Martin's Profile

Zone Products Used in Training:

Omega|Rx, Eico|Pro, Sweet & Salty Nut Crunch Bar, Zone Cardio Support, Zone Chocolate Shakes, Athlete|Pro, SeaHealth|Plus

Benefits Seen With Zone:

My energy levels have increased since starting with Zone. I am also experiencing a higher level of focus and I stay more concentrated towards the end of long workouts. My recovery time has also increased, leading to quicker gains in my workout goals. I used to have sugar high and lows often leading to tiredness between meals and workouts. Now I’m cutting out the rest/nap between workouts and I have more energy for that afternoon workout.

Best Athletic Accomplishment To Date:

Winning the American Hockey League Calder Cup Playoffs 2006.

Favorite Thing About Training:

To see the gains from your hard work paying off. More strength and quickness in the off season and in systems, conditioning and team work during the season. I add a lot of competitive elements even in my training routine to make sure my training partner (Mike Torney, Tri-athlete, Iron Man Competitor) and I both push ourselves. I love to incorporate the pressure element of winning or losing even in training.

Least Favorite Thing About Training:

Not being able to put 100% effort into training, from injuries to less than ideal preparation or poor conditions/facilities.

Biggest Challenge Overcome:

A 3 year struggle with Plantar Fasciitis. During this time training was very difficult and my performance on the ice suffered as well. After numerous cortisone injections and finally surgery and rehab I am now able to train and compete at full capacity again. With the Zone diet and the Omegas the inflammation is completely gone.

Competition Rituals:

I don’t have any rituals per say, I just try to stay as loose and relaxed as possible until the puck drops.

Favorite Event:

Game 7 in a playoff series or any game where your season is on the line.

Hobbies:

Golf, Squash, Beach Volleyball, VKing (see playvking.com), Spending time with friends and family, Reading, Cooking.

One Fact No One Knows About You:

That I was a regional Judo Champion in Sweden a long, long time ago.

If You Weren’t An Athlete, You would Be:

Undercover agent, fighter pilot (if I was 2 inches shorter) or Captain of a Catamaran offering guided tours of tropical islands.

Average Day Consists Of:

An average non game day in season starts with a 20 minute drive to the rink. I arrive at the rink about hour and a half prior to start of practice. First I spend some time on the bike and stretch to loosen up, maybe kick a soccer ball around to get your reflexes going, or watch game video on the day after a game. During an average practice we spend about 1.5 hrs on the ice, more during preseason and less on days before games. After the ice session, 3 to 4 days a week I also get a weight workout in before driving home to cook lunch or dinner.

An average day in the off season consists of a ride to the University of Vermont work out facility where I spend about 1.5 hours focusing on speed, agility and weights. That is followed by 45 minutes to an hour of conditioning on the ice. After lunch and a few hours by the computer and on the phone I go through a second workout usually consisting of a game of squash, tennis, beach volleyball, pool basketball, hockey scrimmage, soccer or a bike ride.

On the weekends I work on my mental game by playing golf, and my goal is to improve enough to participate in some of the larger amateur golf events.

Favorite Charity:

Humane Society.

Favorite Zone Food / Flavor:

The Pasta and the Zone Chocolate Shake.

I wish Zone made:

Ice cream and a coffee or tea drink.

Long term goals & aspirations:

To continue elevating my game on a personal level and be an integral part contributing to winning championships. Next season that will be helping the Bolzano Foxes of Italy win the Italian League Championship for a third straight year as well as winning the Italian Cup and the Continental Cup.

Person you most admire:

My sister Helen, she is doing an unbelievable job raising two wonderful children, Meja (5) and Oliver (3).
