I'm wondering about two things I enjoy using in my pursuit of healthy eating. Ezekiel Bread spread with a tsp. of coconut oil. Can anyone tell me what they know about coconut oil. From what I've been reading. It looks good. (certainly tastes good!) |

Welcome Gayline!
Ezekiel bread is unfavorabe carb for the Zone, so eat it sparingly, if at all. The less grain you eat, the better your Zone results will be.
Dr. Sears has advised against eating coconut oil. There are much better fats to use in the Zone. You can read more about his statements about coconut oil with a search of DrSears.com (use the words coconut oil).

Where does Dr. Sears list Ezekiel Bread re: favorability? I have never seen it listed in any food block guide. Sprouted wheat products are known for their low glycemic indexes, and are supposed to be a good choice for diabetics. I have also read that there is negligible post-prandial rise of blood glucose after consuming Ezekiel Bread. |

Re: <div class='NTForums_Quote'>Posted By Cranberrycat on 09/02/2009 4:13 PM Where does Dr. Sears list Ezekiel Bread re: favorability? </div> He answered it in a "Ask Dr Sears" Q&A with the title "Ezekiel Bread", about 9 or 10 years ago. Unfortunately those older Q&A's haven't been available since the site was upgraded. |

Perhaps the reason why those Q&A's are no longer available is because the information is no longer applicable? 9-10 years ago is a long time, and seems that if there is no way to access this information easily, that it is kind of up in the air and up for interpretation. |

No. Bread is still unfavorable carb and is to be eaten in moderation in the Zone. Barry Sears explains how to wean off bread during your first week in the Zone in his most recent book, TOXC FAT, which was released less than a year ago. In the book, he states that he designed his 28 day menu for that book, in a manner to allow you to wean off bread during your first week of the Zone Diet. |

I did a quick internet search, and I foound several different independent sources that all stated that the glycemic index is in the low category. FOOD FOR LIFE says that the bread has a rating of 36, and another source gave the bread a rating of 35, the same as black beans (which are favorable in the zone). And, one of the sources that I read also promoted the Zone Diet. While you can't believe everything that you read on the internet, it is hard to dispute clear facts when there are so many sources out there saying the same thing. Unfortunately, the biggest mistake that is made here on this website is that they removed the information from the site, the only information that could possibly argue the point. But, since none of us knows what that information actually said, I think that it probably no longer applies. Remember, 9-10 years ago, wheat breads were tested in a highly processed form. Sprouted wheat is on the extreme opposite end of the pole, as far as processing goes, and is minimally processed. Ezekiel bread is also a combination of other grains and legumes (a favorable carb), including barley, which is another favorable carbohydrate. In the past few years, there has been much more testing done on GI/GL of foods, and I am sure that Barry would need to utilize current data in order to take a position on Ezekiel bread. |
