Howdy - It's possible I'm being a little anal here... Please let me know how you guys do this.

When measuring out strawberries - the common measurement for 1 carb block is 1 cup. Now depending on how the strawberries fit into that cup it makes the amount vary. I saw somewhere that a gram weight for 1 cup = 140g. Would it be better to measure the strawberries by weight vs. cup? Should I waste time with being that precise?

When measuring or weighing out the proteins, should they be weighed pre or post cooking?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You're right thah it's a waste of time to be that precise with strawberries. In fact, once you get used to what a cup (a block) of strawberries looks like, you can do away with the measuring cup too.

The weights of the meats, fish and poultry on the block list is befiore cooking, with the exception of things that are obviously purchased already cooked, such as deli -style meats, sadrines, canned tuna, etc.

dont use the 140 g as a measuring strategy for the strawberries- just because, 140g of strawberries coulg be alot less or more than a cup of strawberries (weight vs shape) , im just as anal as you an i just dicem up, it usually ends up being 4 large strawberries is equal to one cup once they are diced up. Now i can just grab 4 large ones out and not have to measure anymore

So is the cup of strawberries supposed to be a cup of slices or a cup of whole strawberries - that alone makes a HUGE difference.

Thank you Sue for the info on the pre vs post cooked foods. I'm certainly not challenging you - I am curious though where your info comes from? Perhaps I should invest in Dr. Sears' book??

It's been clarified in the past, and also found in Zone books (recipies).

I highly recommend reading a Zone book if you haven't. "The Anti-Inflammation Zone" is the newest book and gives an excellent overall picture.

Don't sweat in on the strawberries. One approximate cup will do.

To me, it is a matter of taste as to how precise one wants to be in the Zone. I prefer to measure things out, rather than to "guess". I usually use measuring cups, but if there are things that vary by volume, such as your strawberry measurement, I will weigh it out instead.

A good example of that is the Zone cereal. I forget how much the package says for a serving, but I never get the right number of servings if I use the measuring cup. So, I weigh the cereal, and I find that the weighed measure is nowhere near what the volume serving size is.

lynn, it's fine to eat rhubarb (2.5 to 3 cups = 1 C block). It's the sweentning you add that'll get you in regard to the Zone.

according to the zone books, 1.5 tablespoons is one block, in regard to terryaki sauce, however, when using the label, that only adds up to about 4g of carbs... it doesnt add up?

The zone blocks are estimates. I always read the label on anything that is packaged and use those numbers. I use the zone measurements for things like fresh fruit & vegetables or meats & fish.

I've found teriyaki sauce that has 12g carbs in 2 TBS and I've found one that has 7g carbs in 2 TBS.

Hi!

I'd like to know how to measure my deepfrozen (coal)fish. According to Dr. Sears, one block is 30g (instead of 45g, for example). It's a package of 400grams and there's 17g protein per 100grams.

So, should I consider the whole packet as a
1) 13 blocks: 400g/30g = 13.33 ~ 13 blocks), OR
2) 10 blocks , counted more precisely: 17g x 4 = 68g of pure protein, which leads us to 68g/7g = 9.71 ~ 10 blocks

I think there must be something wrong with me because I kind of enjoy of being precise but as I'm a student with a quite modest budjet it makes a big difference in the end!

Thank you for tips!
