Can you eat too many egg whites per week?

One of my favorite breakfasts is from the Toxic Fat book menu list. I use 4 egg whites, 3 pieces of turkey bacon, 1 1/2 c onions and then add another 2 non-starchy carbs depending on my mood. Is there a limit on the number of times I should eat this in a week? I know that traditionally it is suggested to limit your egge consumption but since I'm not eating the yolks is that still the case? Since I'm also looking for a replacement for my favorite snack (1 Mozzarella cheese stick, 1/2 c grapes and 1 Macadamia nut) since I seem to be uber sensitive to fruit I was also considering the egg whites filled with hummus for a snack but didn't know if I should balance that or consider it in light of what I like for breakfast. Thanks for the help!

There is no limit that I am aware of regarding egg whites. The yolk is the concern. Watch the turkey bacon, turkey meat could contain some levels of AA--especially if it is dark meat.

My favorite snack is: 1/4 cup cottage cheese, 1/2 cup blueberries (frozen), and a sprinkling of slivered or sliced almonds. I like using the blueberries frozen, then allowing them to thaw; the juices run out and flavor the cottage cheese.

You know it's interesting the way my mind works sometimes - I was so excited initially about having a recipe with turkey bacon because I LOVE bacon. Just recently it suddenly occurred to me that even though it was TURKEY bacon it still had NITRATES in it, duhhhhhh! So this last pack was my last one for that reason. I didn't even think about the white meat/dark meat connection which is an excellent point. Part of the learning curve, right?

I'm trying to figure out what to do with dairy, legumes, and grains because of the information that's been given about the relationship with auto-immune diseases. It certainly makes it tougher to find things I like to eat without the cheese. I think as part of my trial and error with my blood work I'm going to work on playing around with how gluten effects me. For the moment though I'm going to up my fish oil and incorporate some of those foods back in. I get my CRP and Glucose checked in 3 months so I'll see how that change effects things and go from there. So the cottage cheese sounds great!

    Hi Christie,

Egg white is one of the best protein foods for the Zone.  It's fine to eat egg whites a couple times a day if you like.  I would limit the turkey bacon, as already mentioned.  The hummus filled hard cooked egg white snack is a balanced one block snack in itself when you use the whites of 2 eggs and 1/4 cup hummus for the filling (the hummus usually contains enough fat for Zone balance).

Sue - I was just looking up recipes for hummus for just that reason! Great minds think alike? Although I'm not even remotely presuming to have as great a mind as you.

Thanks Christie.  The picture was taken on Nov. 3, the day baby Jamie arrived home from the hospital.  I miss my little grandsons, but I'll be back there in a few weeks for Christmas.  I can't wait!

Christie, I wasn't even thinking about those nitrates, so that is an excellent point, too! Yes, part of the learning curve.

Christie, I don't know how recent this was, but I remember seeing nitrite-free turkey bacon at Trader Joe's.  Though nitrites are a commonly used preservative in processsed meats, you can find them without nitrites.

Egg whites are a great protein source. Asubstitute for the turkey bacon could be Natural Canadian Bacon.
