And, just when you thought I was finished on this topic, I received more information from Dave Schreck. I had sent him an email, asking: "What is the difference, if I choose to eat a store-bought pasta (plain, no added protein) and just ate a portion that was equivalent to one carb block, and then accompanied it with ample protein/fat and favorable carbs?" This is his response: "Sure that’s acceptable. Most regular store bought pasta calculates at ¼ cup for 9g of carbs. With added protein, favorable veggies and a little olive oil you’ll have a balanced meal." |

Hi Cici!
Cook book! :) Happy to hear your like my recipes! Believe it or not, I don't really use recipes too often. I mostly come up up with them on the spot as I put dinner together. We rarely have exactly the same thing twice, except for a few favorites.
Yes, I thought it was time I put a new pic in there! :) I'm going to try to figure out how to link to a little photo gallery from my signature here, like Matt has done, to display some before and after's as well as meal pix. (When I have the time!)
Have a great weekend Cici!
Cheers! |

| Hi all, I have solved the problem of pasta in the Zone. I bought some "hsiao kuan dou" noodles from an asian grocery. It has 5gm protein, 1gm fat and o carbs per 50gm serve. I made a sauce from tomatoes, onion, tomato paste and lean minced beef adding enough favourable vegetables to balance the meal into a 3 block serve. This was sooo filling I had trouble eating it, my stomach must have shrunk LOL. It tasted really nice and satisfied my craving for pasta without any pasta at all. Great stuff. |

Jan, I think that this is a really good solution to the pasta dilemma! I have heard other zoners post about eating Asian "pasta", and seems as if many of them are just like you said, very low in carb. In addition, instead of eating "pasta", I usually sub in spaghetti squash. I think it is delicious! |

Jan, thanks for the info about "hsiao kuan dou" noodles". Sounds so good the way you prepared them. I'll go have a look for them at the market.
Cran - the few times I've tried the spaghetti squash I wanted to hurl. There's just something about the texture that is so unagreeable with me. :( |

Hi Jan! Thanks for the tip! I'm curious, what are the ingredients of the ones you bought? |

Hi, Cici! Spaghetti squash can be a bit "fussy" to work with. I don't really like it if I have overcooked it, because then you really taste more of the squashy taste. But, if it is cooked "al dente", it is much better. Oh, and a really nice benefit of using spaghetti squash is the vitamin content. Of course, each veggie has different antioxidants, and is sometimes dependent on color. As I think of the veggies and fruits that I eat, there are not too many others that are yellow. So, getting the spaghetti squash in is a great way to get more "yellow-veggie" antioxidants. |

Hi Sue The packet says 88% flour 11% water and 1% salt but most of the packet is in Japanese so I don't understand it sorry. I don't know what sort of flour has no carbs which is a pity. I still haven't tried to make pasta with soy flour and eggwhite yet but I will try. |

Thanks Jan! I wondered about the ingredients because those I found online contain only wheat flour, starch (whatever that refers to), salt and water. |

Jan, Perhaps the carb content was low enough that it wasn't required to be listed on the package. If this is so, then based on the ingredients (flour), it would still be an unfavorable carb. However, on the positive side, there is so little of it, that I think it would work into the Zone nicely because of the zone ratios, in that it would not make up more than 25% of the carbs in a meal. Thanks for sharing! |
Posted By snickers on 07/19/2008 2:21 PM Hello, long time since I have posted! Scanning the discussions, I was curious about the pasta, and I found this very interesting thread. Lots of comments regarding the pasta. Did anyone hear back from customer service? Can't remember who was going to check on that? Sue, there were some questions on this thread that you didn't address, wondering if you missed that, or what was going on there? Personally, I find it fascinating that you are such a fan of the pasta. I would have had you pegged as one who would be more skeptical of such a product being recommended by Zone Labs. Personally, I think that the pasta product is a marketing scheme. I don't believe that they could change the wheat and make it a low-glycemic product! But, would love to hear more!
Just bumping up my post to the top. I see that the verdict came through from Zone Labs. I didn't notice whether Sue had commented after the Zone Labs information was posted. |

But would like to hear more. I think we are still dealing with an unfavorable carb in that product, but what is interesting is how they determine the "net carb". When dealing with the unfavorable carbs, keeping them to no more than 25% of your total carb. Or, in terms of blocks, no more than a block's worth. That is, if you are interested in staying in the Zone. |

This has sure been an active discussion. Good to see some alternate views on the pasta. I probably would have ordered it without giving any consideration to the ingredients, if I were a newbie just starting. Just a comment, hope you don't think I am being overly critical, but if you post a recipe that has more than it's share of unfavorable ingredients, it might be helpful to newbies to put that information in the post. |

| Sue, I bet that pesto would taste great on some spaghetti squash, too! And, much more zone friendly! Plus, then you could add your own protein and fat. Now, that sounds like a great meal. |
