Right now I'm standing in Stop & Shop (a large grocery chain in New England) looking at a display of Crazy Apples, smack in the middle of the produce section. Very appropriate name. They're flavored apples packed in a colorful eye- catching plastic bag, one flavored Fuji apple to a bag. They have 3 flavors, Tropical Blast, Bubble Gum and Pomegranate Grape. Only one word comes to my mind...HUH? |

OK, and speaking of crazy foods . . . . . . . This year from the wonderful state of Texas and the infamous Texas State Fair, who brought you (from past fairs): deep-fried Twinkies, deep-fried Oreos, and would you believe? deep Fried Butter, Chicken-Fried Bacon, and last year's deep Fried S’mores. . Well they are at it again! . Attendees at the 125th fair which started its annual 24-day run on Saturday will determine whether this year’s crispy crop, among them: Fried Bubblegum, Fried Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack, Fried Autumn Pie, and Hans’ Kraut Ball - - - will become instant classics, as well as cash cows. Deep-frying makes for deep pockets. Last year the fair set a single-day food sales record of $3.6 million. These totally decadent, gleefully caloric, once-a-year foods give the fair its other title: the Fried Food Capital of Texas. Deep fried butter? Hey is it at least grass-fed sourced butter? Ha-ha !!! |

Perhaps not so crazy, but still odd to me, is fruit that has been frozen with added sugar. Isn't fruit sweet enough, without adding sugar to it? |
