I remember reading somewhere in the Zone literature, I cannot remember where, that bananas as a "fruit" was not so good a choice. Can anyone explain why? or is this an error on my part and that bananas are actually OK in the measured amount?

Bananas have a higher glycemic load, and are not a favorable carbohydrate in the zone. However, no food is taboo and can be eaten on moderation. Lots of good nutrition in bananas! |

Kevin, Bottom line will be how you feel 4 hours after a meal that includes banana. |

It seems my reply, sent last night before Cran's -nearly identical, was removed? 1/3 typical banana is 1 unFav Carb block. |

Any carbohydrate food, whether favorable or unfavorable, is subject to the 4-hour test. We are not all programmed the same. Some people may be able to tolerate moderated banana intake (1/3 banana combined with other favorable carbs, or other unfavorables to not exceed more than 25% of the total carbs in the meal). And, then there are some people that are more sensitive to other fruits, despite those fruits being considered favorable. It depends on the glycemic load, and each individuals response to it. Personally, I think I am a bit more tolerant of foods with a higher glycemic load, if combined with other favorable and higher fiber foods. And yet, I would consider myself to be more sensitive to carbs, as I can't eat fruits as a stand-alone carb in a meal. That might not be the case for other people, though. |

I think I am more tolerant of unfavorable fruits and I am definitely less tolerable of grains, esp wheat. BTW, though gone, the Zone Foods GRANOLA really never held me at all! YET, the Zone cereal does a wonderful job. Not so much magic in those foods ... grin ... sorry had to have one last pun about them ... . I was deliverying on-line training to folks all over the globe, this past week, and had to start at 8:00 AM. So I often grabbed a 1/2 cup serving of Zone cereal, a little milk, and some Blueberries. And ate a little greek yogurt to balance the Protein. So, most of the week, had Zone cereal for breakfast. . Because of the timing, and different time zones of the various students, I often did not get off my computer and back into the kitchen until 12:30 or so. A full 5 hours later, and when I was just starting to get hungry. . Yet when I travel and eat (sorry ate) the granola, it would not last as long. The granola still tasted a bit too sweet for me, so I wonder if that was part of it for me? . This si good to know for my upcoming trip to Singapore and 25 hours of travel each way. As I have two boxes of cereal and 25 pkgs of granola for my week in Singapore. . (I ordered them on Thursday before they were discontinued, and they (generously or a mistake) sent me an extra box of Zone cereal, which was a real blessing this past week! |

Thank your for your responses. The high glycemic load is the reason I was looking for. Moderation in everything is the key and that 4 hour window... |
