Can somebody tell me what all the craze is about Mona Vie and what is supposed to be in it? It seems that it is marketed as a cure all for almost any health problem from being a powerful anti-oxidant, and also it seems to comtain some omega 3 fats.

Hi Paul!

Here's what Barry Sears had to say when asked about Mona Vie in the "Ask Dr. Sears" feature on his other website. (http://www.drsears.com/tabid/399/itemid/10807/Specialized-juice.aspx)

"Specialized juice
Q: Do you know about the Mona Vie juice? How does it fit into the Zone? They say they use phytochemicals to grab free radicals. Isn't that what the Omega-3 does? It sounds very good for you and it’s only 2-4 oz 2 times a day.

A: Polyphenols is the correct name for the phytochemicals that give fruits and vegetables their color. At high enough concentrations, these polyphenols have anti-inflammatory effects. There is no magic one polyphenol, so you want to get a full spectrum of them and in particular those that have proven anti-inflammatory properties. SeaHealth Plus is the only known polyphenol mixture that has been shown to have significant anti-inflammatory effects."

Thanks Sue. From reading some of your replies to others, you may be able to help me with my next question.

I know you have used the Zone Lifestyle and Fish oil to control HBP.

Well, I have a friend who is a very beautiful fit woman who has taken care of herself all of her life. She is 46 yo, exercises religiously and eats "healthy", but not quite Zoning. She tends to read something then goes out and gets a new supplement or product like Mona Vie because she liked what the info promised and wants it to keep her young.

She also tends to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, and puts a lot of stress on herself. The last visit to her doctor uncovered a BP of 160/100. She can not believe it, and she does not know what to do.

I immediately ordered her some OmegaRx, and she has been taking 2 teaspoons per day in the morning.

My goal is obviously to help her get her HBP to her normal range. Besides Zoning and Fish oil to you have any other advice? Is 2 tsp per day a good start? I am using the eicosonoid stat report to monitor for now.

This is a perfect example of a thin and fit person with increased levels of silent inflammation (vs. a heavier person who follows the Zone may have a smaller level of inflammation).

Solely based on what you said, I think that she would also benefit from stress reduction. Many folks find that meditation is a great way to reduce stress. Stress leads to increased levels of cortisol, which increases insulin levels, increases silent inflammation (and is showing up now as hypertension).

The Zone Diet and fish oil will go a long way, and I think she can achieve even more success with some sort of stress reduction activity on a daily basis.

Hi Paul,

You're welcome!

She will acheive best results in lowering her high blood pressure by practicing strict adherence to all levels of the Zone pyramid. Something like Yoga, Tai Chi, or Qui Gong would be an excellent addition to her lifestyle (to anyone's lifestyle), especially considering your description of her stress levels.

I can't offer a suggestion regarding dose because I don't know your friend's specifics. Follow the recommendations for establishing fish oil dosage from the table found in "The Anti-Inflammation Zone". Once she's at the correct dose and is strictly adhering to the Zone diet, she should have good results with lowering her high blood pressure. Fish oil is a vasodilator. This is well documented in published medical literature. Also, it takes one month at a specific dose of fish oil to fully acheive all the benefits you will have at that dose.

I wish her all the best!

Please keep us updated on her progress!

Hello, Paul! I am back again...

Sue mentioned "strict adherence".

I would hate to advise ANYONE to "strictly adhere" to anything. That usually causes more resistance than adherence.

While it is true what Sue said, that she will have best results by "strictly adhering" to the Zone, I also think that every little bit she does will make a difference.

NOw, what I mean by all of this, is that she sounds like she has some good things going for her, in her desire to follow a healthy diet, taking fish oil, and that she is exercising. Those are 3 biggies. The rest will come with time.

I would suggest giving her a book on the Zone, or directing her to the website. If she is already eating relatively
"healthy", then there will probably be very little for her to change. Most of these "healthy" eaters just need to adjust their carb choices and eat less starch, while eating protein at every meal/snack and including mono-unsaturated fat with each meal/snack.

Also, many "healthy" eaters are really into the low calorie craze. You may point out to her that the Zone Diet is actually a very low-calorie plan. Sometimes, this key point may "sell" the diet to people who would not otherwise consider it.

I feel that 2 tsp of fish oil per day is a good start, especially in someone who is already showing symptoms of silent inflammation. If you don't have a book to help her adjust the fish oil, then you can find more information on www.drsears.com.

And, to close, any type of stress reduction activity is fine. Even if it means just going to bed earlier in the evening and getting more sleep!

Hi Everyone,

For clarification sake, "stict adherence" (to the Zone) is a phrase I borrowed from Barry Sears. He's used it to describe the level of compliance needed by a person trying to improve an existing medical condition.

Oh, Sue! Is that post directed at everyone? or is it directed at me? LOL!

Whether or not Barry Sears said it, I have to stick with what I said, in that most people tend to resist compliance when they are told to "strictly adhere". I see this happen on a daily basis at the hospital where I work, there are patients admitted on a daily basis who are noncompliant to their "strict" regime. I have rarely seen success with such regimes. However, if patients are offered change in smaller baby steps, they are more likely to adapt to the change, and feel more empowered to take on the next step, when it comes along.

Perhaps, by taking baby steps, they will reach "strict adherence", but then it won't seem so strict!
