I've been reading (or *trying* to read. . .can't get a quiet moment) the Anti-Inflammation Zone. The exercise outlined in the book is great for someone who has never exercised. . .but I train HARD. . .really hard. . .and now I'm all confused and concerned about what I should be doing to counteract the inflammation the exercise causes.

I am not a professional athlete training for hours and hours a day, but I do train extremely hard (usually two hours a day) every day of the week.

What should I do? Take extra fish oil? Take asprin? Ugh. . .I'm so confused.

Any input/thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I'm certainly no expert at all but there is only so much you can do to help your body's own innate ability counteract inflammation.

Follow and anti-inflammatory diet => steady insulin levels + high polyphenol content (tons of vegetables and berries)

Consume adequate protein and overall calories (increasingly from monounsaturated fats such as olive oil which also happens to be high in polyphenols and has been found to have actions similar to aspirin) to enable your body to repair damaged tissue. I guess some would argue that the quality of protein would make a difference.

Enjoy ever bit of exercise thoroughly and don't worry about it if it makes you happy.

possibly take a bit of aspirin. Dr Sears has mentioned 1/2 a baby aspirin each day.

honestly...this diet makes all the sense in the world but it isn't a guarantee for immortality. as with everything, you have to weigh the costs and benefits and proceed from there. your level of exercise likely causes unneeded stress on your body but if it truly improves the quality of your life, well, who could argue against that?

Hi Amy,

The downside would be elevated cortisol levels. Some helpful things to do would be to support the exercise sessions appropriately with pre and post exercise snacks and/or meals, take an appropriate dose of a Zone Labs fish oil concentrate (in your case either Omega Rx or Eico Rx), take Sea Health Plus (or Polyphenol Plus) daily, and consider splitting the workout into two 1 hour workouts at different times of day.

BTW, I take daily baby aspirin and Eico RX.

Thank you both so much for your input!

Chris: You're right about one thing - my exercise really improves the quality of my life. It's one of the few things that makes me very, very happy. It has also helped me to stay off of anti-depressants for the last three years. I'm sticking with it.

I have only recently started eating in The Zone, though, and am adjusting nicely. I am having a little trouble getting enough calories and blocks in during the day, but I'm working on it. I really want to follow this eating prescription because of family medical history (Type I Diabetes - that believe it or not, starts it's on-set in one's 30's! Totally odd, but it's a fact - mother and grandmother. I don't want it to get to me! And heart disease coming at me from both sides.) and because I've really abused my body in the past because of focusing on "getting/staying SKINNY" rather than being healthy.

Sue! You look fabulous and are an inspiration! 100 pounds? And kept it off this long! You're amazing. Thanks for the supplement advice. I wasn't sure whether I should be taking Omega Rx or Eico Rx . . .I'm currently finishing up a bottle of Krill Oil, but once I'm done, will order the Eico Rx.

Again, thanks so much for such informative responses!

You're welcome Amy!

I'm with Chris to go for it if the exercise is enjoyable and makes you feel good. I thrive on physical activity too. It't fun and makes me feel great! Also, for clarification, note that I meant either Eico Rx or Omega RX would be fine (I wasn't meaning to recommend either one over the other). Either will work. Your choice to go with Eico Rx is a good one.

Thanks for the conpliments! The Zone makes it easy to keep off the weight! Yes, I've actually lost a few over 100 pounds if you count actual stored fat loss as opposed to total weight on the scale (I've gained a little over 10 lb of LBM since then).
