Hi Sue, I love that you do these food journals they are so helpful. On 10/02 you put how many blocks were in each meal. Are there the same amount of blocks in each meal for all of the following days? Also, do you know of a food journal/calculator that is zone friendly? Thanks for all your help! |

You're welcome, and thanks Alicia. The meals in this journal are typical size ZoneFast meals, containing 2-3 blocks each. My daily protein requirement is 13 blocks, which is the reason I eat closer to the typical men's suggested ZoneFast plan (men’s has additional snack compared to women’s plan). I don’t know of a Zone meal calculator. Here’s a helpful Zone journaling tool. http://www.zonediet.com/Tools/Quick...fault.aspxIf you’re doing the ZoneFast 1-2-3 program, it’s not necessary to apply blocks to it. Follow the info on the Grocery Additions page. It's basically all there is to the 1-2-3 Program. http://www.zonediet.com/GroceryAddi...fault.aspx

Hi to everyone reading my journal thread today. It's a beautiful fall Saturday. Hope you can get out to enjoy it!
I've been away from home on "grandma duty" for a couple of weeks, and I've found it very easy to stay in the Zone. I've had shipments of Zone foods sent to my daughter's house, where I'm staying. Tonight I'm cooking a turkey dinner for everyone here. I plan to enjoy it too and still stay in the Zone, by making a dish of Zone bread stuffing to go with it.
Here's my journal entry from yesterday. A little reminder, to prevent any confusion, I eat closer to the men's recommendations because I have a higher lean body mass than the average women.
Oct. 22, 2010

B: Cinnamon bun, toasted, with light cream cheese Walk
S: Original flavor granola topped with some Unsweetened Westsoy Chocolate Soy Milk and a few chunks of apple

S: Sesame pretzel, toasted, with roasted red pepper hummus
Strength training
Dinner: green salad and ½ package fusilli with tomato sauce
Vestibular exercises
S: 2 chocolate chip cookies

Hi Sue, It has been so helpful to view your daily menu journals! Thank you for posting. As you might recall from my previous post on a different topic, I have Insulin Resistance. According to my activity level, I require 13 blocks per day. Since you use 13 blocks as well, I thought I could ask you a couple questions. Question about your menu/Zone Foods: 1. I've noticed that sometimes you will add a green salad to your Zone Foods meals. Do you count the green salad as a carb? Do you add any dressing/olive oil to your salad? Do you think I can do this as well, being Insulin Resistant? 2. I've also noticed that you'll add condiments like Hummus to your snacks, like your Zone Pretzel. Do you count the hummus as a certain block, or simply keep it within a small amount and not count? 3. Lastly, (for now anyway), if I'm understanding correctly, the Zone Fast snacks are all 2 blocks (cookies, granola, brownies) whereas, the bread products (rolls, bagels, sandwich slices) are 3 blocks, and the pasta, orzo, pizza is 4 blocks total? Is that correct? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to wrap my mind around all this new information. Thank you! KJ

Hi KG, I'm happy to hear my journals are helpful. Thanks for letting me know! :) For readers here who may not be familiar with insulin resistance, one of the jobs of insulin is to clear sugar out of the blood stream. Insulin resistance is the term for what happens over time when the blood sugar is constantly being elevated, usually by too much carbohydrate in the diet. Basically your body eventually becomes resistant to insulin it produces. When this occurs, the body produces more and more insulin over time to clear out the same amounts of blood sugar until the point comes the body is so resistant to the insulin it produces that it can no longer effectively keep blood sugar levels within a normal range (this is diabetes). KG, a little bit about me, I weighed in the mid 200’s and had elevating insulin (insulin resistance) prior to starting the Zone 16 1/2 years ago. I’m happy to be able to say I lost over 100 pounds of stored fat during the first 2 years in the Zone and I’ve increased my lean body mass over the years (I went from a tight size 22 to a loose size 8). I’ve maintained the loss to this day and I no longer need the 2 high blood pressure meds I used to take. Zone foods had not yet been developed when I started. I lost the weight with the hand–eye method (protein the size of you palm, fill the rest of the plate with veggies and fruit, add a dash or monounsaturated fat). I’ve had the best results across the board with Zone Fast 1-2-3, and it’s the easiest and most convenient method for me. I used to hate vegetables. Now I love them! Answers: 1. No need to count the lettuce as anything. It literally takes more lettuce than you could eat at a sitting of lettuce to reach the equivalent of 1 block (10 to 20 cups of lettuce or greens, depending on the variety). Be sparing with the amount of oil added and it should be fine. In fact one of the ways to achieve better insulin control and absence of hunger in the Zone is to add small additional amounts of good fats (olive oil, almonds, avocado, etc.) to you meals and snacks. 2. I eat hummus in very small amounts, not more than a couple tablespoons at most. I go lightly with legumes, avoiding most of them, because I find I feel better and do much better in the Zone without them. I done “count” it as in counting blocks, because I do not use the block method. I do, however, give it consideration in overall scheme of condiments suggested daily in the zone fast recommedations. Yes, I think you can do very well with the Zone. Insulin resistance is not a contraindication for doing the Zone, in fact just the opposite. A person with insulin resistance can thrive in the Zone. If was first designed for people with heart disease and diabetes, and the initial studies of the Zone were done using groups of diabetics. You can read more about this in Zone books. 3. Almost but not quite. All the current Zone foods contain 2 balanced blocks of protein , carbohydrate and fat per package , except for the pizza crusts , orzo and fusilli which all contain 4 balanced blocks per package Please don’t hesitate to ask questions. I’m happy to help! :) ________________________________ sue Consultant of Zone Labs Certified Zone Affiliate

Hi Sue, Thank you for your response! It is so helpful. By the way....I have some good news to share - I'm on day 26 of the Zone and I went to my Endocrinologist yesterday for a check up - I've lost 5 lbs in the past 26 days! While for some this may not be much, for me it is huge! The tips, advice, and guidance you've offered have contributed so much and I'm looking forward to learning more, and losing more! Take care, kj |

Hi KJ, Excellent, congrats! You're doing very well. Keep it up! :) I'm happy to share. The Zone has done so much good for my family and I that I can't help but pass on the information about it to help others. The biggest tip I can pass on to everyone is to focus on lowering you inflammation and gaining insulin control. If you choose you meals and snacks based on these two principles, you'll have the best weight loss results, too. The better you control inflammation with diet, the less fish oil you'll require (I take 1 capsule every 3rd day). To focus on lowering inflammation, avoid consuming omega 6 fats as much as possible. You're already a step ahead on this one because you're basing your meals on Zone 1-2-3 foods and they do not contain AA. AA is an omega 6 fat that causes inflammation in the body. It's the absolute worst fat to consume. Egg yolks are rich in AA, which is why they're avoided in the Zone diet. Eggwhites contain no AA (they contain no fat at all). AA is found to varying degrees in most animal foods, even the most Zone friendly ones. The EPA in fish oil dilutes AA which reduces you levels of inflammation. The better your diet, the less inflammation you will have and the less EPA (fish oil) you'll need. The second part, the insulin control will come from adhering to the Zone diet meal balancing principles, especially from choosing mostly vegetables for you carbohydrates, and mostly berries when you eat fruit. Have a great holiday weekend!

Hi Everyone! Mon. 6.27.11 The baked goods and pasta are Zone foods. My LBM and activity level gives me a higher protein requirement than the average female, so my day contains slightly more food (about 13 blocks) Breakfast: baked French toast made with cinnamon swirl bread, 2 egg whites, a little soy milk, almond butter and blueberries...mmm. It was delicious! Walk: 1+ hour, trails in the woods Lunch: 1/2 package fusilli tossed with artichoke hearts, asparagus, balsamic vinegar, evoo, S&P. Snack: brownie, warmed in the microwave and topped with 1 tsp peanut butter Strength training, 45 min Snack: plain bagel chips, a little peanut butter and some fresh red raspberries Dinner: 1/2 multigrain pizza crust topped with chopped baby spinach, chopped fresh tomato, onion powder, garlic powder, a little S&P (no cheese in this one), bake 5 min in a 450 toaster oven on the pizza setting, then add some fresh basil chiffonade and drizzle with evoo. Had some chilled Trader Joe’s Blueberry and Pomegranate Green tea, too (bottled; it’s unsweetened). some light yoga (stretches) My evening snack will probably be 2 cookies or a cinnamon bun Besides the food, I had Sea Health Plus, nutritional supplements, lots of water, some flavored sparkling spring water and the tea mentioned above. Sue - I see you posting alot on the Forum with great advice and recipes and that you've had great success with weight loss on The Zone. I ordered the 2 week program foods - I am told they wont get here for another 5 days. GRRR But in the meantime I am trying to learn as much as I can (I ordered 2 books from Amazon as well). My primary focus is EASY and CONVENIENT right now. I have a lot of stress and little time in my schedule these days so the premade foods seems like a perfect way to get started so that I dont have to do alot of calculations and balancing as I am just getting started on the program. I calculated that I am 11 blocks. I am 5'-4", currently 130 and I want to lose about 13 pounds. I gained weight due to stress 3 years ago and I want it off but have been really struggling. I turn 40 in 2 weeks so I know it's just not getting easier! I dont eat red meat or pork so The Zone also seems to be a good match for me there. Typically I eat pretty healthy and walk several times a week with some light weight training. I am an insomniac as well - and do take medication to try to do the best I can to get the required amount of sleep for my health. I am planning to do the 2 week menu pretty much as written as it all sounds very easy and delicious to me. I am worried about whether or not it will lead to weight loss though since I dont know the total calories for a day's menu. I burn about 1850 - 2200 calories a day (I track it with a device). Any advice you can give realted to WEIGHT LOSS with The Zone? Thanks so much! J |

My advice for the best weight loss with the Zone diet is to follow the instructions in the sample menu and in the grocery additions info that you receive with the shipment (both are also found on this site), and supplement with Omega Rx and Sea Health Plus. Sea Health Plus and Omega RX work synergistically to further enhance results (inflammation lowering; it will help produce optimal weight loss results). There’s a lot of science behind the Zone and it simply cannot be boiled down to calories in/calories out. To ease you mind you will be getting 1100-1200 calories daily when following the women’s recommendations (that’s with either Zone Fast or Classic Zone). In the Zone your body burns fat to provide its energy. Any caloric recommendations you’ve been checking out are most likely based of burning carbohydrate to provide energy and will be of no use in regard to a person eating a Zone diet. The body produces more energy from one calorie of fat than from one calorie of carbohydrate so you will require fewer calories when eating the Zone diet as compared to eating a diet where you burn carbohydrate for energy. Note that my daily plan day includes an extra snack because I have a higher LBM and activity level than the average woman. I’ll be happy to help if you have questions. You can see photos and descriptions of my meals in the Food photo album on my fb page (Sue Knorr). Mon. 8.22.11 The baked goods, bars and pasta are Zone foods. My LBM and activity level gives me a higher protein requirement than the average female, so my day contains slightly more food (about 13 blocks). Went on a day trip to New Hampshire today with my daughter and baby grandsons, and we met a friend for lunch. Breakfast: Toasted multigrain Zone bagel with light cream cheese and smoked wild sockeye salmon and some plum slices Snack: 1 mint chocolate chip nougat Zone bar Lunch: At a restaurant, marinated Mediterranean Salad with bronzed shrimp added...delicious and it contained a substantial amount of veggies like cucumber, peppers, red onion, tomatoes, etc. Snack: cinnamon bun Dinner: Large garden salad (mixed greens, green beans, peppers, etc.) with bagel chips, a few peach slices and raspberries Snack: brownie topped with a little peanut butter
