Mary's Profile

Zone Products Used in Training:

EicoPro Omega-3 Concentrate (4 capsules, at least once a day), Polyphenol Plus (1 capsule, 2x day), SeaHealth Plus (1 oz, 3x day), Zone Bars (at least 1 per day, before / after training), Zone Shakes (2 per day, after a workout as a shake), Zone Cereal (great with yogurt), Olive Oil (every time I cook), Toasted Sesame Oil (great for salads and on roasted vegetables!), Athlete Pro (2 scoops in water bottle during workouts).

Benefits Seen With Zone:

Increased energy, ability to recover more quickly from workouts, less prone to sickness- just an overall feeling of health.

Best Athletic Accomplishment To Date:

Winning the Wildflower Olympic Triathlon (2008) and setting the new course record for women. This was pretty significant in my amateur career because it was my first, official Olympic Distance Race (2006); it’s an amazingly hard course, typically HOT, and unique in that everyone camps out the night before.

Favorite Thing About Training:

I love every aspect of this sport. What I have found in these past two years is that it is all about the process. Each day it’s about discovering more about YOU, learning how hard you can push yourself, and sometimes how to take care of yourself. Training is something I look forward to- I love the grinding, the searching, the pushing, the pulling, the victories, the lessons, the battle itself. And the crazier it gets, the more I love it. Becoming the best you can be at anything means loving the journey - from beginning to end.

Least Favorite Thing About Training:

Redundancy.

Biggest Challenge Overcome:

Learning how to swim and bike…fast!

Competition Rituals:

Something I have done since playing soccer in college- before every game. When the National Anthem is being played I jump up and down a couple of times, shake out each leg, pray silently, smile and say: “What a day to race!!”

Favorite Race:

Columbia Triathlon

Hobbies:

Hiking, cooking, reading, dancing to any type of music, playing board games, girls’ night outs, singing at the top of my lungs, spending time with family (especially my twin sister) and good friends.

One Fact No One Knows About You:

I worked 60+ hours a week in Boston in an advertising agency before leaving and pursuing triathlon fulltime. Before 2005, I didn’t know what a triathlon was, how to swim, nor how to bike outside- clipped in on a bike!

If You Weren’t An Athlete, You would Be:

An event planner.

Average Day Consists Of:

Wake at 6:15am for an easy run; breakfast; Swim 3-5k depending on the day; recovery shake; core or yoga; lunch/nap/emails; Ride and/or Run; recovery shake; errands/emails; recovery workout; dinner/movies; bed at 9pm.

Favorite Charity:

Favorite Zone Food / Flavor:

Milk Chocolate Protein Shake, Coco Crisp Bar, Iced Oatmeal Raisin Bar.
