Sometimes the day just doesn't go as planned.  Normally I eat breakfast at 7, lunch at noon, snack at 3, dinner at 6, and snack before bed.

But, some days get messed up.  Today, I woke up at 4 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep, so I had a snack at 5 and breakfast at 7.  I plan to work out at 10, so I'm supposed to have a snack 30 minutes before that.  So, that's two snacks in the morning.

Now, what do I do with the rest of my day when I only have two meals left/6 blocks left?

How do you deal with scheduling issues such as these?

Hi Pomegranate -- you can break your blocks up in to smaller meals -- that's absolutely ok. So 2 2-block meals and 2 1-block snacks spaced through the rest of the day is perfectly fine.

Also, if you're still hungry, it would be better to have an extra block today rather than risk going out of the Zone by overeating due to hunger.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi  Pomegranate,

Just as Laurie mentioned, I basically eat smaller meals and snacks throughout the entire day, to fulfill my 13 block requirement.  Here's my food and exercise journal where you see how I spread it out:

Thanks, I ended up having an extra snack because in the mid morning I did feel like I was leaving the zone and that eating a snack would help that. I think on another day, when schedulings is an issue, I might be able to reduce a meal by a block in order to balance it out.

The extra snack and then reducing a meal by  1P, 1C and 1F block is also good.  Some people also eat more frequent 2 block meals throughout the entire day.

Yesterday, I was supposed to eat another block of carb at the end of lunch.  The rest had been non-starchy vegetables and I was planning to have strawberries to complete it, but it never happened.  Should I have someone added it in later?

I think I felt better in the afternoon than I have been many other afternoons.  I got hungry a little early, but it was a more focused hunger instead of foggy, but I was still hungry.

No, you don't need to make up for it by adding a carbohydrate block later.  More important is to make sure you eat your full protein requirement each day.  In fact, since you noticed you felt more focused than usual, it shows you do better with a lower glycemic load meal.   Try only 2 blocks of carbohydrate in your 3 P meals and 1.5 blocks of C in a 2 P block meal.  Also try adding a couple extra monounsaturated fat blocks to meals.  It could help eliminate the hunger.

Thanks, Sue, I am going to try that. I have been reading the forum and see that you are carb sensitive and eat as you have described above. I'm wondering when you discovered that for yourself, if it was during the weight loss phase or maintenance.

Hi Pomegranate.  It was right away that I realized I had to really be careful with carbohydrate amounts.  Also, I used the hand/eye method (aka plate method) during my first 5 years in the Zone.  Then switched to the block method for a number of years, and I now use the ZoneFast 1-2-3 plan.

There may be something to this reducing carbs by one block and adding one fat per meal for me. (Just lunch and dinner, keeping breakfast the same, for now).

I hadn't been losing weight, then gained for a few days in a row. I finally lost some weight, so I'll keep trying this and see how I feel)

That's very good news Pomegranate. Sounds like you just has a bit too much glycemic load in your meals to allow you to lower insulin levels enough to stay in the Zone.  Less carbohydrate lowers the glycemic load, and the extra monounsaturated fat further helps by slowing the entry of the carbohydrate into your blood stream.  Please keep us updated.  Have a nice weekend!
