Anybody had any luck figuring this fine product into their Zone diet? I'll sip on it without too much guilt, but I haven't done much in the way of experimenting with it as part of a meal or snack.

Personally, no, but hubby does the soy thing (although he's an Edensoy fan) and we've found that the amount of sugar added to make it palatable sends it way off the radar. Don't know if silk is the same. Can you post nutritional information? Ronica

Hi, The plain variety first on the list and the vanilla just after it are more or less Zone balanced, but none of the others are. The unsweetened variety farther down on the list is missing carb, but it could work if mixed with fruit (like in a shake) or eaten with some carb. Remember that liquids won't keep many individuals in the Zone as long as solids due to their large surface area (digest quicker than solids and can tend to spike blood sugar in some individals). You'll just have to experiment to see what works for you. Sue

Now THAT'S a pretty good idea (adding psyllium to slow down absorption). Thanks for the tip.

I've actiually tried that in the past and I still couldn't stay in the Zone. I use psyllium seed husk daily, also interchanging it with a powder composed of 5 or 6 soluble fibers, but neither has helped liquid snacks, nor meals containing a significant amount of liquids, to keep me in the Zone. Just my particular unique digestion and metabolism I guess. Sue

Hi gorooster, I love Silk Soy milk. I normally use plain because it has less carbs and I usually mix it with Soy protein powder (Spirutein) and frozen or fresh fruit which is where I get the rest of my carbs. [b:e7f0e47597]One cup of soy milk, 1 scoop of powder, 1/3 cup fruit, and about 10 ice cubes. Blend all ingredients in an ice crushing blender to make a great shake with the consistency of a smoothie. [/b:e7f0e47597] If I use whey powder with less carbs, I can add more fruit and fructose for a sweetener (Try Splenda for a sweetener if you are not against that; I try to stay away from it!) I then eat 10 almonds on the side for added fat. The percentages listed below show that the shake is more or less in the Zone. ( I use a little less than a full scoop of powder to keep my protein around 21 grams.) This shake is yummy if you don't mind the taste of soy. I personally now prefer it and look forward to my shake each morning. It will usually keep me until lunch unless I have to eat a late lunch, in which case I eat 1/2 of a Zone Perfect bar to hold me over. My husband and I sometimes split one at night for a snack. (It satisfies my craving for ice cream!!) If he has 2/3 and I have 1/3 that usually works for a zoned snack. I'm going to try adding Psyllium husk to the shake and see if that makes a difference for me. Hope you try it and enjoy it as much as I do. If drinking soy milk, it is better to drink skim because the fat in soy is Omega 6. Here is a question and answer from Dr. Sears re soy milk: [quote]Soy milk Posted 09/21/1999 Asked By: Priscilla D. Dear Dr. Sears: Before starting the Zone diet my husband and I used soy milk on cereal for breakfast. I was encouraged to increase soy intake to decrease the effects of menopause. Now, it seems we are eating well (loads of fruits and veggies), but no cereal and hence no soy milk. Is there a way to use soy milk, and how does it stack up in the carb/protein block system? (We use Light Vitasoy.) I've lost fifteen pounds so far (since July 4) and am very encouraged. Weight loss has slowed this week, but we will be back in our routine again soon. Thanks, Priscilla D. Dear Priscilla: Just use the soymilk as a beverage at any meal. Eight ounces of soymilk, like regular milk, will contain one Zone block of protein and one Zone block of carbohydrate. It is also an excellent source of phytoestrogens. Look for my special report on phytoestrogens coming soon to drsears.com. Dr. Barry Sears[/unquote]

Good to know! What brands of soy milk are skim? and do you have to look for them in health food stores or do some grocery stores carry it? Debbie
