Not so fair - fare food: OR What NOT to eat! . A local newspaper columnist (Nashua, NH, USA) decided to take a look at some of the food fare at local fairs (festivals), as we are in the beginning of the fare season in New England. . And topping the list at #1 is the latest from Texas - fried butter: Take a golf-ball sized scoop of frozen butter, wrap it in some dough, drop in (lard or veggie oil most likely) to fry. Yummy. This "delicious" ? death ball will only cost you $8.00 (USD) !!! . Here's some other really tasty and healthy (NOT) treats showing up: . The Craz-E-Burger: A hamburger patty, slice of cheese, and strips of bacon - wait, that's not it - Are you ready? - Sandwhiched between two honey-glazed doughnuts! Meal and desert all-in-one, umm, umm, good (ness no!) . Chocolate covered bacon on a stick Deep fried PB&J and banana sandwhich Spaghetti & meatballs on a stick Fried pineapple on a stick, dusted with powdered sugar Fried Coke (I have no idea, all the article stated was "Don't ask") & I won't! . Any wonder why USA is so obese and unhealthy . . . . . . Any one for a green salad on a stick? I am ready for one, lol

Salad on a stick...good one, ha! I heard about that fried butter ball recently, too. "Craz E" is right. I understand that glazed donut burger was introduced at The Big E last year http://www.thebige.com/fair/index.asp. I read in The Hartford Courant this week that this genre of food is younger male adults and people in general who want to flaunt it in the faces of “the food police". At first glance you'd think that but for the potential for disease and the deplorable eating habits these foods promote, they would seem relatively harmless otherwise, just part of a fun time at the fair, but just stop and consider, for a minute, the less obvious ramifications of the inflammation caused by these poor eating habits, the other "ills" of the world that people don't associate with diet, things such as the financial state of today's health care system, things like violence, war, etc. It’s something to think about. It’s crossed my mind what role, if any, diet might have played in the deaths of those 9 people who were killed at work in CT, by a coworker, yesterday morning, just 5 miles from where I live.
One thing I know for sure is I won't be buying any fried butter balls or Craz E Burgers or any of that stuff. |

I would have to research it, but I think I have heard of the "fried coke on a stick". If my memory serves me well, I believe it is a bread/cake batter with soda added to it, then it is dipped onto the stick and deep fried.
I have a friend who makes soda cakes all the time. She makes an orange soda cake.
Sure, there is a ton of unhealthy food at the fair. But, in Wisconsin, our local county fair also promotes "milk chugs", which are 8-oz serving sized jugs of milk. That isn't so bad, now is it? If I can find the salad on a stick, I think I will enjoy the milk chug along with it. YUM! |

I had the pleasure of tasting Fried Coke, as well as Fried Oreos, at the Texas state fair and rodeo in Houston. However, Fried Butter, that's somebody's idea of a joke I do believe. Maybe it's a weird menu thing for flare, but I seriously doubt it's ordered often. Sounds easy enough to make, but just cause it can be made, doesn't mean people will want it.
Fried Coke tasted like a donut dipped in coke... i'll never have the pleasure of trying it again HOPEFULLY!!! |

I'm a new comer to the Zone and am still learning to control my past-life cravings The state fair is currently underway here in Columbia, SC and all the above culinary catastrophes were present. Though I never had the urge to embrace the Doughnut Burger, I do have to admit to splitting fried Snickers and Oreos with my wife. So tasty...so bad. I'll try better next time. |

Hi Allen -- welcome to the Zone ... I think you did just fine at the fair -- kudos for splitting the treats with your wife! I think as long as we eat Zone-favorably most of the time, we can give ourselves these occassional treats -- as long as we keep them as exceptions, and not the rule, we'll be fine . Laurie |
