Omega-6 and AA in Dog's Fish Oil okay?

I have been trying to research some fish oil for my dogs, and I've found a common theme among the fish oils marketed for dogs - they contain small amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids, and Arachidonic Acids...

I know dogs are different than we are, so I thought maybe small amounts are alright for dogs?

Here is the link to the brand of Oil I am most considering, showing the analysis:

http://www.alaskanbeartreats.com/products.html

They test each batch of oil, and can provide reports so I was VERY happy to see that :-)

Thanks for any input!

Dogs and the Zone

can anyone tell me if dogs have a similar metabolic system to ours?
I am wondering if adapting their diet along the lines of the Zone would benefit them too.

Also, what about giving them the Omega 3 supplement?

cheers

Macadamia no=no!

Apparently, Macadamia nuts can be toxic to dogs!
So, my wife, after being good all summer, and feeling her last hurrah before she goes back to work full-time next week
(School starts.) Decided to go out for ice-cream. We got our usual (though hard to say usual when we rarely get ice-cream)
our usual of kiddie cup, no cone, (You believe that a "kiddie" cup is two huge scoops? - BUt its a treat, an indulgence, a guilt-free snack, so we indulged and enjoyed.)
The problem was that unknowingly the crate on our 1-1/2 year old mini austraian shepherd, she thought she latched, it was not.
He is crated, because he is Mr. curious George! We',ve come home to all tupperware containers pulled out and chewed on from the cupboards, pack of 3 new kitchen sponges pulled out and chewed, and packages of light bulbs chewed. Well, this time, we had some vinegars, healthy oils, olive oil and macadamia nut oil in a lower cabinet/pantry that he got into, Unfortunately he chewed the cap of the macadamia nut oil, it leaked onto the floor, and he licked some of it up. As did our other dog (Papillion) who does not get into things at all.
After he threw-up a couple of times, we decided to look it up, and apparently Macadamia Nuts can be toxic to dogs.
After 3 hours later and a nearly $1,000.00 vet bill for two dogs, and a watch for 24 hours, a cancelled tubing trip planned today - they are fine today.
BUT, IT WAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE ICE-CREAM WE EVER HAD.
(And it will take months to pay for it...)
So much for a guilt-free unzoned treat now and then .....
Macadamia nuts/oil - who would have thought?
how would you feed a cat in the zone?

Hello
I am just curious, how would I feed my cat in the Zone? She is older but still healthy and maybe it would give her a little more spring in her step.

thanks
Cleo

Best Food for 12-13 lb. Shih-Tzu? HELP PLEASE

I have a 12-13 pound shih-tzu (so sweet!) and she has been very unenthusiastic about her food for a while now - I don't think she ever really liked this brand. I originally chose it because it seemed to be one of the healthier dog food choices, but now after some research and reading some things in this forum I am learning that it does not hold a candle to the really healthy dog foods.

Does anyone know the nutritional requirements / best balance / specific food needs for a shih-tzu - a small dog that was bred to sit on the emperors' laps in the palaces of China (not super-active but gets enough exercise)? I would like to change her diet (I know to do it very slowly) but I do not know enough yet about what to change it to. I saw something on a post about Buffalo Blue dog food- I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about this or any other brand that might work for her. Preparing my own food for her food from scratch is not a possibility now because I have MS and trigeminal neuralgia pain, and am often unable to cook, even for the human people in my family...

I have seen what a HUGE difference diet makes in how I feel and in the rest of my family, and I am now hopeful about how it can help her, too. I wonder if you know, or know where I can find out more about, what I should optimally be feeding her?

My dog barks for zone snacks..

So I'm eating a zone dinner every night, either the Zone Pasta, Orzo or Pizza, and my lil' white 12 yr old smooth hair chihuaha barks and barks as if I were eating prime rib!

He jumps at my fingers to eat a few bits of Orzo or a crush part that's crunch...

And since he's been snacking on zone foods, he's gotten a tad little chunky. Just wondering, does feeding our pets zone table scraps cause their weight gain? The little critters are quite a bit different than us...

Ratio of carbs/protein/fat for dogs

I was wondering if anyone knew the proper ratio f carbs, proteins, and fats for dogs. I was thinking that if the zone works so well for us, it would be great for dogs too. I'd like to also start giving my dog a fish oil once a day. He's small (12lbs) so I think 1 cap would be fine. Any ideas, or advice from someone who has zoned their dog would be grea.

omega-3's for cats

Just a tip...

I found some Omega-3 powder for cats in my local PetSmart (not sure of the brand off the top of my head). I started giving it to my cats, who had caught a very persistent nasty cough after being exposed to a virus. They were on it for a few weeks and the coughs finally went away! The bag says that for cats with a weakened immune system, you can double their normal dosage for awhile to give them a boost, which is what I did (takes about a week of titrating up to the dose though). Of course there is no way for me to test whether the powder is what helped them kick the cough, but I sure am convinced! :)

Also, it has another benefit - it tastes good! I mix my cats' medicine into their food, but often they can taste it and won't eat it. But if I mix a little of the powder in with it, they eat all the food without a problem. Nice easy way to get them their medicine!

fish oil for cats

Does anyone give fish oil to your pet?

My cat is 17 years old, and he is suffering from arthritis. Today, I had quite a scare, as he must have hurt himself or something, and he wasn't walking right at all. I almost thought that his day had come, but we took him to the vet and she suggested we could try some glucosamine and a pain reliever for him. That got me to thinking, why not fish oil?

I wondered if there was a recommended dose for cats? And, is Zone Labs fish oil ok for cats, or would it have to be a preparation from a pet store?

Revisiting pets messages from May 2004...

[color=green:ea512990d1]Hello everyone-

Just wondering, since over a year has lapsed since the last post, if there are any updates on your pets' health?

Quite honestly, I never gave any thought to feeding my dogs from the Zone. I feed them ProPlan for coats and sensitive skin, but it doesn't help with the dry skin. I have a small (less than 20 pounds) minature sheltie/whippet mix. He has a beautifully design coat, but it lacks lustre. I'm thinking of moving his diet to a more Zone friendly one and adding some cod liver oil or peanut butter. I was just wondering how the adjustments some of you made since May of 2004 worked out.

Fish oil for a small dog

I am recent to the Zone (Soy Zone), and now that I am benefitting from this and the fish oil, I would like to add the oil to my small dog's diet. Everyone seems to have larger dogs on these posts. My dog is almost 14 years old, and I would like to make the rest of his life as good as possible (wish I had known about this sooner). Based on his weight of 18 pounds, can anyone tell me how many mg. to give him per day?

Thanks.

ZONE & Breastfeeding

My son is 2 months old and I recently obtained my post partum release, and am anxious to get started with a weight loss program. I have 15 pounds until my pre-pregnancy weight, but plenty more to lose after that. My question is - Is it safe to do the ZONE diet while breastfeeding? Will it impact production?

Degenerative Myleopathy in GSD

My German Shepherd has DM (it is rather like MS or ALS in humans, an autoimmune disease where the CNS is attacked). She was on a raw diet until about two years ago when she had a stomach torsion. Since then she has been on BilJac (a fresh frozen, but still blended and probably not balanced food) After the torsion, I tried to put her on Oma's pride which is human-grade ground up meat/bone/fat or vegetable or fruit mixture ground up and frozen in a tube (closer to the raw I was feeding but easier to eat and digest, no whole bones, etc.). It made her DM much worse. Back to BilJac and the DM was better.

Does anyone have information on DM (or for that matter MS or ALS) being "treated" (symptoms slowed) with diet? I have one site from a vet in Florida who has a diet mixture I haven't analyzed yet, but thought I might get additional input from someone here...

She is 14 and perhaps the raw diet has given her just that much more time than I would have had otherwise, but she's recently been going downhill more perceptibly and it never hurts to ask! :-) I had another shepherd (mix?) that died 14 years ago at the age of 16 from the same thing. Her kidneys eventually failed as the degeneration progressed up the spine. (her diet was higher-quality-than-pet-store dry food, so just a little better than chips and hotdogs ;-)

Sebaceous Adenitis

It seems our 9 year old Akita has Sebaceous Adenitis, an auto-immune inflammatory condition that destroys the oil glands. There is no cure, and she may lose all of her hair

Treatment is typically EFA supplementation and oil baths but I am unsure that at her age she will tolerate the 2-3 hours it takes to give her an oil bath properly.

So thinking that an oil bath might simply be treating the symptoms rather than the underlying cause, I'm hopeful changing her diet and the fishoil will do some good, essentially suppressing the over-active immune response to begin with and allowing her oil glands to function normally. She is now on a bison/salmon/rice/oatmeal dogfood which we add an EFA+Zinc supplement to. For the past week or so she's been getting 2 capsules of OmegaRx daily. She doesn't seem as "down", but not much improvement in the coat yet. I will introduce the 3rd capsule tonight and will do 3x daily for the next week and see what happens. Given the origin of the breed, I am thinking that her omega-3 requirements may be higher than other dogs, so I'm not too concerned yet with the lack of noticeable results.

How much FO?

My 9 year old boxer dog was recently diagnosed with arthritis, and I want to put him on fish oil.... recently I've been splitting my 4-capsule maintainance dose with him (giving him two caps), but I wonder if I should give him more? It's kind of hard for me to know exactly what dosage gets results, but I'd just like to know where to start. He is 60lbs. Any advice would be appreciated
