Hi! I'm a "newbie" to The Zone Diet... Are Dr. Sears' products (cereal, bars, etc.) available ONLY on-line or are they available in supermarkets and/or health food stores?

Thanks for any info.!

Angela and Nina,

Zone Labs bars are not in retail stores. Angela, you may have seen bars in Sam's from other companies that use the name Zone (e.g. Zone Perfect). They are not the same bars, and Barry Sears does not endorse them. Many individuals find they cannot stay in the when using bars purchased retail. BTW, Zone Labs bars are under US patent in regard to their ability to control insulin.

I have been buying the Zone cereal, same one as sold on this site, at Whole Foods.

Angela, which bars did you see?

I have been looking for the Hershey Smartzone bars for a long time, not sure if they stopped making them or not. Anyway, when they first came out, Sears had endorsed them.

Nina,

You can find the Zone cereal in some retail grocery stores. You should check the health food section.

I am not aware of any other zone products that are sold retail, though.

Hi, again, Ladies! Sue, I was in Wal-Mart today and I bought two boxes of "Zone Perfect" bars... To me, a relative "newbie" to The Zone, they looked VERY similar to the Sears-endorsed bars... For example, one of the boxes of "Zone Perfect" bars, the "Chocolate Peanut Butter" ones, had the following nutrition info.: Per bar: 210 calories, 7 grams of fat (saturated fat = 4 grams and trans fat = 0), and 25 grams of carbohydrates (dietary fiber = 3 grams and sugars = 17 grams). Isn't this virtually the same as the Sears-endorsed bars? I really want to make sure that I'm eating things that are good for me and in keeping with The Zone program... Thanks, in advance, for any feedback you can give me...

~All the best,
Nina

Hi Nina,

While they appear Zone balanced on paper in regard to P, C and F, they do not do the same thing in the body in regard to insulin control, so no, they are not the same. For a comparison, take a minute to think about virtual reality, as in a state of the art video game, say a boxing match. While it looks the same, sounds the same, may even make you psychologically feel like you're in a boxing match, it is still not the same as being in an actual boxing match. Far from it, because some of the physical sensations of being in a actual match (taking real punches, for one thing) are missing. Zone Labs bars differ from the other bars out there in that they have successfully been forumlated to provide excellent insulin control, and have been tested on diabetics, regarding insulin control, going back many years. In fact, they are patented in regard to their ability to control insulin.

Thanks so much for clearing up my confusion, Sue! I really appreciate it! I may have A LOT more questions to ask in the coming weeks as I get used to The Zone program... It's great to know that I can come to this forum and ask questions of people who are "in the know," like yourself...

Nina,
Since you bought them, no hurt trying. If you wait a week or so to get the feel of the zone down and understand how your body feels when you get it right, then try a half a bar for a snack. If you don't last as long with this as your 1 block snack then they may not be for you. I do use them from time to time. I find different flavors keep me full longer than others. Go figure. They are ok to have on hand for an emergency snack or sometimes I have a two block meal with a 1/2 bar for dessert.

Hi! to add my 2 cents worth...

I agree with Cheril's advice. Wait until you truly know the feeling of being in the Zone, and then try 1/2 bar, and you will know if it keeps you in the Zone or not. Everyone's reaction to bars is always a bit different--individual. So, what works for some may not work for others.

I would not write them off just because they are not endorsed by Dr. Sears. Sears obviously would say that his product is superior to others, that it has been specially formulated to have little effect on insulin, etc. However, I would imagine that if you were reading it from the other side, the manufacturers would basically say the same thing!

Thanks, Ladies! ...Yeah, I've all ready purchased them, so I don't want to throw them out... They're good until next year, so it's not like I to have to eat them all RIGHT AWAY! Good advice!

I wouldn't waste them, either. They may come in handy for an emergency snack here and there, those situations when there is nothing else to eat. Would probably be better than going without, or eating something totally unbalanced.

Personally, they don't work as well for me, but it is a personal thing. Some say that the ZP bars work just fine for them. And, some even feel that the balance bars work just fine, too. At least, you can get your hands on those bars without having to wait a week for the next shipment!

Hey Nina, zone perfect bars work great for me, as well as South Beach bars and Balance bars......rocky road is my favorite! the Balance bars are smaller so I eat a whole one.....havent done the math there on P,C and F but all I know is that they do work for ME......you'll just have to see what works for you. I dont like the limited flavors in Dr. Sears Zone bars online. And, I like the flavor in general of the Zone Perfect bars as well as the texture. My favorites are the Chocolate Peanut Butter and the Chocolate Caramel ones. The South Beach texture is not as good for me but some of the flavors work , AND, actually when it comes to the P,C and F balances all three brands in the stores are about the same. The SB and ZP bars, you would only use 1/2 bar for a snack.

Having said all of that, its still better to use food for your snacks than to use bars, and, as you are reading, bars dont work at all for some people. Like the others suggested, when you're in the Zone with food.....then, if you're out and about and need your snack, try 1/2 of one and see how it works! A snack should be around 4 hrs. after a meal but only about 2 hrs before you expect to have another meal , to stay balanced.

I bought a box of Zone Perfect bars thinking they were created by Sears. I eat 2-block meals every three hours so one bar is about right for 2 blocks. However, I was hungry an hour and a half after having one (only half-way between meals for me), so they don't work for me.

I do 3 block meals so to have half a bar in the middle of the afternoon, a couple of hrs. before dinner, helps to keep my blood sugar level until I can get dinner on the table. Then, if I dont have anything suitable for my bedtime snack, I eat the other half, but usually I try to do "food" instead at that time.
I hope the Zone works well for you, whatever your reason for going on it, Nina.
