Recently I discovered that our school only serves small apples instead of what I thought of as medium apples. In counting zone blocks does it matter on the size of the apple? The reason why I ask is because I remember reading somewhere in Dr.Sears' work of the serving for an apple to be 1/2 of a medium apple. So does a small apple equal half of a medium apple?(Ie. 1 small apple equals 1 block of Carbs).

There is actually a range of Carbs (ratio) of .6 to 1 to Protein. So, if you've been counting your apples as 2 blocks you are OK. A small apple might be more than 1 but less than 2. I would not worry about it so much. If you could weigh one of the aplles, cored, then you could get an idea for your-self if you wanted to.  But, I always count apples as 2 blocks.  An extremely large or an extremely small, I might weigh once, just to see.

Jake, that was the question that I was thinking to ask exactly today!!!

I weighted my (large) apple and the scale said 0.9 oz (257 g)

So I counted it as 3 blocks - since I know if the Carb block is a little less in comparison with the Protein block - it won't make me hungry as the oposite seems to be true for me.

Thanks for posting this question and thanks Sue for responding to it!

Christina, I think you mean to thank John.

My reply... it's ok to consider a small apple as you would a medium, unless its so tiny it's miniature.  Since the point of carbohydrate balance is to promote insulin control at low levels, most people will be better off keeping carbohydrate to a bit less than erring by eating too much.
