Manuel Uribe takes to the road

By: Lynn Sears

The most wondrous experiences that Manuel had Aug. 10 were sunshine on his face and wind gently blowing through his hair. It had been a long time since he had those sensations. After spending six years inside confined to his bed, the man who was once the fattest man alive took a day trip.

He’d been out briefly before, but this time he took a longer journey to La Boca in Santiago, Mexico, about one hour away from his home in Monterrey. He chose the location because it was a spot he and his father once enjoyed fishing.

A fork lift was used to hoist Manuel’s bed to a flat-bed truck. A canopy kept him in the shade as the temperatures outside hit triple digits.

A cavalcade of vehicles followed Manuel, including paparazzi hanging out the windows taking pictures. Dr. Sears and his Mexican doctors Silvia and Gustavo Orozco were there to cheer him on.

After being driving down for a long look of the lake, the truck parked in the shade, and Manuel and his family and friends enjoyed a picnic lunch.
