quick question... do you know if Kellogs' All-Bran cereal could be considered "somewhat" favorable carb? (nutritional data: http://www.dietfacts.com/html/nutrition-facts/kelloggs-all-bran-original-high-fiber-breakfast-cereal-with-natural-wheat-bran-3298.htm )

Given the sugar that the product contains, I assume it is not good for daily consumption. However, due to my looong working hours, I am looking for healthy quick fixes that I could occasionally use as a back-up.

I will really appreciate hearing your opinion!

No, it's not. You could try the Zone cereal. It can be purchased on this stie, and also at Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and probably other places, too.

Fat=1g (Meaning you need to complete with about 8g more of Fat)
Protein=4. (Meaning you need to complete with 17g. more protein)
Carbs=23g. (Meaning you almost have your carb. count and need to complete with 4g. more)

So you pretty much need to prepare a zone meal and add the cereal on the side. Might as well go with the Zone Cereal witch is already balanced... :-)

please make sure I have this correct:

1/2 cup of the Zone cereal contains 14g protein, 11g net carbs and 7g fat which translates into 2P, 1C and 2F assuming 3g fat per block in this case. Correct so far?

What if I eat 1 cup for breakfast and only use a small amount of skim milk (1/2 cup or less). I usually leave at least half of that amount of milk left in the bowl. Is it safe to say this would be a good breakfast, as it would result in 4P, 2C and 4F, with just a little more P and C due to the small amount of skim milk. I could then add a piece of fruit for the remaining 2C.

Answer yes and I will stop at Whole Foods on the way home since breakd=fast has been my hardest meal to get down - LOL

I love cereals too and I am always thinking about eating cereals in the zone. I will buy the zone cerelas but the postage from america to austria is very high. So I've found some cerelas from keloggs. "Day Vita" have 50g of carbs but also 22g of fibre, that means that ther've only 38g carbs on 100g of day vita.
So I could eat 50g of day vita (2blocks of carbo) and 1 block milk with a little protein powder...
It contains a little sugar, but I don't want to loose any weight and just stay on my 110lbs...d'you think I can handle it like that?

thanks so much

Richard,

I have checked this out with customer service a few years ago when the cereal first came out, and they told me that you don't have to subtract the fiber to get the net carbs. So, if that is true, you would not have to add the fruit to make up for the missing carb. I have asked WHY one would not subtract fiber to get net carbs, and they were not able to give me a rationale for that.

So, when you eat the cereal, I would suggest trying it both ways, as an experiment. If you stay in the Zone without adding the fruit, then you would not have to add it.

Cranberrycat -

I don't know why they would subtract fiber most of the time, but not in this case. However, it does make sense that the cereal is really "balanced" so you wouldn have to add anything. It seemed odd to me that the carbs were half the P and F. Maybe the info you got is correct.

Question: since I've only been doing this for almost 3 days now, I don't know if I'm in the zone yet. How will I know when I arrive? How will I know if fall out of the zone?

Question: a friend turned me onto the zone and he is skeptical about the cereal. apparently, he thinks the ingredients don't all look zone friendly. Have you tried the cereal and what do you think?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi Rich! Welcome!
You'll know you're in the Zone when that balanced meal lasts 4 hrs.....meaning, you arent hungry for 4 hrs. after eating it. If you get hungry sooner, than something wasnt balanced right, i.e. you needed the extra C, etc. And, dont forget your two snacks a day. They really help to keep that blood sugar level.

Have a blessed day,

Alene -
I guess I must be in the zone then because I really haven't been hungry. The nice thing is I also haven't had that real full, bloated feeling like I used to get all the time from overeating. I just feel confortable all day long, except for maybe in the morning. It's been 3 full days and the scale has move a couple of pounds (probably doesn't mean much) but, more importantly, my pants feel a little bit more comfortable.

Have a great day!

I tried the Zone cereal this morning, without adding any additional carbs. It wasn't bad, although certainly not Special K (my fav). Let's see how long I last this morning and if I get hungry before lunch. If I do, I will incorporate a 1 block snack mid-morning and reduce my lunch to 3 blocks.

Aside for shopping every night, this is kinda fun,

I found that things tasted "different', but "ok" and then I got more and more away from the sugars and they tasted better and better! So, if it works for you in the way of lasting, then all the better you're getting away from sugar and other unfav. additives! Sounds like you're "zoning" to me! ;o)

Have a blessed day!

LOL!

Did you get hungry? If so add some borrise next time, or try 2 blocks cereal with a little milk and fruit, and eggwhites on the side to make 4 blocks. I know, that kind of defeats the purpose of being able to grab a quick bowl of cereal.

BTW, I read a short article on drsears.com that said you have leeway to add some fruit to Zone Cereal. As for the skeptical friend, I understand this particular cereal was chosen for it's low GL. I like the fact that Zone Labs had begun carrying some more foods that fit into the Zone, like this cereal and the new pasta.

Sue -

I did not get hungry. It worked out great. In fact, it was a weird day and I found myself 5.5 hours after breakfast and no lunch in sight. So I had another bowl of cereal. I realize it's probably not a good habit to get into, but it worked out great today.

Adding some blueberries to the cereal sounds really good to me.

BTW, what's borrise?

Have a great weekend!

Not hungry...very cool! Another bowl, ha!

"borrise"...one of my famous typos! (berries)

Thanks, you have a great one too. We're snowbound here in CT for the moment, but I'm sure we'll be plowed and shoveled out by mid-day tomorrow. :)

I'm glad I asked before making a fool of myself at the market looking all over and asking for "borrise"

"It has to exist. A very smart person on a website told me about it"

We didn't get too much accumulation up here in MA, but the roads were pretty bad.

Good thing they don't have a spell check on here (I don't see one at least). I'd have to spend way too much time using it.

"Very smart"...hmm...you must have just read my brian surgery post on here the other day.

We got about 9 or 10 in. (we're up on a hill, east of Hartford), and I heard that mixed precip/ice might come up here before it ends tonight. We have a neighbor who loves his snowblower. Seems just doing his driveway isn't enough to satisfy him, so he does ours and another one sometimes. Crazy, but hey, we love it! We're keeping our fingers crossed that he'll get out there tomorrow morning before we do.

actually, it looks like we may have gotten 6" or 8" - I've been home since 12:30 so I didn't really pay too much attention. I'm so used to spell check fixing my email typos, I was surprised to see how many I let get through here.

Have a great weekend and I hope you're neighbor takes care of you tomorrow - afterwards send him about 1.5 hr north to my house

So, have you "snow-bunnies" been getting a lot of snow all winter, or is this your first really big snowstorm?

We have had very snowy winter. We are close to breaking a record for snowfall, and we technically have one more month of snow to go. March is known to give us some heavier snows. Anyway, last week, we had an 8 incher, and then a few days later we got another 12 inches. It has been an interesting week, rebounding from those. We are supposed to get more coming up on Monday.

I can't remember, but quite a few posts back I had posted about the zone cereal and how "they" had said NOT to subtract the fiber. I was trying to remember the rationale, and I think that they said that they don't subtract fiber if it is 5 grams or less. But, again, it has been so long ago since I had placed that phone call, difficult to remember.

I like the taste of the cereal, and it normally holds me fairly well. Not as well as a zoned bowl of oats would, but still good in a pinch.
