arthritis in my neck

I've had neck pain for over 30 years. I got an x-ray of my neck, yesterday, and the doctor said I have moderate arthritis, a little disc deterioration, commensurate with my age of 59, and a slight curvature which wouldn't be the cause of pain. He said to treat with anti-inflammatories, heat, stretching, etc. I asked about an MRI but he said it would be hard to get it approved by my insurance based on my x-ray and moderate pain level and that it probably wouldn't reveal anything different than the x-ray.

I don't have swelling like you would see in rheumatoid arthritis.

I have the OmegaRX Zone book. Dr Sears says in it that arthritis should be helped by fish oil so I'm thinking of upping my dose from 8 to 16 pills in about a month when my next autoship arrives.

I'm posting this to see if anyone has experience with using high doses of fish oil + the Zone Diet to cure arthritis. ??

Fiber Monitoring

I've been following the Zone diet like clockwork for around 7 weeks with great results! Then came the colonoscopy this week. Bad news, I have to have between 25-35 grams of fiber daily. That's a lot of veggies, which is no problem. My problem is monitoring the fiber content. I also take fish oil.

Any suggestions?

total cholesterol count

Was recently suprised when my total cholesterol (from donating blood) came back as 128, a point HIGHER than 6+ months ago. Before the test 6+ onths ago, I was stil occassionaly eating hard-boiled eggs and some cheese (some of it low-fat mozzerella)....at least once a week. The recent test results said that if I ate a high fat meal before the test that the results would read a bit higher. I don't think I ate more fat than usual that day.
I must wonder if those new larger and lighter LDL particles influenced it. The blood testing agency, LifeBlood, didn't break it down by LDL and HDL, though.
Just a curious result that I thought I'd share for anyone monitoring their cholesterol. I get the fact that 127 and/or 128 is still very low, but I still thought that getting rid of more saturated fat would knock the total cholesterol count down about 5 points. Now that I think about it, I was even eating less tofu and subbing no-fat soy drinks instead. Hmmm....

Ratio of omega and eico rx caps changes

Hello after DR Sears inroduced Eico rx i have done some self experiments with my ratio and it seemed that 3 omega and 1 eico rx caps worked fine for me... Now that i am in my Masters degree the time for 100% zone diet meals and everyday training sessions seem like a lost paradise.
You think with the propably increased inflamation from the increase on starchy grains i should correspond with a change in my Omega rx - Eixo rx ratio???
Also i notice that when i try liquid and not capsules it has a great effect on me i become very sleepy after a few hours .. any idea why???

Memory Zone

Q: How many of the following 10 principles that involve eating are Zone principles?
A: ll of them!
.

Print

PDF

Email

View Main Category

Static in the Attic: Ways to Enhance Memory And Lead a Brain Wellness Lifestyle

PRNewswire

09-19-12

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Do you ever walk into a room and wonder why you are there? Are you frustrated because you sometimes can't recall names of people, but you recognize faces? Do you ever forget where you put your wallet, keys and/or glasses? Do you find yourself in the middle of a conversation, and suddenly "blank" on the next word you wanted to say?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above, you have plenty of company. All of the above can be normal memory changes as people age. While the frequency of "senior moments" and "tip of the tongue syndrome" increases as we age, it is not necessarily a sign of decline or the signal of impending Alzheimer's disease or other disease process.

There are certain memory changes that are temporary and reversible. Memory is actually a complex system of processes, and there are many variables that can impact any part of the memory chain. Some reversible causes of memory problems include sleep deprivation, stress, multi-tasking, infection, dehydration, vitamin deficiency, depression, colds/flu, sensitivity/reaction to medication or strong emotions.

Contrary to popular myth, and the portrayal of older people by the media, memory can actually get better as we age...but it requires training just like an athlete who trains the body on a regular basis through consistent exercise. Brain exercise should be incorporated into everyone's life on a regular basis.

The great news is that scientists now know that the brain is constantly rewiring itself, adapting and growing new brain cells even throughout the aging process. Not only can a person grow new brain cells, but the more people exercise and challenge the brain, the less likely they will be to develop brain damaging disease later in life. There are a variety of ways, techniques and methods to stimulate the brain. Begin with these tips.
.
10 Tips For A Better Memory
.
1. If you want to remember, slow down and pay attention to what you want to remember. The number one cause of memory problems is lack of focus.
.
2. Say out loud what you want to remember. Don't worry about people thinking you are strange for talking to yourself. Saying something out loud fires
more brain cells and helps in the memory process.
.
3. Get 30 minutes of physical exercise at least 5 days a week. This helps promote circulation to the brain and will benefit your heart as well.
.
4. Eat a portion-controlled, balanced diet.
.
5. Control your stress; worry less, laugh more.
.
6. Make sure to drink sufficient amounts of water each day.
.
7. Get sufficient amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. Your brain is approximately 60% fat and 40% water; fuel it with the right kind of fat. The easiest way to accomplish this is to eat fish 3 times per week.
.
8. Lighten up; everyone forgets from time to time. Accept that you cannot remember everything in this highly complex and fast-paced world.
.
9. Use visualization techniques if they work for you. The more outlandish the visualization, the higher the likelihood that you will remember.
.
10. To remember pass codes, license plate numbers, credit card numbers, telephone numbers, and/or important dates, create a story that links the individual letters or numbers together.

Loosing weight and effects of a thinner face

I have lost 30 pounds in the last 6 months and I am pretty well where I want to be.

I am quite happy with myself and do not look back or want it back.

However the weight loss seems more noticeable in my face and it has aged me.

Has anyone figured a remedy, short of plastic surgery and botock for the loose skin. Would moisturizing help.

What have other people done about it. I am sure other people are in the same situation. I know it can be a big secret, but it would really help others. Even discussing the surgery if any of you have gone through it. Thanks

Explanation for impaired glucose tolerance

Hi all

I've always been interested in the biochemical effects of the zone diet and its functionality as a de-facto calorie restriction (CR) diet. If you total up caloric intake from what's recommended by the zone calculator in terms of protein, carbohydrate, and fat blocks, the result is remarkably low. Normal people are recommended to eat in a range typically considered to be CR. As many of you may know CR diets in animals as closely related to humans as rhesus monkeys have been associated with increased longevity and reduced incidence of chronic disease with age.

There is a community of CR practitioners independent of any zone affiliation. Many of these people, in addition to reducing overall caloric intake, also reduce protein intake in an attempt to reduce levels of the protein insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). They see this as desirable because reduced levels have been associated with increased longevity in humans and animals.

However, apparently now many members of the community doing this have developed impaired glucose tolerance, a sign of pre-diabetes. Certain people have also complained of ills such as low libido, low testosterone, and reduced bone density.

Since zone is already regarded as "high-protein" in spite of the fact that protein only constitutes 40% of total calories, my guess is that these people are consuming truly low levels of protein in their diets, much lower than would be recommended under zone philosophy.

I was wondering if any more science oriented zoners out there might hazard a zone-inspired biochemical explanation of why certain low-protein consuming CR practitioners are experiencing these problems. What happens from a chronic inflammation and hormonal standpoint when people stick to a diet, for many years and with zealous discipline, which is comparably low calorie to the zone but much lower in protein? Also I assume that most of these people are aware of the concept of glycemic index and tailor their carbohydrate consumption accordingly.

Very dry skin on zone

Hi all, I've been on Zone diet now for two months and doing great. My blood sugar has stabilized and I've lost weight slow and steady.
But I've noticed my skin is very dry on arms, legs etc. Not itchy or blotchy just looks very dehydrated?..but I've been drinking eight glasses of water every day. I'm getting all of my carbs from fruit and veggies- I'm not doing flour or other grains because my insulin sensitivity is still touchy even in the right proportions. Any ideas why my skin is drier on this diet and do I need to add vitamin supplement?
Thanks

more info on fillers

I have los weight too and my cheekbones have deflated so i'm left with not lines but frown shadows arounf my mouth. So I' interetsed in learning more about fillers and which one might be best for me.

Here's recent pragraph written on fillers

"Another way to treat this is to use fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, or Juvaderm. Basically they act as "bulk" to fill certain areas and soften the lines. Results are temporary, 6 months to 12 months max. Repeated treatments may induce collagen formation and may create more permanent results over time. Price can be anywhere $500 to several thousand depending on the amount of product used."

Perhaps I'd be better off using botox

"Botox is used for wrinkles and lines a"ssociated with facial expression, like "crows feet", frown lines, or forehead lines. Again, this is temporary- 3 to 4 months. Expect $200 to $300 per area."

Do fillers and botox look fake? Please advice. Thanks.

Omega-3 and fat blocks

I notice the recommendation for the Omega-3 capsules is a dosage of 4 grams per day. That would work out, by my count, to about 2.5 fat blocks. Should that amount be subtracted from the rest of the diet, so that, essentially, you're eating 3-4 carb blocks, 3-4 protein blocks, and somewhat less than 3-4 fat blocks per meal? Or, if you take a dose with a meal, and are using the simplified divide-the-plate method, do you factor that in as your "fat" serving, and so don't add an extra serving of fat to the plate?
To Brad re: Goo

Hi Brad,

I'm replying here because I keep getting an error when I try to post in the Athletic forum.

Goos don't really fit into the Zone. You didn't mention the type of events/training in which you participate, but typically an athlete in the Zone has a Zone balanced meal for breakfast, followed by a Zone balanced snack just before the start of the event. If you're a runner, running less than 3 hours or so, you will usually only need to keep drinking water to stay hydrated (several members of my family run full marathons this way; it definitely works). If longer, such as a triathalon, you'd support your efforts with Zone balanced snacks at intervals throughout the event. Here's a related video in which Dr. Sears talks about the Zone diet for athletes: http://www.youtube.com/user/ZoneAdmin#p/a/f/2/VaMQqkj2hKE

_________________________________

sue
Consultant of Zone Labs
Certified Zone Affiliate

Lost 100 pounds 16 years ago and no longer have high blood pressure. My thanks to Dr. Sears for the Zone and Omega Rx!

Hair Loss Stopped by Zone Diet?
