well......

Had my annual physical today and my cholesterol has gone from a total of 241 down to 182 after just 10 weeks of being in the Zone!

WOW!!!

I was really hoping to see it under 200, but I was floored to see it down to 182. I actually had the lab work done 3 weeks ago just before going on vacation for 2 weeks. I didn't want to have vacation affect the results. I didn't do anything else differently. The Zone is the sole reason for this reduction.

By the way, I am now back from vacation for 3 days and am 2 lbs less than when I left.

Oh yea, Rome, the Italian Riviera and Paris were all a blast. I strongly encourage everyone to go. Well, maybe wait until the dollar gets a little stronger.

WOW! That's great!

I was wondering if you were back from the trip yet. Sounds like you had a great time!

We spent a about a week with my daugher and son-in -law in MD. Got back last week. And, guess what? I'm going to be a grandma in Dec!

I'm doing my annual labs in about a week. I'm doing it the backward way...after vacation! Not sure if that's the brave thing or the dumb thing to do!

sue

lost 100 lbs 13 yrs ago, off BP meds, thanks to the Zone diet and Zone fish oil!

hey Sue- do you know what it is that the combination of taking in protein at the same time as the carbs does to your insulin/blood sugar levels. Sears says that i helps control the release of the carb into the bloodsteam, as does fat, but he doesnt explain HOW this happens. Am i mistaken?

Alex, you wrote that Sears says that the combination of taking in protein at the same time as the carbs helps control the release of the carb into the bloodsteam. Where did you see that?

The reason he recommends to eat protein with every meal is because protein is low Glycemic Index and low Insulin Index energy source. And it stimulates the release of glucagon (page 70 The Anti -Inflammation Zone). So it helps your body burn fat.

High level insulin causes store fat. Low level insulin and higher level of glucagon helps body to switch from storing fat to burning fat.

High Glycemic Index carbs have high Insulin Index. Milk fat although has low Glycemic Index, but has very high Insulin Index. So milk fat and high GI carbs stimulate insulin overproduction.

Protein also speeds up metabolism, second reason why it helps to lose weight. But speeding up metabolism makes you age faster, so if you don't need to lose weight, then you don't want to include protein with every meal. Just try to avoid high GI carbs.

In some articles on the internet they say adding soluble fiber slows down carbs absorption. But I was experimenting with all sorts of fiber, everything available on the market, mixing it with freshly made grapefruit juice (2 grapefruits portion), and it didn't make any difference, in all cases my glucose level was shooting up from 80 to 200 in 30 - 45 min.

Glycemic Index shows how fast blood sugar level rises,
Insulin Index is how rapidly your insulin rises in response to a meal.

http://www.bodyactive-online.co.uk/nutrition/hormones/insulin/InsulinIndex/IIDifference.asp

The higher GI - the higher Insulin Index. But some foods (milk fat in particular) have low GI, but high Insulin Index.
This guy is saying because milk fat contains Myristic Acid
