Recipes under tools

Hi, my daughter and her husband are doing the Zone and are trying to get me into it. I definitely need to do something and I think I could live with this except it would be hard to give up grains, seriously pasta is unfavorable? In who's eyes? lol.

I found the recipes under the tab "tools." These are great and will help a lot if I decide to go with this diet (lifestyle). My question is the recipe page doesn't tell me if these are 3 or 4 block meals. I think from reading them that they are 3 block but I just want to make sure as I couldn't find where it is spelled out anywhere on the page. Of course it's late and I'm tired so it's possible I'm missing it.

Cindy

Zone and ante-inflammatory diet

I have an auto-immune problem and I was told the paleo diet is good for this. The Paleo Diet says no whole grain or any type of grains and no beans as they cause inflammation problems. As a mostly vegetarian, this sounds like a fate worse than death (not that bad but close ;). I would like to find out if keeping my portions of these within the Zone ratios would keep the inflammation down enough that it would be alright to inclued them in my diet.

What kind of tortilla should I use?

If I am making a wrap or ordering Mexican, which type of tortilla is preferred? Corn, Whole Wheat, or Spinach? Can these be ranked from "Most zone" to "least zone" in case I am at a restaurant that does not have one out of the three? Also could you explain why? I am new to this diet and trying to learn. Did some searches on this but im not sure what the consensus is..

Beef vs. Ground Beef

I"m pretty new to the zone diet, but I had a quick question.

On the mean plans PDF that's offered on the crossfit website, it shows that 1 oz of beef is a block of protein and 1 1/2 of ground beef is a block of protein. What's the difference?

Mixed carbs

hi all,
So I've had a little set back the last few months on the zone after a very successful year. But I started consuming more fruits, although favorable ones, and I started gaining weight and feeling sugar highs and lows. Too much fructose wether processed or natural has detriments.
So I'm ditching fruits for a little while, I am gluten free already, and quite active.
I was considering making 3block carbs as a mixture 1block veggies/1 block beans/1 block rice
Do you think that type mixture will be acceptable; I cannot eat 3 blocks of veggies for each meal--to much volume for me.
And I don't want to have to eat every two hours.
I know a little fruit is ok, but just not for me right now.....I need to reset my liver.
An thoughts, ideas etc would be great:)

Chili

I saw a number of zone friendly chili recipes, but because of where I am currently living, my food options are extremely limited. I modified with ingredients I had on had. I put the info into a nutrition calculator and it came up with 8 1-cup servings = 10gF, 24gC, and 16gP= 6bF, 3bC, 2bP....
What I'd like to know is
1. how to up the protein in the meal....I want to add 1 oz cheese on top, but afraid it will add to the fat...or thought of adding greek yogurt, but didn't want to up the c (I have read both--that Greek yogurt is/isn't considered 1bP and 1bC, so not sure which to believe).
2. how to reduce the fat? Did the nutrition calculator take into account the fat in the meat, which when you are doing zone blocks is omitted? (Does that make sense?)

Any thoughts?
THANK YOU!
Jackie

And if you need/want to know my recipe is as follows:
1 tsp olive oil
1 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic
1 med carrot chopped
1 lb extra lean gr beef
250 grams tomato sauce (8.8 ounces)
500 grams diced tomatoes (17.5 ounces)
2 cans red kidney beans (400 grams each/14 ounces)
1.5 cup water
pinch of chili powder
pinch of garlic powder
Roasted Vegetables

I am new to eating in the Zone and am looking for help. I love roasted vegetables. Today I cut up 1 eggplant, 1 zucchini, 1 orange peper, and 2 portabella mushrooms which came to 8 cups of coarsely chopped veggies. They are all favorable carbohydrates, so that would be 8 blocks of Carbs. I added 2 2/3 tsp olive oil to the bowl, tossed and coated veggies, and then roasted them. I used 2 2/3 tsp olive oil because 1/3 tsp is a block fo F...so I thought I would keep it even. After roasting, I ended up with 2 1/2 cups roasted vegetables. My question is, do I count the Carb blocks before or after roasting? If I count after, do I still count the oil as 8 blocks? And this question goes for any vegetable I roast...mixed or not. I love roasted cauliflower and brussel sprouts as well....they also "shrink" after roasting. Thank you so much in advance for any light you can shed on this.
wine

based on the general 4oz = 1 block of carbs ..... my wine of choice is only 4 carbs per 4 oz ... its a very dry red .... so it would take 9oz for a block based on the 7/9/1.5 ratios if I am not mistaken. is there another reason wine/alcohol would be calculated differently?

Lentils and Dairy.

Hi,

I cannot find these in the Zone book, and I feel it is missing out these very common food groups - Lentils and Dairy. Can someone provide an insight on these?

Are lentils allowed in the Zone? To what extent in the Zone Pyramid? Sparingly, moderately or liberally?

Sure they're carbs but they are some sort of starchy grains in the end, I guess. And they are low GI too.

Also, how about Dairy - Milk, Cheeses etc. They provide significant quantities of P, C and F. Are they allowed, and how much?

Thanks.

Zone CVP Promotion

So I just received a promotion for the (4-Pack) Zone Cookie Variety Pack.
10% off.
So, I thought I'd check the pricing and see if it might be worth while to try again,
(and to see if the sweetness had been reduced.)
.
$11.00 minus $1.00 = $10.00
$10.00 + $8.00 shipping = $18.00
$18.00 / 4 cookies = $4.50 per cookie!
(Auto Ship would save another whopping $1.00,
making it at $4.25 per cookie.)
Doing Zone in China, please help!

Hi, ive been doing the zone for a while but here i could use some advice. Usually when i prepare food for myself at home i know what to eat and what to cook. Now I'm gonna be stationed in China for about a month more on business, living just in a hotel with no cooking possibilities, and not nearly the same selection of food. All tips on amounts, food (specially carbs) will be gratefully appreciated.

I like to stay on 16 blocks + post workout snack.

4 blocks - breakfast 06:00
2 blocks - snack 09:30
4 blocks - lunch 12:00
2 blocks - snack 15:00
4 blocks - dinner 18:30
2 blocks - post workout

My main concern here is the breakfast and carbs through out the day.

For breakfast the only decent alternative i find in the buffet is omelette, bacon and fruit. Not preferred sources but i do not have anything else. Milk here tastes like fish so its out of the question to drink it, also most of the chinese dishes are packed with sugar and vegetable oils. The breakfast is also the meal i could use some help with portion sizes since i never eat eggs.

At work i will eat mostly take away meat or sashimi from the day before with fruit and almonds. Here the carbs are a small problem, good fresh vegetables are hard and i dont even know where to start looking. So my options here is fruit or crackers (full grain).

Dinner will be same as lunch, there is a very good buffét at the hotel with seafood, steaks, fish, you name it. A little vegetables are served but not nearly enough, like there will be maybe 5 brokkolies in a bowl. There is also good restaurants where i can eat pale/zone foods.

For additional fat blocks i will use only almonds since its easy to take with me at all times.

So, what i need help for is really the carb issue and portion size of breakfast (maybe some new tips). Usually when i eat out i dont mind if there is rice on the plate but since im staying here for such a long time i dont want to make it into a daily thing.

Thank you for reading and hope somebody will be able to help me :)

Best regards
René
Fage Greek Yogurt

Hi,

I have some Fage 0% Total Plain Greek Yogurt that I would like to use. The nutrition info is as follows:

1 cup
130 calories
0 fat
9g carbs
9g sugar
23g protein

(No added sugar in the ingredients by the way.)

So am I correct in assuming that this can be considered a protein source since there is at least twice the amount of protein than carbs?

If so, for a 2 block snack, I'm thinking about 3/5 cup would equal about 14g protein. I would then just needs 2 blocks of carbs and 2 blocks of fat: maybe 1 cup of raspberries, 1/2 cup blueberries, and 6 almonds (chopped).

Can someone please confirm that I have this correct?

Thank you!

Confused Women's 7 Day Meal Planner

Hi again,

I must be missing something because some of the meals on the Women's 7 Day Meal Planner don't make sense to me. I'm expecting 3 blocks each of protein, carbs and fat because that's what it says the typical woman should eat.

For the chili lunch day 5, I count 4.5 blocks of protein for the ground beef, and but only about 2 blocks of carbs (1 for the kidney beans, about .7 for the tomatoes, and about .2 for the onion), and 3 blocks of fat. I thought they should both be 3 blocks (or at least make the carbs and fat blocks match the protein blocks).

And the cheeseburger lunch on day 3 has 3 ounces ground beef and 1 ounce cheese which I think is 4 blocks protein in a meal with 3 fat and 3 carbs.

I can't tell if I'm not understanding this or if I'm trying to hard to make everything come out to 3 blocks, but I thought that the point was supposed to be that all 3 be equal numbers of blocks.

how much fruit?
