EicoRx or EicoPro?

I know the extra GLA in EicoPro is intended for athletes who train for 2+ hours per day (presumably these are endurance athletes, or athletes such as football players doing alot of conditioning work).. However, I'm a powerlifter who trains very intensely (using heavy weights) for about 1-2 hrs 3-4 days per week. Would a power athlete such as myself benefit from the extra GLA in EicoPro or would EicoRx be the best formulation for me? Thanks.

    Dave,

My first thought would be to stick with Eico RX, but it will be interesting to hear what Tech Support recommends. My thought is based on a couple things 1. You're lifting 3 or 4 days a week and 2. I've personally experienced the spillover effect a couple of times and you don't want to go there.

My second thought is that you might want to experiment by trying Eico Pro, if you feel your workouts warrant it. If you do, fill out the Eicosanoid Status Report (ESR, aka SIP report in some Zone books) before you begin supplementation and then redo it frequently, at least once a week for a while, to see if you are doing well or if your eicosanoid balance is going downhill. You can find it here: http://www.drsears.com/Resources/ta...fault.aspx

Sometimes the spillover effect will be obvious very quickly and at other times it can slowly
sneak up on you. I've experienced both, and interestingly, both times while Barry Sears himself was tweaking my fish oil type and dosages. Just goes to show that the bottom line is it can sometimes take a bit of experimentation to find the appropriate Zone fish oil and dosage. Everyone is different. It's also good to fill out the ESR from time to time even if you don't notice symptoms per se, just to compare to your previous one, because people's fish oil needs can change over time depending on a variety of factors.

    Good luck!

Interesting questioning because I've been using EicoRX, 2 caps per day, for the last several weeks because I felt that more was either unnecessary or potentially risky b/c of the spillover effect. What does the GLA actually do for the human body that the standard EPA & DHA aren't doing? Also, how does it compare and/or interact with CLA (something which I take 1 cap of before I cross-train).

    Hi Steven,

It's complicated, but basically GLA has the potential to make very powerful good eicosanoids.  The downside is that it can also produce bad eicosanoids (the spillover effect that we briefly discussed in this other thread this morning:  http://www.zonediet.com/Community/F...ult.aspx).

Re CLA, there are both positive and negative aspects to it, one of the negatives being it causes an increase in insulin resistance. To quote Barry Sears (The Anti-Inflammation Zone, page 90):  "My recommendations for CLA: The jury is still out on this supplement, so I would avoid it for the time being.”

Thank you Sue! I believe I will start with EicoRx to begin with at least. I just finished reading Toxic Fat and after using high-dose PGFO for a few months have recognized (I think) some of the signs of a poor AA/DGLA ratio, so am pretty sure some GLA will benefit me. For example, many "aches and pains" have been reduced after starting the fish oil (including 17 years of shoulder pain - that in itself has been a miracle) but I've been noticing that I seem to not recover "fully" from my workouts even though I've actually, by objective standards, made good progress - if that makes any sense. In other words, I'd "recover" from the workout but I feel that my body was not taking full advantage of the growth stimulus either. I believe a lower AA/DGLA ratio can help that along.

By the way, the ESR is one of the things that convinced me to start taking fish oil to begin with (after reading The OmegaRx Zone) so thanks also for reminding me to use that to keep track of things. An interesting aside is that I tried GLA once a few years ago and for the first few weeks or so thought it was making a positive difference, but then I kind of "crashed" it seemed like, and I've had no idea why until reading The OmegaRx Zone and following that up with the Toxic Fat book. The experience was bad enough that I have not touched anything with GLA in it since - one of the few supplements that seemed to give me those odd, dull feeling headaches. Reading about "spillover" was an ah-ha moment, and I am looking forward to trying GLA once again -- in a proper dosage this time.

I'm looking at Toxic Fat Appendix B right now considering the blood test for AA/EPA and AA/DGLA. Is there somewhere to order this online or would it be best to use the 800 number listed in that appendix?

    Thanks again.

Dave, I'm happy to hear my info helps!  Yes, that spillover effect is really something to experience, huh?  Your experiences with that and the ah-ha moment you had later when you read The Omega Rx Zone are very similar to what happened to me regarding health, diet and weight loss when I read my first Zone book (The Anti-Aging Zone). Prior to reading it I had put into practice an eating plan and lifestyle plan that I had devised after months of researching on my own.  I'd already lost a significant amount of body fat, increased my LBM, and greatly improved my lab tests when I read the first Zone book.   About 30 minutes into opening that book, I was floored when I began to realize I had been living the Zone lifestyle!  The book scientifically explained my excellent results with the diet and lifestyle I'd already put into practice and helped me tweak to take it to an even higher level.  From then on there was no turning back. I've been in the Zone for 15 years now, not even realizing it for those first few years.

Just a thought, diet could also be playing a part in your recovery issues.  Another thought, if you've very recently begun eating the Zone diet, the initial AA release can temporarily set you back a little.

I highly recommend NutraSource Diagnostics (listed in the book) for AA/EPA testing because I've had excellent experiences with them.  Simply give them a call.   The process is very easy.  If you choose that testing facility you'll receive a full report from them, including Omega 6, ALA, DGLA, GLA, etc.  I'm waiting until the Zone Labs mail-in spot test is available to do my next AA/EPA.

Dave, It sounds like you and Sue have everything under control. A lot of people find mixing OmegaRx and Eico Rx to be the perfect fix.
Keep tract of your situation with the ESR and tweek it from there.

    Hi Tech Support

How do I return an unopened bottle of EicoRx that I received last week; I realize now that EicoRx supplimentation causes very watery discharge that's painful in the AM if taken too often, now that i"m in the zone for 5 weeks and really sticking to eating very well.

Hi Steven, Call 800-404-8171 and ask for an RMA to return, we have a 30 Day return policy. If you have The Anti-Inflammation Zone book reread chapter 12. Check out the Eicosanoid Status Report at http://www.drsears.com/Resources/ta...fault.aspx
You eat the Zone Foods which have no AA and you work out so the GLA in EicoRx would be very powerful in DGLA conversion to anti-inflammatory cellular rejuvinating ecosanoids. Toxic Fat talks about it in more detail.

I took an ESR last night and was very happy to see that after reading the explanations below, I seemed to be on the right track for all the categories tracked and requested. My largest problem is my stool instability, which Sue tells me could be from excessive EPA. I thought it could be from too much EicoRx, however it could also be from absense of sufficient fiber in my diet from only Zone food products, so I started supplementing with that. I have the bottle at home, so I may work my way through it slowly. I'll read the chapter and consider some reintroduction next week. Which section of Toxic Fat? I haven't found that part yet maybe.

Also could it be that I'm possibly now actually over supplimenting with FO, as I continue to take 9 caps a day which is about 5.6g of FO total of Epa/DHA, whether their EicoRx or the Omega. Is it possibly time to cut back a bit as I've lost about 5% BF & 18lbs in 5 weeks so far?

Steven, I agree with Tech Support's suggestion to read more about it.  The more one understands about eicosanoids and the impact of the various fatty acids on eicosanoid production (both those in foods and those in Omega RX and Eico RX), the more insight one gains into how to adjust their fish oil dose.  Re your Toxic Fat question, the chapter titles can be very useful in finding subject matter in the book.  Rather than reading here and there piecemeal, looking only for passages and /or chapters on eicosanoids and fish oil, considering the level of understanding you're looking for, I'd suggest studying the book cover to cover when you have time.
