I'll tell you why I am not a vegetarian

When I did the veg thing, I used soy for much of my food. I think soy milk is the real problem. I was drinking it down all the time and I ended up having severe mestural problems and I just never got enough protein.

I think some soy products ( if not all) play with hormones. Well that's my belief.

I started the Zone recently. I can't have any dairy products, but enjoy Daiya Cheese occasionally. I was wondering if anyone has used it and how you count it?

Michelle

Frozen Food?

Hi.

I was wondering about freezer to microwave stuff. I have a lot of that but I'm not sure it would be okay on this diet. The labels seem okay (good, actually) for the Zone but I'm not sure.

Does anyone else eat soy nuggets, soy burgers, soy sausage, soy chic patties, etc.? Use them for their main protein source? Some of these (like those little soy sausages) have 10g of protein packed in a tiny pattie with no carbs! Others, like the nuggets, have a coating so they have some carbs.

Thanks in advance!

Hali

What to do in India!!!

I love the zone. This year I was informed I'm pre-diabetec. in less than a week on the zone I am seeing my morning fasting glucose levels drop! The zone is super easy here in California, wonderful fresh produce, easy access to omega 3's etc...The problem is I'm leaving for an extended trip to India (6 plus months) and I'm not sure how to accomodate the zone diet into what I can find there. No soy, No uncooked salads. and last time I was there, no easy access to fish oils.
Any suggestions???

I think soy protein powder is making me sick

I started supplementing with soy protein powder over a week ago and think it is the cause for my severe stomach cramps and bloat. I actually switched brands to see if that was the problem, but still no luck. I'm really upset about it since I like it very much.

My husband, who is not a big fan of soy, sent me the following article: http://www.utne.com/2007-07-01/Science-Technology/The-Dark-Side-of-Soy.aspx

The women there writes "After years of consuming various forms of soy nearly every day, I felt reasonably fit, but somewhere along the line I'd stopped menstruating. I couldn't figure out why my stomach became so upset after I ate edamame or why I was often moody and bloated. It didn't occur to me at the time to question soy, heart protector and miracle food."

I too lost my period a while ago having been a big soy milk drinker but never was sick or bloated. But now I am, due to the potein powder, I believe.

I just wondered if anyone else has any experiences like this or any thoughts on the matter.

Thanks.

Why I hate soy

I used to use soy in my diet exclusively. I ended up loosing my period for ten years and it never returned. I am 34 and nt in pre-menopause. It never returned. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I have read on line others who have experienced the same effects.

Question about Lentil Soup

Hi all,

I'm coming over to the Zone from the South Beach Diet and am not sure I completely understand it yet.

I just love Lentil Soup and can't figure out is I can use it as a complete meal or how it counts as a carb or protein?

Thanks and all the best,

Edamame

How do I count edamame in my meal plan? Is it considered a carb like a kidney bean, or a protein like tofu? Do I count the carbs in it? The package I have shows a serving has 7 g protein and 8 g carbs. Would appreciate some guidance.

Vegan>Zone Transition

I don't know if this forum is the right one for this but anyhow here goes:

Vegan for 5 years, but rest of family are omnivores.

Enjoy vegan foods but want to be more a part of the family at the table, also, not enough room in freezer/frige for keeping mine and theirs. Also, the hormonal and cardiovascular benefits seem if not an improvement, at least on a par with vegan eating habits.

Anybody else made this move? Zone seems like some work (being more precise about amounts/blocks etc) but I'm tired of being separate. Living in the Midwest there AINT a whole lot of choice if we go out together.

Any Vegans that can help?

I recently started the zone diet but am having trouble with some snack/meal ideas that fit into a vegan diet. Many recipes on the website contain dairy products, especially cheese but I have eliminated those from my diet. There are many rice, soy, and almond replacements out there but they don't provide the same levels of proteins/carbs as their dairy counterparts??? Any ideas on making better balanced meals and snacks? Please help! Protein powder only goes so far!

Soya products and alzheimers

I've read a number of articles on the internet saying that the consumption of tofu and other soy products is linked to the development of alzheimer's disease. Does anyone know where I can find out more? The loss of soya in a vegetarian diet, if following the 'zone' rules, makes things very tricky - especially as the rice/dried beans combination I've always used to get a 'complete' protein is not, apparently well absorbed by the body. Leaves eggs and dairy as the main sources of protein - loads of wasted egg yolks and miserable 'low fat' cheeses...

Question about soy isoflavones and tofu?

So I've started eating more tofu, soy milk, and soy cheese lately, just to add variety to my zone. But I want to make sure I'm not eating too much of it. Dr. Sears recommends consuming no more than 50mg of isoflavones per day, but how do you tell how much isoflavones is in a particular soy product. This morning I had 2 blocks of tofu mixed with 2 blocks of berries, it was great, and the other day I made a berry smoothie with the Westsoy unsweetened almond flavored soy milk. It was great too. But I worry. Is there some source where you can find out how many isoflavones each soy food contains?

Good veg source for Omega 3s?

Hello,

I am working with a friend who is a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I believe she really needs some Omega-3s, but she won't take fish oil. Does anyone have any suggestions for an effective vegetarian source for Omega-3s, other than flax oil? I don't consider flax oil to be an ideal source.

Thanks for your help,
Dawn

Fat, Carbs, and the Vegetarian

Hello,
I have read the blocks and I also have the soy zone book. However, I am still confused. Technically, fake meats, such as fake sausage or veggie burgers are counted as protein. However, I have also read that if there is fat in those items then we don't need to add the fat? Is that true? Does that mean if there are carbs or fat in these fake meat items that the number of carbs or fat should be subtracted from the carb and fat blocks?
An example: Boca Burger All American flame grilled has 120 calories, 5 grams of fat, 6 grams of carb, 14 grams of protein. So, to get my 20 grams of protein for a 3 block meal, I would need 1.5 burgers. But, I will also be getting 7.5 grams of fat, and 12 grams of carb. So, do I need to take that into consideration?
I am very motivated to lose weight on this diet. I have 30-35 pounds to lose.
Thanks!

I’m interviewing an expert and I need your help

Hey there,

I’m new to this forum and I just wanted to start off by saying hi!

I’m working with a doctor that specializes on gluten intolerance and I have interview scheduled with him next week. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you what questions you would have for him. Perhaps you would like to know some natural remedies, or maybe you just want to know what is going on in your body. Remember, there are no stupid questions.

To add value to this thread and forum I will post the interview once it’s done. This will also be as a thank you for helping me out. It will be a direct download link…no email, no forums to fill out. Just take it

I look forward to seeing your questions.
