Seriously, haven't seen much lately. I did see something on the news that he was going out for an appearance or something and the truck got stuck under a bridge. Opps!!!

Yes, I've been curious to know how he's been doing lately, too.

I just did an internet search, as well as searches of this site and of DrSears.com. The most recent article I found was about what Matt mentioned, released by CNN on March 11, 2008. Manuel was being taken out for a picnic with his girlfriend, but the plans had to be cancelled when his bed/vehicle set-up snagged an overpass. He's now hoping to take her on a picnic on his birthday in June.

On the up side, the article said he's lost 440 pounds now! That's fantastic! The article doesn't mention the Zone Diet, but rather, it refers to "a high-protein diet he started two years ago".

huh... Just found a FOXNews.com online article from 2-13-08 that states he's lost 570 pounds,

From the documentary on UK channel 5, he ate in the wrong food/combination and voila...the foods did silent damage.
Everybody is different.
His mates probably ate the wrong foods too.

im not trying to be mean or anything, its just its his fault hes in that bad of shape, genes have nothing to do w it. People try to feel sorry for him or something and that doesnt make much sense

I have not seen the shows. I have only read about him on the web.

It is a sad situation. The fact that he or someone around him couldn't stop this before he got that big. It amazes me when I hear stories about people who haven't been out of the house or bed for that matter in years. Someone is supplying the food for them, they aren't going out and getting it themselves.

My wife & I made a pact to not allow ourselves to get out of shape again. The 80 lbs that I took off in 1 year took 10-12 years to put on. It was so gradual it didn't seem like a big deal.

yeah, i cant believe when i hear stories like that. People who cant get out of their own door and stuff. I know im never going back to my old ways when i was in middle and most of high school. Looking back, and from what i know now, i ate SOOOO bad. I think part of the reason i didnt get so out of shape eating that food is because i didnt know how bad it was for me. Its kinda like those placebo affects. If someone knows that they just ate 100 bad carbs and feels bad for doing it, will actually gain more wieght than a person whos oblivious to eat. Thank god America doesnt know just how bad the food they eat is huh lol

Yeah, it is sad, both about Manuel, and about how many Americans eat But Manuel's turning it around. I give him a lot of credit. And he's doing it in the public eye, too. He's very fortunate indeed to have the gerenrous help of the Mexican Zone drs and Barry Sears. I don't remember the exact details of hie past from the TV show I saw, but as I recall he'd begun to put the weight on when he lived and worked in the US.

As for some people eat, tons of carbs and fats, yeah, if they only knew! Everyone reading this will hopefully keep spreading the word about the Zone!

I didn't want to post because I thought this was a discussion about this mans weight loss accomplishments thus far. But not all Americans are over weight due to McDonalds, I think we could start by examining the food pyramid if we really wanted to pinpoint something useful. At least I know when I was younger we had a large emphasis on the food pyramid throughout my education.

Just something to think about.

yeah, i didnt mean mcdonalds alone, it was just supposed to be a metaphor thing. I think a very large part of it is the public ignorance on whats good for you and whats not. If they would know how bad some of the new food really is, i think thed be more reluctant to grab that extra donut or bowl of pasta. I know when i was a kid and my parents would always take me to fast food places and wouldnt think twice about the nutritional value of anything (not that many kids do), it wouldnt even pop into my head. However i think if maybe the schools were to iunclude a mandatory nutirtion and health class, it would help the obesity problem trmendously

Yeah I was referring to McDonalds in that sense too ;-) and the bit on the pyramid is the whole educating the masses thing you spoke about.

I've just recently heard about Manuel Uribe. I too find it interesting that he could get that big and just keep on gaining. That is, until he started the zone. In some ways I am very grateful for him doing this in the public eye and he should get a lot of credit for actually doing something about his weight.

I know what it is like to gain and to feel so out of control. I lost 40 pounds doing The zone a few years ago but gained it all back and some. Food in the wrong combination and type can be just as addicting as cigarettes or alcohol. I am now back doing the zone and intend to stick with it for a lifetime. Manuel and his story has helped me to be resolved to do this...

yeah, food addiction is actually worse than drugs or alchohol bc you show it physically alot more. For the most part people can tell if you might have an obsession w food, however , its hard to tell alot of the time with drug or alchohol addicts. Tehy get the luxury of not having to show their addictions through pounds of fat. stectch marks

COOL!!! Just found out that Manuel is not only ALIVE but will be married on Oct 26th in Monterey, Mexico! The man who had died was Jose Luis Garza and weighed 990 pounds. His death was due to a heart attach. He was buried Oct. 7th. However, our Manuel is on the way to being married. happiness and health be unto him.

According to the paper he did get married. I copied what my paper said, and I wonder why he didnt mention that his weight loss was also do to the Zone diet. He said it was due to his new wife whom he met 4 years ago!!

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- The world's heaviest man has tied the knot.

Manuel Uribe, who hasn't left his bed in six years, married his longtime girlfriend Claudia Solis Sunday in northern Mexico.

Wearing a white silk shirt with a sheet wrapped around his legs, Uribe smiled as Solis, 38, walked down a flight of stairs wearing a strapless ivory dress, a tiara and hot-pink lipstick.

He later broke into tears as a notary declared the couple husband and wife in a civil ceremony attended by more than 400 guests. For the traditional first dance as newlyweds, Uribe and Solis held hands and swayed to a romantic ballad.

A popular local norteno band played accordion-heavy tunes at the reception, which featured a banquet of meat and buttered vegetables.

Uribe's mother, Orquedia Garza, said the groom steered clear of the five-tier wedding cake.

"He didn't break his diet," she told The Associated Press. "His doctors are here and they are watching him very closely."

The wedding, which was closed to most media, will be featured in an upcoming Discovery Channel documentary on Uribe, the 43-year-old former mechanic said.

"I have a wife and will form a new family and live a happy life," Uribe told hordes of reporters earlier as they followed him through the streets of Monterrey.

A flatbed truck was brought in to tow his custom-made bed decorated with a canopy, flowers and gold-trimmed bows to the wedding at a local event hall. Two police patrol cars escorted him ahead of a long line of traffic.

Uribe tipped the scales in 2006 at 1,230 pounds (560 kilograms), earning him the Guinness World Record as the world's heaviest man.

He has since shed about 550 pounds (250 kilograms) with the help of Solis, whom he met four years ago.

Uribe said he's gunning for a new title: world's greatest weight loser.

We see what the reporter chose to include in the story, but we don't know what Manuel told the reporter. As I understand from the Discovery TV shows, his new wife has helped him throughout his weight loss experience with the Zone diet.

I have just heard recently about Manuel Uribe.... Some how I agree, people do enable, due to no educational knowledge on foods & being unable to buy what is right... I live on limited Income, FS is $74 a month, yet I still can not get people to agree to healthy foods, my family here whom I have to live with at this time, eat what ever they have and cook high starch... But the plus side since I moved from WA to TX, I have walked more, so lost after 9yrs of trying 34lb... So I am still determine to lose an added 70lb...will bring me to 146lb, hope in next year I shall be 170 then 150 then 131, which means I am down to normal.... So I will continue to have faith, even though can't afford any thing on Zone, I shall follow some of the rules... anyone whom can advise store food that works please do so...

not that these are cheap, Catherine.....but eggs are good, (we use the whites mostly), possibly tuna packed in water, tofu, protein powder, you have to shop around for a less expensive one....and then frozen veggies can be less expensive and just as good....frozen berries....and the steel cut oats. (they take 30-40 min to cook, but they're gooood)

I have read lots of error here...concerning his large weightgain. Barry Sears made it clear he was fat from one thing and that is a hormone known as "Insulin" we must learn to be accurate about why people are over their healthy weight. Barry makes it so simple one must eat in the zone that keeps your insulin in the proper zone.

I take my blood sugar every morning when I wake up and eat before 20 minutes elaspes and eat in the zone as Barry's dinner plate charts on this site show. Eat that way consistantly and you will become the healthy person you want to be ...no gimmicks just the simple truth Barry did all the work and research for us was it just too easy for us ? Is that why some don't get it and still talk about the obese in judgemental terms??

Hopefully we will get to this truth one day.

Manuel Uribe, 42, the world's heaviest man, will soon be able to leave his home regularly, thanks to a custom-made Chevy Astrovan

MONTERREY, Mexico - The world's heaviest man still can't walk, but he will soon be able to roll. Manuel Uribe said Thursday he is having a 1989 Chevrolet Astrovan outfitted to support his record-breaking weight, giving him mobility after more than six years of being confined to his bed.

Uribe earned the Guinness World Record as the world's heaviest man in 2006, when he tipped the scales at 1,230 pounds. He claims to have since shed more than 500 pounds after making a public call for help.
Uribe, known as Meme to his friends, even has a name for his new ride.
"My friends call it the Meme-Mobile, just like the Batmobile," he said.

The minivan is being converted into an open-air, flatbed pickup of sorts. Manuel says he will put a bed on the back of the van to drive around town, with his new wife at the wheel. When at home, he will hang out in a remodeled garage that will include a forklift to help raise his regular bed up to the level of his car bed, allowing him to switch locations from time to time.

Uribe said that, with the new car, he plans to start up an auto parts business. And Uribe's wife, Claudia Solis, said the two are even thinking about making a trip to the beach in May.

Uribe married Solis in October, and the wedding was one of the few times he has left his home in recent years.

I first read about Manuel in late 2008. There is nothing on this site or elsewhere on the Web that I can find that has documented his weight loss progress since then. One source said he lost 26 pounds in 2008.

What happened? Why did his weight loss come to basically a screeching halt in 2008? Did he stop eating a Zone Diet? You'd think he would have lost at least another 100+ pounds in 2008.
Is there any news of him loosing wt in 2009?
Has Dr. Sears not been involved with Manuel since Manuel's wedding in 2008?

Please, Dr. Sears, update us on Manuel's progress into 2010.

There was a report last summer that he had died, but apparently there are some web links that state that this report is false. Regardless, there is nothing new to report at all. Apparently, he had been working on a new website and the "Manuel Uribe Foundation", but I have not seen any of this, either.
