Hi all! Thought it would be good to start a discussion of places you can eat that have good choices on the menus. This came about last night, after Jeff and I went out for dinner. We chose Smokey Bones BBQ over Famous Dave's because I knew I could get fresh green beans at SBBBQ, and Famous Dave's is all about the bad carbs. Anyway, I was delighted to see that the new menu has several favorable carbs now. In addition to the fresh green beans they've always had, you can get steamed broccoli or asparagus. They did have some unfavorable choices as well, but it was nice to see these on the menu. They also have several promising looking salads. I had the smoked turkey, which was absolutely delicious! I hadn't ever tried it, and it turns out it's better than the pork and beef they are famous for, IMHO. Of course, I didn't even touch the piece of greasy garlic bread served with the meal--but it was not hard to resist. Smokey Bones is in the same corporate family as Olive Garden and Red Lobster. ALSO, we went to Perkins a few weeks ago (Jeff was craving comfort food, aka boring food) and they did have some steamed veggies on the sides list as well. I had the roast chicken, which was delicious. I was surprised at how tasty it was--the spices used were very good, and there was plenty to take home. I can't remember which other sides were available. So, if you have positive menu-change experiences to share, please do! :) Ronica

Legal SeaFoods no longer carries ZONE friendly meals. I was down in southeren Boston for a fw days on business and went to Legal seaFoods because it was supposedly had Zone frindly meals. No more. When asked why, I was told not enough people asked for them. Why can't american restaurants just cut down on the amount of protein (meat) portions? Because people don't realize how much they're actually paying to eat out. And if restaurants cut down on the size of portions, people would be out-raged at the lack of value per dollar. My wife and I, now just order one "Petit" portion (8 oz steak, etc.) and split it in half. Also notice it is harder and harder to get green vegetables at restaurants anymore? I remember when I was a kid and a teen, that in going out to eat, one always got two (albeit tiny) dishes of sides with each entree. 99 restaurant doesn't like to advertise it, but you can ask for Brockley. A lot of places may also have (albeit usually sweetened) aplesauce. And thoe only other possibly reasonable alternative is cole-slaw, but usually laden with (Sat Fat heavy) mayo.

Sorry to hear that, John! Sounds like a disappointing meal. As far as I know, restaurants don't give veggies because per ounce they are a lot more expensive than unfavorable carbs such as bread and potatoes (french fries). I remember them telling us at a restaurant I worked at to give them lots of bread and fries because they were cheap and people felt like they got more for their money. Frankly, I'd rather pay 20$ for a deliciously cooked, well-balanced meal than $8.00 for a humungous burger and enough potatoes for the entire block. But I guess that's me! All I can say is that things are starting to look up. Here in Madison (which is a pretty progressive town, what with all the liberal hippies who reside here and the large university) we are starting to see more favorable carb and veggie side dishes offerred at many restaurants. I can actually find on the menu sides of broccoli, green beans, and sautéed veggies that are at least a little closer! My husband loves to eat at a middle eastern place on State street because the proprieter has so many people on "special diets" (as he calls them) of no pita, no rice--that he gives them lots of extra veggies and hummus and charges them LESS. He now knows Jeff by sight, and calls out "special, no pita, no rice" as soon as he sees him! (Jeff loves it!) I've even noticed that Perkins, of all places, has more veggies as side dishes. Keep looking! If we keep asking, I think things will change. People comment all the time on how "good" I look and how healthy I eat and how much energy I have. The times, they are a changin'.... Ronica

Ronica, I don't know if your experience dining out has been limited, but practically every real sit-down restaurant I ever eat in offers a small steak, grilled chicken breast or salmon. I have never had a server who is not very accomodating when I ask for the rice or potato side to be replaced with steamed vegetables. I even ask if they can hold all the carrotts, and I usually get asked which green veggies I prefer. The restaurant doesn't have to be that expensive or fancy. Casual chain places like Applebee's, Damon's, Max&Erma's, &c. These places also all serve a ceasar salad with grilled chicken, salmon, or tuna. (Even McDonald's has the salad) Smokey Bones sounds like a fun place. Just try to avoid the BBQ sauce, french fries and cornbread. Do you have Swiss Chalet up there? If not, it's worth a trip across the border: rotisserie chicken with a side of veggies or salad.

I am priveledged to live here in Madison, where we have more bars and restaurants per capita than just about anyplace in the US, so we have lots of options! Most of the time we don't eat at "chain" restaurants, because there is a wide variety of great local places to eat here, but they really don't apply to everyone outside the area. I was just trying to get a discussion going that would apply to people all over. :) I know from growing up in North Dakota that not every area has such a diverse restaurant community (for ND, "ethnic" means Taco Bell. ) . I have had great luck with getting zone-friendly meals at local restaurants. I think my years as a server have also been a benefit--I know what's back there, and can figure out what to ask for! :D One of my favorites, which I have found at both a local brewpub and at a local Food Fight restaurant (this is a local company which owns many unique restaurants in the Madison area--Bluephie's for Michelle and Donna) is the traditional french Salade Niçoise, which is a mixed greens salad with steamed green beans, some potato (I leave about 1/2 of it), olives, capers, vinaigrette dressing and grilled tuna (usually--at The Great Dane brewpub they make it with the catch of the day). It is wonderful and really fits nicely into the Zone. I get to eat and eat and eat (I am usually the last one done at the table) and I still have energy while all my french fry eating friends are groaning! We also enjoy the occasional (very occasional--Jeff is a grad student! ) trip to a steakhouse (like a traditional supper club.) Wisconsin is quite known for the supper club scene, and I know I can order a petite filet and eat half, I'll get crudités, a salad with vinaigrette, and a vegetable such as green beans or asparagus instead of the potato. A glass of wine, and a possible part of a dessert and I am in heaven! :D About once a year we get to the Tornado Room on the Capitol Square in downtown Madison--makes you feel like you stepped back into the 1940's. Yes, Smoky Bones is quite good, and I mentioned it because of the fact that it is a chain, so I figure there must be more! They made it quite easy to order Zone, without even asking for special treatment, which is nice. The BBQ sauce is in bottles on the table, so you can have a little or none, as you prefer. Famous Dave's restaurant is quite dangerous for me--it's definitely hedonistic to go there. No bones about it, nothing there is healthy! I've never seen a Swiss Chalet here, although there is a local Swiss town (Mt. Horeb) that supposedly has a great restaurant, but again I think it is locally run, and I am pretty sure their specialty is cheese and bread fondue! Well anyway, if anyone has $.02 regarding zone-friendlier capabilities, please post! :) Ronica
