I see New Jersey[/color:7bf55a3a1c] has become the latest state to lock out the garbage dealers.

The truly sad thing is that years of the intellectual-lazy labeling of low-glycemic load diets such as the Zone as [i:010ad4143a]fads[/i:010ad4143a] has people scrapping what truly works, and when mainstream nutrition attempts to recommend essentially the same (a decade later), its ignored as more meddling nutritional advice that doesn't work. People have thrown in the towel.
