I know it's gross, but it's a serious question! I'm on day 3 of The Zone, I am eating only lean meats and fresh veggies and fruits, no grains. Yesterday I took 2 anti-gas and 2 digestive health pills that help with intestinal gas issues and STILL had bad issues. I LOVE fresh veggies, but all the fiber is killing me...will it subside after my body cleanses a bit??? My family and my PT clients will force me off of this healthy living choice if I don't figure this out.

I get really bad pains in the stomach from chickpeas so only have a small amount. There are certain veggies that give you more gas than others - for example cabbage and brussel sprouts. Why not look on the net and eliminate the gassy ones and see if that works. My husband suffered with really bad stomach pains for years. Finally went to a naturopath who suggested a good quality pro-biotic and his stomach is fantastic now.

    Bo,

Your body will develop a tolerance to it, eventually. Sometimes, you have to start slow and work up to it, that may help. Margaret has some really great suggestions for dealing with it. I (to this day) have to watch the "bean" intake, or else it creeps up on me, too. Pick some veggies that are not as "potent", and work things in more slowly.

    Good luck!

I suggest you to eat cooked vegetables only for now and eliminate all fruits. They have fiber and sugar, it creates gas. Eat berries only. Beans before cooking put in water for 2-3 hrs and then wash them out and cook in new water. I like soups with vegetables. Dont steam veggie. Cook them in boiling water for the beginning specially cabbage family. Last suggestion eat yoghurt for breakfast, it helps for keeping good flora in your body.

Yoghurt!! Forgot to add that to my post. My husband is from Europe and loves it plain - no fruits - nothing (I cant - makes me shiver just thinking about it! ha ha).

Hmmm..sure wish I read this before I chose what to have for lunch....spinach, strawberry salad; tuna; hummus with cucumbers for dipping...thankfully I remembered to take a couple Beano within the first couple bite. Thanks for the suggestions. My sister is working with a nutritionalist and suggested I try a pro-biotic as well. I think I will! Can't do yogurt...lactose = bad!

Bo, the advice I've seen on this topic is for people who experience initial bloating and gas as they begin the Zone Diet to keep veggies to smaller amounts during the first weeks and gradually increase the volume over time. This will result in eating more unfavorable carbohydrates at first to achieve Zone balance, but as you increase veggie amounts over several weeks’ time while simultaneously reducing the unfavorable carbohydrates you will be allowing your body to adjust to the good carbohydrates without experiencing those unwanted side effects.
