Not to plays devil's advocate, but if the use of the unfavorble foods, listed in the quick starting guide, do not contribute to a "in-the-Zone" meal, than why are they listed?  By this, I mean, if 1/4 of a small bagel is on the list, albeit in the unfavorable catagory, wouldn't it contribute to a zone meal and be ok? Also, I see people use the words Balanced and In-the-Zone differently when discussing a meal, are they not the same?

    Hi Manuel,

Bagels are listed under the category of high density carbohydrates to be used in moderation, to let you know they are not the best carbohydrates for the Zone diet.

Re "Balanced" and in "In-the-Zone" the meanings can differ depending on the context.  A meal can be referred to as balanced and "in the Zone" because of the amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat it contains.  A person can be described as being "in the Zone" based on their individual hormonal response to the meals and snacks they eat.  To take it further, a meal can be "in the Zone" referring to it adhering to Zone balance, but it may not be the appropriate balance to keep a particular person in the Zone because that person may need a different protein to carbohydrate ration to stay in the Zone.

    Thank You Sue,

as I understand it, it is tolerable to eat the unfavorable foods, in strict moderation, but we really should monitor how we react to them. is this where focus and hunger come into play?

    Hi,

Yes, in strict modertation, monitoring focus and hunger, and following the rule that unfavorable carbohydrate should account for no more than 25% of all the carbohydrate in any one meal.

There are times when you'll need to eat them.  I went to the beach with friends this weekend.  I brought some things to keep myself in the zone, but, at one point, it was time for a meal and I had to use a half a bagel for my carbs because that's what was around and everyone decided we were staying in for lunch rather than going out.  I don't even really like bagels, but  I needed to balance.    Well, it was either that or booze.

Now that I'm home, I'll be back to the favorables.

I agree, we should focus on favorables, but there are times in which unfavorables may be the only choice.  I am with Rachel, would probably choose the bagel over the booze!
