Limit to loss of body fat.
In Enter the Zone Chapter 2 in the section on Fat Phobia Dr Sears writes:
(It's genentically impossible to lose more than 1 to 11/2 pounds of body fat per week - you just can't lose fat any faster. ....
I do remember reading a study of this kind but can't find the reference.
Can anyone refer me to the reasons and the references behind this limit of loss of body fat. |

Have you checked the books and articles listed in the bibliography for Chapter 2 of ETZ? Perhaps the answer is there.

Sue,
Thank you for responding.
I have checked the references (articles) but had no luck.
I've read a couple of the books but was hoping I wouldn't have to read them all to find the reference.
Thank you anyway.

It is [b:e3c18806f5]absolutely[/b:e3c18806f5] possible to lose more than 1 1/2 pounds of body fat per week. While I believe fully that Dr. Sears is correct in saying "a calorie is not a calorie", there's no getting around the LAW (not theory) of conservation of energy. The body has to take energy from somewhere, and if it doesn't come in through the mouth then it has to come from the body's surplus.
Just look at morbidly obese people who undergo gastic bypass surgery - most of them lose over a hundred pounds within a year!
I think that perhaps what Dr. Sears is implying is that it's impossible to lose more than 1 1/2 pound of fat per week through the effects of insulin reduction. |

Yes, I think you could be right.
Do keep in mind that morbidly obese people lose quite a lot of fluid and excess muscle mass as well as body fat.
In the grand scheme of things I think it's more important that you consider health the long term solution to every problem and adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Kindest regards,

Ellington Darden has proven many times that it is possible to lose[b:da7a7a5d58] much [/b:da7a7a5d58]more than 1 1/2 lbs. of fat per week. In his fat loss studies, he has achieved up to 10 lbs/week (pure fat) in extreme cases. |
