Here's a tip on a yummy dressing and marinade. It's "Cindy's Kitchen All Natural Rosemary and Roasted Garlic Vinaigrette Sugar Free Dressing Marinade". It's delicious! The fat in it is from olive oil and canola oil and the ingredients are Zone friendly. One talbespoon of dressing contains 2 fat blocks and no carbs. It's made by Custom Blends, Inc. in Brockton, MA and is usually found in the fresh produce section under refrigeration. There are othe variteties as well, but not all contain Zone friendly fats. For those who live in the greater Hartford CT area, you can find it at Highland Park Markets.

A couple different ways I use it are as a dressing in a simple salad of romaine lettuce, chopped tomatoes and chopped deli ham, and as a marinade for chicken.

Hey Thanks Sue! The dressing sounds great, and will be a nice change from my regular vinegar and oil dressing (which I love).

Do you use any of Paul Newmon's dressings? Just wondering how those fair.

I got it at Highland Market in Coventry on rte 44, if you happen to be over there. I've noticed Highland Markets don't all carry exactly the same things. The one at Evergreen is the only place around Hartford I can find Cascadian Farms Organic cherries now. They use to be everywhere, even in S&S, but no one else is stocking them anymore. They have the least instances of ocassional pits, and keep me in the Zone better than any other brand.

Sue, can you tell me about Cascadian Farms Organic cherries and what you use them for? Are they frozen, do you cook with them or do you eat them as a regular fruit? I have never heard of them. Thanks!

Question:
Have you gone to Trader Joes in West Hartford? If so, what are your favorite things there?

Yes, frozen. I use them in a smoothie that I frequently eat for breakfast. Here's the recipe,a variation of a Zone recipe that is tweaked to meet my needs (3P, 2C, 6F) and to include inflammation lowering ingredients:

1/4 frozen organic (OG) banana

1 generous block frozen OG dark cherries (I use Cascadian Farms brand, and I've found that I can't stay in the Zone very well with this meal when I use other brands of cherries.)

1 heaping T cocoa raw powder (not dutched, which means not treated with alkali)

3 blocks Zone Protein Powder (3 scoops)

1/2+ tsp. turmeric (refer to info in The Anti-Inflammation Zone)

a very generous amont of cinnamon (lowers insulin response)

a scant 1 tsp. alcohol free glycerin based almond flavoring

1/8 to 1/4 cup of chocolate soymilk, just to help it blend better (I use "West Soy Unsweetened" because it has barely has 1g insulin stimulating C to a block)

1T Zone OG olive oil

Blend with a hand blender. Makes one very thick and delicious chocolaty breakfast and keeps me in the Zone very well (I'm carb sensitive). Sometimes I'll also add a tablespoon or two of plain yogurt.

You can also freeze it in one block amounts to eat for a quick snack.

TJ's in W. Htfd. Yes, I've been there. Honestly, nothing there is a favorite of mine, LOL! Their veggies aren't usually that fresh, they don't carry certain foods we like (certain brands), etc. If I had to pick one thing I like there, I'd say their frozen fish is usually nice. I don't even go there anymore. I like Whole Foods in Glastonbury. It's a supersized version of the WF in W. Htfd. Great stuff there. Try the seaweed, sesame and ginger salad in vegan section of the lunch/meal bar area. It's sooooo good! There's absolutely heavenly gelato there, too (at the Gelato Bar, by the in-store Dim-Sum restaurant). The gelato's made specially for the store by place in Newport, RI. Try the olive oil gelato. It's my "once in a while" absolute favorite unfav C!

Sue, I checked out our markets today, and no one has that yummy sounding dressing from Cindy's Kitchen. I did find their phone number online and called and left a message as to where I might find it where we live. Hoping they call back tomorrow. I even checked Amazon, but no luck.

Are there other bottled dressings that you know of and use that are okay for the Zone diet?

Thanks!

I would recommend looking at bottles of "Newman's Own" dressings. While I can't say for sure on the dressing, I do know that I prefer his brand of spaghetti sauce to othe brands, as the list of ingredients appears to be more pure (less of the stuff that we don't need).

Hi Cici!

You're welcome!

No, I don't use Newman's Own brand dressings because the first ingredient on each one I've seen in stores is soybean and/or canola oil. Soybean oil is an omega 6 fat which we try to avoid adding as an oil in the Zone, with the exception of sesame oil. For that reason alone, I stay away from that brand.

Here's some more info on Newman's Own:

Linda,

I found even more flavors of Cindy's Kitchen dressing/marinade this monring in the produce section at Highland Market in South Windsor (at Evergreen). More than twice as many varieties as they had in their Coventry store! But you have to look closely at the ingredients because some contain sunflower oil for the fat. Also be cautious about the carb grams on the nutrition label. They differ among varieties from 0 to 8 grams of carb per 2T serving. I tired the feta and black olive variety for lunch today. It was very good.

Thanks for the link, Sue.

If anyone chooses to use the link, you will find an olive oil and vinegar dressing. Now, this dressing IS a blend of olive oil and vegetable oil (soybean and/or canola oil). The first ingredient is the olive oil, and so I would assume that the oil oil predominates, or that there is at least a 50/50 split between the 2 oils.

Maybe not "preferred" in the Zone as far as omega 6 fat goes, but definitely not the worst thing in the world, either.

And, what is more impressive to me is that this Newman's Own salad dressing is made from natural ingredients. There are no preservatives, no "unknown" greek or latin works on the ingredients list.

With very few exceptions, I am getting to be anal about eating foods that have ingredients that I can pronounce!

Thanks for the heads up on Evergreen Walk Highland Sue. It is closer to where my destination always is....the Mall......ha ha ha ha! :)

I use good seasons in the package and mix it with my own olive oil and white balsamic. I use less oil and more vinegar than called for and it comes out pretty good. I sometimes add gorgonzola sprinkles to my salad which gives it a wonderful taste.

I can't remember ... you get to pick 8 scoops worth !

Not kidding either.

It's called "The Kitchen Sink" and comes in a bowl that - looks just like a kitchen sink complete with faucets.

I wish I knew how to post some photos somewhere so you can see this creation being made. I photographed the whole thing. They serve these at DisneyWorld at the Yacht and Beach Club Emporiium known as "Beaches and Cream".

For starters you get 8 scoops of ice cream and a whole can of whipped cream - that's right - as in a "whole can".

This is just the "base" - THEY BUILD FROM THERE UP.

Last time we ordered one it was $21.95.

It's perfectly "balanced" for a 300 pound gorilla.

E.Wally

ewally@verizon.net

Send me an email and I'll send you the photos of one being "assembled".

The very best part is when they take out a new can of whipped cream, turn it upside down, press the nozzle, and hold it until it runs out !!!!

They put the Belgian chocolate sauce on from one of those squeeze containers like the kind mustard comes in - but they don't completely empty it - only about half.
