    Hi!

Seems, like I'm getting something of a reputation here for shopping at Whole Foods Market. Well, surprise! I also shop at Trader Joe's (and a couple of local chain markets, too)!

As I was shopping at Trader this morning, it got me thinking of all the recent convenience food qns here. Thought I'd share some of my favorites from Trader Joe's. These are the ones I bought this week, all TJ's brand, Zone friendly, and most of them are convenience foods.

    OG Plain Non Fat Yogurt
    OG Mint Tea Melange
Chipotle Lime Grilled Chicken Breast Strips
frozen avocado halves (vaccuum sealed in a box)
    frozen Asian Vegetable Stir-Fry mix
frozen Fire Roasted Peppers and Onions
    frozen broth glazed chicken tenders
    frozen marinated steamers (clams)
    frozen ahi tuna
    frozen medium sized tiger shrimp
    frozen Berry Medley
    refrigerated Caesar Salad Dressing
    refrigerated Low Fat Parmesan Ranch
refrigerated Champagne Pear Vinaigrette with Gorgonzola
    Egg White Salad With Chives
    Extra Firm Tofu
    Crunchy Almond Butter
    Enchilada Sauce
    Chunky Salted Peanut Butter
    refrigerated Steamed Lentils
Guacamole Topped With Spicy Pico de Gallo
    Turkey Kielbasa
goat cheese (not TJ's brand, but one with more protien then than most brands)
    Marinated Mozzarella
    Chicken Marsala (prepared meal entree)
Sweet Italian Style Chicken Sausage (fully cooked)
Roasted Garlic Chicken Sausage (fully cooked)
Smoked, Apple Chardonnay Chicken Sausage (fully cooked)
    Mozzarella Flavor soy cheese

All that food sounds wonderful! Now if we could only get TJ's to move to Idaho, I'd be happy. I used to shop there when I lived in California. They had such interesting foods. I couldn't wait to go and see what was new. The nearest TJ's is in Seattle, about 500 miles away... :-( We were supposed to get a Whole Foods, but then the economy tanked and I guess they lost the contract or whatever, since I haven't heard anymore about it

Sue, why you don't post your recipe cooking on youtube? Its much better to see how to do it than just look at your pictures.

It's good with saurkraut, and some applesauce on the side. Grillling also works.

BTW: Was inspired by your recipe for TJ's Chicken Chardonnay Apple sausages, & lentils! This is going to be a such a quick an easy meal to prepare for dinner one night this week!! I ended up picking up their Balela Middle Eastern chickpea salad. Very tasty! Added it to a bed of mixed greens and had it with some grilled salmon and watermelon for dessert!

    You're welcome!

Thanks for chick pea salad meal tip!

Also, you can change the lentil meal by switching the flavor of sausage you use. I like it with TJ's Roasted Garlic Chicken Sausage and a little sauteed onion and celery mixed in,, adn also make it with TJ's Italian Chicken Sausage with Sweet Peppers. I like TJ's premade foods because they're simple and delicious, and many have Zone friendly ingredients (but you have to look closely at the ingredient labels). Today I'm having TJ's Chicken Marsala prepared meal and adding yellow squash with fresh apricots for dessert.

    Hey Sue,
Glad you got an idea from me (for a change)..lol...
Hmm,I've been thinking of making something with the Mango chicken sausages...maybe something tropical and light. Any thoughts??
BTW: Just received my first shipment of Zone Bars. Since it was really ho today, they seemed a bit soft when they arrived. Popped them in the fridge, hope they'll be okay. Do you ever freeze them?

    :-)

IDK on the TJ's Mango Chicken Sausage. I haven't ever bought them becasuse, If I'm remembering right, they contain too many carbs (unfavorabel at that!). I wouldn't put tropical fruit with them because that would be adding even more unfav carb. You'd have no chance fo staying in the Zone then.

The bars, I froze one once...too hard to bite into!

Thanks for your thoughts regarding the Mango Chicken sausage.

As for the Bars, they seemed fine once refrigerated since they were soft upon delivery. Purchased the sample pack. Do you have a favorite flavor?

Hard question. I started to type in my favorites and listed almost all of them, lol. My top 3 favorites are Sweet and Salty Nut Curnch, Cocoa Crisp, and Chocolate Fudge, but I like them all!

Which sample pack did you purchase?

BTW: Made the lentil salad recipe last night w/ the Trader Joe’s Chardonnay & Apple Chicken Sausage. So easy and delicious..perfect for no cook dinner! I had a black plum for dessert! Any other ideas like this?

Sure, lots more ideas in my meal photos (link in my signature)! Yesterday I made a quick meal with minimal cooking, a scramble of browned Soyrizo (soy choriso), TJ's Soy mozzarella, egg whites, kidney beans and olive oil (took 5 min), and with it had some sliced tomatoes and a sliced plum. I'm going to add a photo of it to my album.

For a 3 block meal: use 1 block each of Soyrizo, cheese and egg whites, plus 1/2 block of kidney beans, and cook it in a couple blocks of olive oil; serve with tomatoes and plums enough to equal 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 more blocks. My adjusted balance is 2 C blocks in a 3 block meal, so I use 1 whole tomato (1/2 C block)and 1 plum (1 C block). Enjoy!

Hi Sue, I always use recommendations from your mails, but taste of your food is not good, also I bought some food from Trader Joe's and I don't like it. Frozen avocado - taste as boiled. Sausages are sweet and taste is not real, except garlic sausages, turkey kelbasa is too salty. I use and like this store long time ago,soy mozzarella cheese is really good...from what you recommended.

    Hey Sue,
I have always wanted to take some "pre-marinaded" baked tofu and add to a salad. Figured it would make a nice and easy lunch for work. I noticed the ones at Trader Joe's are a bit high in carbs..have nay suggestions/recipe for how to make this work?

    Hi trixie,

I don't know. I don't purchase marinated tofu because of the additional carb. Most of the carb in my diet comes from veggies and fruit.

    Hi trixie!

I actually have a "pre-marinated" baked tofu by West Soy that has only 1carb per serving. I bought the Thai flavor. It has 5g fat and 9g protein per serving! I'm not sure if they sell that at Trader Joes. I don't have one near by. I just bought it at Woodmans...not sure if you have one of those.

Thanks for the tip Sarah! I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Two of those servings with some veggies added would be about a 3 block meal. Sounds good.

Yeah, thank you Sarah..I'll have to keep an eye out for that brand. BTW: What is a good dressing that doesn't have much fat? (since I have the fat in the tofu)

Depending on what kind of tofu and what's on the salad, I'll either just use balsamic vinegar and some fresh herbs or if it's more of a thai tofu I use a mix of liquid aminos (which is like soy sauce just with less sodium- Bragg's is the name brand), water, wasabi(sometimes) and ginger (I like fresh, but you can use powdered also). I don't typically purchase fat free dressings, so I can't help you with any name brands.
    Hope this helps!

For all you TJ's lovers, don't forget about their frozen pre-cooked steel-cut oatmeal! zap it for 4 minutes and whip up some scrambled eggs for protein while you're waiting, easy and relatively portable 5 minute meal!

Trixie, don't worrry about the fat in tofu...just add your usual blks of fat. The zone accounts for the fact that some foods have fat...unless it's a high fat food, like full fat cheese.

Hi, I checked out those frozen steel cut oats when I was in Trader Joe's today. I'd say go easy with those because, in addition to steel cut oats, there are some unfavorable ingredients in them (brown sugar, rolled oats, and, if I remember right, maple syrup also). I decided to pass on that item in favor of 100% steel cut oats.

Another favorite at our house is "Trader Joe's Cage Free Fresh Hard-Cooked Peeled Eggs". For a delicious classic Zone snack just cut two eggs in half, pop out the yolks and fill each half with 1T hummus. Takes less than a minute to make. We like TJ's "Fresh Made Original Hummus Dip" (very Zone friendly fat, and cheaper than any other hummus I've found). I have a serving scoop from Pampered Chef that holds 1T and makes it very easy. It’s the type of scoop where you squeeze the handle and the contents of the scoop drops right out.

    And another...

I especially love to use their prepared packaged cooked meats. They make delicious easy Zone meals with the addition of some Zone favorable carb and monounsaturated fat. Be sure to check the fat and carb on the labels to be sure you're choosing the low fat, good fat and negligible carb, Zone friendly varieties.

Thanks so much, Sue, for this thread. I printed a list of the items you mentioned here and take it with me when I go to TJs. It gives me a direction (not to mention a clue) when I go shopping. Without the list, I tend to loiter endlessly trying to figure out which products are good for zoning.

I get the West Soy milk at TJs, as well.

You're welcome Cici! That place is full of lots of Zone friendly foods, and many excellent values, too. The one I shopped at yesterday had 3 pound bags of georgeous Gala apples, sized just right for the Zone, at only $3.99 a bag ($1.33 a pound). That's less than half the price as compared to stores and organic orchards here.

It is a shame that TJ stores are not more plentiful. For us in Wisconsin, there are only 2 in the entire state, none of which are anywhere close to where I live.

But, fortunately, I am pretty sure we can get apples at our local orchard pretty close or even a bit less than that.

I miss TJ's too! There was one down the street from where we lived in VA, but now that I'm in Naples, FL.....the closest one is in Atlanta, GA!!!

I can't complain too much though. A Whole Foods Market opened up last year just 1 mile from where I live!

I like the quality, convenience and the prices of their food. The closest one to me is a little over a half hour drive away (when there's no traffic over the river), but small 'price' to pay, as I see it.

When talking about a 1 1/2 hour trip to go to a specialty food store, that is a different story. That is really more of a day trip, 3 hours driving time, plus an hour or so to shop, and then you are also talking planning a meal away from home. I would love to have that kind of time on my hands!

Sue, maybe you need to take a chill pill (LOL). I wasn't directing my post at you. I was merely sharing my difficulties in traveling to a specialty grocery store. Ummm, sorry if you took it the wrong way.

    LOL! (read those labels!)

My grandson, that'd be a trick to get us both together at once. He lives 10 mi. outside of DC, and I'm a few hundred miles away in northern CT. :-) I'll be seeing him again in a few more weeks. Can't wait till I get there!

I hear you. I consider it one of my 3 or 4 regular grocery stores (Stop&Shop, Trader Joe's Whole Foods and a local mom and pop chain called Highland Park Market). I go to TJ every few weeks, WF a bit less, when I start running out of things from there. S&S (big chain in the Northeast) carries lots of OG veggies, eggs, etc. I eat OG as much as posible on the recommendation of my doctors (I'm a 7 yr breast cancer survior and want to keep it that way, YEAH!).

lol, Sharyn, that's kind of funny! I used to live in Va about 10 minutes away from one, and I think I was only there like once. I've only recently rediscovered it since I moved to Wa and work right next door to one......okay.....I thought it was funny.....

Sue, thank you for the additional items list! I found a bag of the gala apples you mentioned when I went to TJs yesterday. They're just the right size for a zone serving. I also tried the egg white salad. It was really good. It's a breeze to put lunch together with some of these pre-packaged products. The lunch meal is usually where I get stumped for ideas. The other day I made the deli meat wraps with the hummus from TJs - omg, that was so tasty.

You've definitely helped me expand my food and meal possibilities.

    Thanks again.

    You're welcome!

Yes, doesn't it make things easy? That's 1 of those apple for 2 C blocks. One of my a favorite quick meal salads is their prepared Teriyaki Grilled Chicken (it's one oz to a block of P, even though it's cooked chicken) and assorted greens tossed with their Caesar Dressing, the one in the refrigerated section that has 5 g F (3 blocks) in 2T (they have one on the shelf too, but it has more fat). Just add carbs to it, a little more fat is you like, etc. I had it for lunch today with some leftover cucumber and veggie stew/soup, strawberries, and a few peanuts. For lunches, I usually scrounge around in my fridge on the spur of the moment, whether it's lunchtime, or early morning and I'm getting it together to bring with me for lunch.

    Hi Sue,

Quick question for you on accounting for blocks on the TJ Chicken Sausage.

I pulled these nutrition facts on it, and I wanted to check to be sure that each link would count as 2P and 2F. Is that right?

That particular one would be 2P and 2F. You really have to look at the lable on each particular variety you purchase, because they all differ.

    Hey Sue,
I was at Trader Joe's and picked up the Guacamole in the vacuum pack(based on your recommendation). My question is,how do I keep it fresh to use through-out the week? I mean, will it get brown when I open it like a fresh avocado? How long will it last once open?
    Thanks!

It gets eaten witthina coupel days at my house. If you're talking about the kind in the plastic bags, I cut off the tip of the corner of one end, squeeze it out from the opposite closed end, and sort of roll the time and clamp it tightly with a clip to store for the next time. The ony brown part ends up being right near the cut corner. It's not much at all and can be easily wiped off prior to the next use. If you really want to try to prevent even that small amount of browning, you could try squeezing lemon juice on the opened area.

Lemon juice is the answer for that kind, too. I squeeze some over the top and press plastic wrap right down against it. If you have no air spaces between the guacamole and the plastic wrap, it won't brown over a couple of days time.

Another TJ trick - they have a prechopped Mirepoix (carrots, onion, celery) that is only 2 blocks for the entire container. I saute it in a tsp of olive oil with 6 oz of lean meat then add 4 additional carb blocks and a couple cups of low sodium stock. I have 2 fully balanced 3 block meals, and very little chopping!

Hi all you Zoner's out there..I totally agree with you about Trader Joe's. Not only are their prices VERY competative but they also carry many of the ingredients for preparing your own Zone meals. I have been on and off the Zone diet for at least 10 years now. I've tried Jenny Craig and I did lose several pounds but started packing it back on because I got board with the foods. I've also done Suzanne Sommers, which I love as well because her receipes are very rich and satisfying. The Zone diet is always the one I come back to because IT WORKS, my cravings for FOOD deplete and it makes me feel healthier. I work out on a regular basis but working out isn't everything. I think it's true what they say that 90% of what your body looks like is attributed to what your putting in your mouth and the other 10% is fitness/activity lifestyle. I can honestly say, that at 52, I'm in better shape than alot of women my age I know. Zone diet is a little bit more work in that you have to do your own food preparation unless you can afford their delivery option but many of us aren't movie stars and we can't afford that luxury or the luxury of having a chef prepare our foods for us. Everyone is busy but what's more important than your health and how you feel everyday??. I truely believe in prepping your foods on the weekend to get ready for the week and cooking "batches" of things to have them ready and to avoid "temptation". I want to have my bikini body this summer (I wouldn't wear it if I didn't look good wearing it, believe me) and the Zone ALWAYS gets me there. It's REAL food science. A little bit more "work" but nothing good comes easy. ...

Hi Tammy! Welcome -- and congrats on being in such great shape! And thanks for your tips about planning -- I KNOW how important that is -- I always do so much better when I plan in advance. I'm just not disciplined enough to do it consistently (which is very very strange, since in all other aspects of my life I'm very organized and disciplined. I think there's a subconscious thing going on there when it comes to food, which I'm working through ... ) .

I'm originally from NY, and I have to say, as happy as I am in FL, I miss Trader Joe's ALMOST as much as I miss my family up north (sometimes more ;-) ... ).

Sue, thanks for the list. I could spend hours in Trader Joes! I prefer to go during the week, because on the weekends one can't even look at the items because they are so crowded. I also love their pasta sauces, (make my own, but the jars are quick during the work week), aioli garlic mustard sauce to dip luncheon meat or cheese in, and also the New England Sea Scallops. I also picked up some roasted peppers and onions for convenience and put together some fajitas with sliced, sauteed chicken breast, and I think Trader Joes has the best frozen chix breast. We also like their Marsala Wine sauce for a quick meal with chicken. Low fat, Zone friendly, and loaded with mushrooms.

    Me too Mari! :-)

I've discovered I still need to look at the labels very closely, to make sure it contains Zone friendly fats. Gotta avoid those omega 6 vegetabel oils. :-) This has prevented me from buying many of their pasta sauces (lots are made with added soybean oil).

I made my weekly trip to Trader Joe's today and stocked up on lots of goodies. I love the various types of hummus that they have, especially the 3 layer hummus. I bought a new one today that is made with olives, so we will see how that one tastes! I recently discovered a frozen seafood blend that includes shrimp, bay scallops and calamari that I have been using in recipes to put over spaghetti squash. Another wonderful line of products is their salsas and I enjoy their pineapple salsa. As a treat with my turkey chili, I will also have a few of TJ Flaxseed Vegetable Tortilla chips. They are to die for! Last but not least, I have started buying their 0% Greek Yogurt...SO much more reasonable than the Fage and Chobani that I used to buy! I <3 Trader Joes!!

The marsala wine sauce is not a pasta sauce. It is a brown marsala sauce for marsala chicken. I am not sure, they were out of it last time, but I don't think it even contains oil. As far as the pasta sauces, the one that I have is Rustico, and it says it has imported olive oil, and canola. Ultimately, I make my own most of the time, but sometimes convenience wins.

Emily, I also like their Greek yogurt, but it is a 45 minute drive for me, so I can't stock up too much on it. I also have bought the seafood blend and made lo-mein with it with lots of veggies - but I do the stir fry on my gas grill outdoors since I am a messy cook, and don't care if I make a mess outdoors.

Sue-Sorry for the delay (i really need to check the forums more often lol) Many thanks for bringing the steel-cut oatmeal ingredients to my attention. I guess in my excitement over the convenience of the product I overlooked the rolled oats and syrup. Any thoughts/advice about cooking up legitimate steel-cut oats and freezing them? And I'm with you on the original hummus and Salsa autentica, soooo good!

Hey Ryan, how are you doing? No worries!

Steel cut oats, the easiest ways to cook them are the Crockpot or Thermos methods from Zone books. Crock pot: 1 part oats to 1 parts water, cook on low overnight. Thermos, same proportions but use boiling (or very hot) water, put into a thermos and cap it overnight. I use a 1 to 1.5 quart Crockpot oiled with a little light olive oil (you don't want to heat extra virgin oil, and the light has a neutral flavor), 1 cup oats and 4 cups water. The next morning I transfer the removable crock to the fridge. Later in the day, when it's become solid, I pop the whole thing out of the crock, cut it into a dozen pieces (about 1 block each) and freeze them.

Ever tried the "Blister Peanuts " at Trader Joe's? (look for the blue package) They're great!

ON MY LAST TRIP TO TRADER'S I BOUGHT EVERY SPICE GRINDER THEY OWN. WE LOVE THEM. I TOO LOVE THEIR FROZEN CHIICKEN BREASTS AND BAKE THEM WITH SOME BALSAMIC VINEGAR AND A DASH OF EVOO AND A GRIND OF THEIR "EVERYDAY SPICES".. BUT NOW I WOULD LIKE TO TRY THAT MARSALA IDEA. SOUNDED DELICIOUS. THE FROZEN VEGGIES ARE THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD AND THEIR ASPARAGUS ARE SUPERB.

SUE THANKS FOR THE NEW LIST. I POSTED HERE YESTERDAY BUT IT GOT LOST IN CYBER SPACE.. I EVEN BOUGHT A NEW INK JET SO I CAN KEEP PRINTING YOUR "COOKBOOK" OUT!! ONE DAY I WILL BIND IT AND CALL IT "LET SUE HELP YOU COOK YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH"!!!

Aw Mel...you're giving me too much credit here. :-)

Glad you like my recipes. You'll see how easy it is to come up with ideas for the new Zone foods when your shipment arrives. Have fun with it!

The ZoneFast recipes they've posted on this site can be taken in so many different directions. For dinner tonight I had the gazpacho recipe with my own twist... I left out the shrimp and added garlic powder, lots of fresh thyme and oregano, a little more vinegar, more cucumber fresh ground pepper and some sea salt. Very yummy. I added 1/2 package of plain Zone croutons and had a slice of toasted Zone cinnamon swirl loaf on the side. Dessert was 1/2 a Zone brownie. I'm loving eating this way. It's great to be able to eat like this and be lowering your inflammation even more than you can with a traditional Zone meal (there's virtually no omega 6 in these foods!). It's good to be true, but it's true! :-)

Well, as long as you are able to tolerate the higher GI of the foods, that is great for you, Sue! I am finding that the GI is probably too high, and that traditional zone meals are much healthier. With traditional zone foods, one can still get a handle on the good fat/bad fat thing (we humans have been surviving for a good many years that way).

ZoneFast products and recipes will probably work out great for those who have a hard time giving up bread and pasta, because it is the high GI of the traditional breads/pasta that keeps people out of the Zone. But, the lower GI is a huge improvement for those who would otherwise not consider the Zone at all.

As for me, after 5-6 years in the Zone, I think I have conquered that problem.

    Hi Zoners,

The new Zone foods are an excellent choice for lowering inflammation because they are virtually free of omega 6 fats. This is one of the reasons I switched to the ZoneFast 1-2-3 plan. I have a strong family history of Alzheimer’ Disease, my dad, his mom and all of his siblings, and I want to do all I can to keep my inflammation level as low as possible. Kudos to Barry Sears for making these excellent foods available to us! :-)

Don’t be fooled into thinking the new Zone baked foods and pastas are simply replacement foods for people who don’t want to give up eating bread and sweets. It’s not so. They are much more. They are the best choice for lowering inflammation.

This is an excerpt from Toxic Fat: "If you are following the Zone diet precisely, you are getting about 10 to fifteen servings of fruits and vegetables per day. That amount of vegetables and fruits means you are also getting a lot of anti-inflammatory polyphenols. By eating a broad spectrum of colorful vegetables and fruits, you are also getting a broad range of polyphenols to effecively inhibit silent inflammation." It also goes on about following the Zone Wellness Pyramid - it has not been updated to include the Superzone products, from what I can see. It is a little hard to get all of these servings with the products. And then one would have to add a bottle of polyphenols to replace the fruits and veggies that you would be lacking?

Also, why is this breaking information not being made more public? Usually if there is any type of major nutritional breakthroughs, you can find them outside of a website. The benefits of fresh foods are plastered everywhere for all to read, but I have not seen much outside of this website on Superzone foods. Are there any upcoming news events scheduled for these products?

    Mari, my sentiments exactly!

(by the way, sorry for hijacking the thread, but I think we have hit a "nerve")

    Sue,

There is no substitute for real food. Truly. I wish I could find the quote from Zone Labs that would state this point clearly. I will go looking for it and come back.

From a perspective of "anti-inflammation diets", one of the main points about eating to decrease inflammation is to eat whole foods, and avoid processed foods and artificial ingredients at all costs. The Zone Fast foods do not meet this standard. Wheat is not a good food for anti-inflammation. Sucralose is not a good food for anti-inflammation. I also see butter listed on the label, and I don't see any other fats listed, so I have a hard time believing that butter would be good for anti-inflammation.

I also find it curious that this "breakthrough" is not widely known. I would have expected to find some scientific citations on "molecular baking", but this term is not recognized anywhere except within the realms of the Zone and Medwell 123. That actually concerns me to a degree, because I wonder how much this processing as been tested, and who did the tests.

    Again, sorry for hijacking!

Dr. Sears continually stresses that if you correctly follow his dietary guidelines, then you would never need to purchase any products from this Web site. The products that are offered on this Web site are to be used a dietary aids to make your long-term compliance with the Zone Diet easier. The most rigorous version of the Zone Diet would be to never consume anything that wasn’t available 10,000 years ago. This would mean never consuming grains, milk products, vegetable oils, caffeine, and alcohol while maintaining the appropriate ratio of protein to carbohydrate at every meal and snack. Obviously, that is difficult for many people to comply with. This is why he developed food products (including nutrition bars, EPA/DHA concentrates and polyphenols along with the newest generation of SuperZone products) as an aid for people who don’t have the dietary discipline to maintain a strict Zone Diet. If these new SuperZone products enable you to maintain better hormonal control, then you should consider integrating them into your existing Zone Diet. The same is true for any other nutritional product sold on this Web site.

I apologize in advance for "triple-posting", but I wanted to keep the quoted post separate from my comments, so there is no mistake in what Zone Support said and what I commented on.

Those words come directly from the Zone, and from Barry Sears. Sounds to me that the post is saying that the foods are for those who have a difficult time adhering to zone guidelines.

    Hey Zoners!

Lots of speculation flying around here. For the newer readrers, it's well known here that for the past 10 years Barry Sears has been personally counseling me on how get the best possible results from the Zone. My postings in these forums reflect the advice he's given me. And, who would know better about all the intricacies of the Zone than Barry Sears? I'll be sticking with his advice. My results have shown me he knows what he's doing.

Though the naysayers among us will inevitably criticize and spin isolated quotes to fit their many scenarios, try not to allow this to deter you from reaping the benefits of all the Zone has to offer you.

    Enjoy your day everyone! :-)

    You are too funny, Sue!

I would recommend that you follow the link directly to the post. That quote was not an isolated quote. That was a direct copy/paste from an entire post. I have no intention on "spinning" anyone's quotes to fit a scenario.

I agree, though, about reaping the benefits that the Zone has to offer. I just don't happen to agree that we can reach our highest potential while eating manufactured foods.

    Hi Zoners!

If you're a Trader Joe's fan like me, you can keep up with the latest by subscribing to their emails. They're lots of fun to read. Today's is all about Valentine's Day. Here's part of it.

    "Do Something Blushingly Romantic

    • Pink Salt
    • Piquillo Peppers

    • Fresh Mozzarella

    • Rosy Outlook Bouquet

    Total Cost: $11

At First Blush: Prepare to sprinkle Pink Salt. Place Roasted Piquillo Peppers on a platter. Slice Fresh Mozzarella into medallions and arrange slices alongside Piquillos (pattern after Rosy Outlook Bouquet). Adorn with savory pink crystals, and put bouquet on display... is the color rising to the cheeks? Ah, how "blushingly romantic."

Sounds like a very Zoney Valentine platter to me. :-) And lucky me, I've got all those foods in my house already! And a certain someone usually gives me Valentine flowers (my husband). OK, so they probably won't match the food in appearance, like Trader Joe's bouquet would, but who cares? :-)

Mel, I know what you mean about starting something new in the middle of the week. I like starting things on a Sunday or Monday, or the 1st of the month, or whatever is a good date to work with. I think most of us are like that, it helps us to stay organized. While you wait for Sunday to come, you can be looking at the material and the menu planners to work out some meal ideas.

Good luck! It really didn't go well for me, it still varies. I have been eating traditional zone food now and just eating 1 zone product, but sometimes that product works ok, and sometimes it makes me feel even more hungry. Really varies.

Here’s another list of favorites that I haven’t posted here yet. I’ve compiled it from the receipts from a couple of my recent shopping trips to Trader Joe’s. These items listed are ones I usually keep stocked in my kitchen. Since I’m taking the names from a receipt, they might not quite be the exact names as shown on the products, but they will be close enough for you to figure out if you should look for them in a Trader Joe's store. Also, I highly recommend the Trader Joe’s $1.99 insulated shopping bag (the red and cream colored one with the Velcro closure strip across the entire top of the bag). It does a very good job of keeping things frozen, it’s roomy and it stands up to just about anything you subject it to. Other brands I’ve tried tear apart at the seams after a couple of months of use

Veggie Asian Blend, frozen veggies; the one in the dark blue package; I discard the flavoring packet (not the most Zone friendly ingredients in the flavor packet)

TJ’s Smoked Sockeye Salmon (wild salmon)

    White balsamic vinegar

    Chili pepper sauce

    TJ’s pitted Kalamata olives

    Peanut Satay Sauce (glass jar)

TJ’s bruschetta (glass jar); it makes a fantastic Zone pizza!

Sliced sun dried tomatoes (glass jar)

Dijon Mustard (one of the spiciest and sharpest tasting one I’ve found!)

    Traditional tapenade (glass jar)

    Hi Everyone!

Trader Joe's has their fresh apricots back in the store this week and they're delicious! They're grown in the US and are especially flavorful, with both a sweet and tangy taste. Apricots are one of the most Zone friendly fruits. They have a low GL and they're loaded with beta-carotene (Vit. A), vitamin C and iron.

Another one of my favorites is Trader Joe's Guacamole Hummus. It's low fat and all fat it contains is provided by the avocado in it. It's very Zone friendly and sooo good! Try using it for dipping with Zone Sesame Pretzels. This makes an excellent snack :-)

Sue, thanks so much for listing these foods here.  I cut and paste them until I had a very long list, then looked to see what I might want to try out that I hadn't noticed before.

My Trader Joe's has a new product, at least it's new in our store:

Healthy 8 Chopped Veggie Mix, which is a mixture of green cabbage, red cabbage, green bell pepper, broccoli, radish, celery, jicama, & carrots (very little of the last two).  It's so yummy in a stir fry!

3/4 cup has 6 grams carbs & 2 grams fiber

Hi, the veggie mix sounds very good.  I’ve been buying their fresh Organic Ranier Cherries for the past few weeks, the yellow ones.  Delicious!  I like the soaps at TJ's too.  They're much less harsh on the skin the others.  I use "...Next to Godliness" (lavender and chamomile liquid hand soap), "French Liquid Soap, Orange Blossom Honey" (hand and body soap) and a large bar of exfoliating soap contains almond oil and oatmeal.  I like the "...Next to Godliness" (tea tree lavender) dish liquid too, as well as "A Midsummer Night's Cream, Extra Dry Formula" (hand and body moisturizing cream, unscented, herbal blend with aloe).

    Hi Everyone,

Here's a spur of the moment 4 block meal I threw together for my husband last night, kind of a clean-out-the-fridge meal. This orange yogurt is something I've never made before and it was just heavenly.  So delicious!

Salad: Chopped Romaine lettuce topped with a block each of strips of low fat Muenster cheese and rosemary ham, olive tapenade, and drizzle of red wine vinegar, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a little sea salt and some fresh ground black pepper.

Dessert:  Mix together 1 cup low fat plain yogurt, 1 Valencia orange chopped into large bite sized chunks (juice and all), a little alcohol free vanilla, a tiny squirt of blue agave syrup (that's optional; he can handle a little extra carbohydrate) and a dash of nutmeg.

All the ingredients came for Trader Joe's, except for the vinegar, nutmeg and agave.

    Hi Everyone!

Another TJ's favorite at my house is "Trader Joe's Mild Salsa" (16 oz container of fresh salsa).  You can find it in the refrigerated section near the hummus.  It's a good all purpose salsa a lot of flavor or a mild salsa.  We like to use it as a dip for toasted Zone 1-2-3 flat bread.  For tonight's dinner, I tossed it with Zone fusilli, extra virgin olive oil, fresh ground black pepper and one twist of a grinder filled with Himalayan pink salt. Delicious!
