Good morning all! Just realized it's Tuesday and I didn't remember to start a new weekly thread yesterday! I know we have some new posts and open questions on this thread, so I don't want to create a new one and have the recent posts "buried" on the prior thread. Let me know if you're having trouble posting/reading and if you think we should create a new thread today, or wait until next Monday. Welcome Carolyn and Tammy -- I still consider myself a newbie, and not experienced enough to comment on your Zone menus. I'm still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't for me :-) . I think it's a constant learning experience, which is a good thing -- keeps life interesting! There are so many experienced Zoners on this board, who give such great feedback -- I can't tell you what a help they've all been! Tammy -- for me, this thread was at first a place to come and be "accountable" to how I'm doing on the Zone program. That means posting my daily Zone Journal (link in my signature) of what and when I'm eating and tracking other factors that I know are important for my success (different for everyone, but I also track how much sleep I'm getting -- since I don't get enough, and it keeps me out of the Zone -- and how much caffeine I consume during the day -- since I am trying to cut back, although you'd never know it by looking at my Journal ;-) ... ). But I think the most important aspect of this thread is that this is a place where we're all really honest with ourselves and each other, and there are no judgments -- just a lot of really great constructive feedback and support :-) . Deborah -- WHOO HOO!!! 35 pounds in 13 weeks!!! What a pace you've got going! I'm SO happy for you! Work is crazy -- just finished a huge, stressful project (hence the lack of sleep), and at the end of it, all I kept thinking was how relieved I am that I got through it without going over my goal weight range. Stress is a HUGE factor for me in terms of overeating -- as happy and relieved as I am to have finished this project, I'd be feeling really bad about it if at the end I had a weight gain to deal with. That's something for me to "file away" in my brain for the next time I'm stressed about work and tempted to overeat -- how good it feels when the stress is over, and NOT to have a weight gain to deal with. Have a good day all! Laurie |

Hi Lorie! It's actually an Excel spreadsheet I put together, which has evolved to what works for me as I've been going along. I update it during the day. At the end of each day, I copy and paste the food journal portion into a Windows Live Space blog entry so that it can be accessed from the Zone forum. I repeat many of the same foods, so it's easy for me to copy/paste from prior days. Since it's Excel, it's also easy for me to enter the grams of protein, carbs and fat into the corresponding cell and divide by 9/7/3 to get the block equivalent. Sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is :-) ... I'd be happy to send you a blank copy of the spreadsheet if you would like to use it. If so, just send me your e-mail address (mine is Laurie2714@live.com).

Awww, you guys are all so sweet! My family has all recovered and everyone is back to full heath with the exception of a few coughs and sniffles here and there. Fortunately, I never did get it full force...I just kept taking Cold FX and my vitamins (including Fish Oil) and eating in the Zone and it worked!!! I did get mildly sick but never to the point I couldn't do my regular routine. LOVE the Zone!
In addition to the family being better I received the good news that all of Logan's test results came back clear. Even the vet was surprised and thrilled at his recovery. We just have to continue the liver support meds and the special diet and hopefully there will not be a relapse of any kind. Needless to say the whole family is ecstatic with this news! what a relief!
Welcome Carolyn, Tammy and Lorie
Bozena! Nice to see you on this thread!
Sue...LOVE the new Eli pic! So cute!
Laurie, well said about what this thread is all about. Another reason I love this thread is there are always so many recipe ideas listed here....it keeps the menu options fresh for me. Congratulations on getting thru the work project without any gain!! WTG girl!! thanks for re-posting the smoothie recipes.
Deborah, awesome 35 lbs lost!!! You are doing SO well on the Zone! I found fresh okra on the weekend...had to go into a bigger city for an appointment and was pleasantly surprised to find it there. So I made your Guiltless Gumbo recipe for lunch on Saturday. It was great!!! I had intended to freeze the second half to have at a later time but I enjoyed it so much on Sat that I had it again for lunch on Sunday. Wonderful recipe, thanks for sharing it with us
Janet....a poster by the name of Shannon in another thread listed a link to a Paleo recipe site that I thought you may be interested in. I know you aren't really doing the paleo right now (aka the rye bread purchase ;-) ) but thought you may like to have a look as the recipes are fantastic http://cfscceat.blogspot.com/. If I lived in California I would certainly be joining up for their Crossfit Gym...love their website!
Kathleen and Sharyn.....are you still with us? Please post if you are!

Laurie thanks for the offer I am grateful and will probably take you up on it later. I am having a hard time getting my brain to learn blocks now instead of Weight Watcher points. I did ww for years and lost a lot at first and then became increasingly hungry. I am going to make myself learn block sizes for a while so I don't get confused.
Carolyn that PB&J smoothie looks great. I will have to try that out on the kids this week. Have you ever added fish oil to it?
Janna I am glad you guys are feeling better. Say a prayer I think my kids are getting sick. Both are coughing, sneezing and cranky. |

Lorie – it was pretty good. I got the recipe from this thread. Just make sure you let it blend really good. I thought I did this morning and I had a few cottage cheese chunks left in there…..nothing I couldn’t just swallow but incase that kind of thing bothers you. I have not purchased the liquid fish oil yet, I will be doing that in the next few days.
I am still trying to get use to counting the blocks too. I don’t think I counted something correctly because at lunch time today I made sure to eat all my food, which was a lot, but it must not have been very zone balanced because a few hours later I was hungry and my blood sugar dropped (to 78) about 4 hours later (I am hypoglycemic)

Carolyn I am hypoglycemic too. I had a salad today and didn't have issues. The one I ate was the chef salad on the website and a week in the zone book. It had turkey, ham, cheese, and chickpeas along with the veggies. It was filling and lasted about 4 hours. I also took two tsp of fish oil after lunch which probably helped. My health food store had fish oil on sale last month it cost about $25 and seems to be pretty good quality. I am sure zone fish oil is the best quality but I can't afford that right now.

Hi Lorie -- I also did Weight Watchers MANY times. I was able to lose weight, but it was SUCH a struggle -- I was always fighting cravings! I now realize this was because I wasn't balancing my protein and carbs -- I was eating WAY too many carbs and they were all unfavorable (sugar-free desserts, etc.). Then, when I tried Atkins or South Beach (both low-carb), I found I had much less hunger/cravings (my first clue that carbs are the issue for me) -- but it was very difficult to sustain for the long-term with such limited carbs.
On the Zone, it now seems so "easy" -- the variety is great, and (as long as I keep P/C/F in balance) I have no cravings at all -- in fact have strong resistance, which has been really tested this week with all the Halloween candy around! But after so many years of thinking in terms of "Points", I still find myself referring to, for example, 1 1/2 oz of deli turkey as "1 Point" instead of "1 Block" of protein :-) .

Hey, all! Laurie thanks for the link to paleo recipes, though I have strayed into neolithic times.....and last night....well, I had my annual dinner for my book club (my turn to host) in which we cook, eat, drink and generally overdo it. I made a fabulous chicken soup with curry spices and cream,(not so much) and a pear and beet salad over greens, and I baked from scratch, a glutenfree, sugarfree chocolate cake for dessert. (agave and maple syrup sweetened).....it was all great, but dare I say it wasn't zone balanced? So today I am regretful about eating that cake, but, moving along, I am motivated to eat well today.... Oh, and enjoyed a Nia dance workout yesterday...this could really be my thing, guys!! An exercize that I like! |

Laurie I agree the zone is so much easier. I truly need the extra protein to keep my BS stable. Honestly I am rarely hungry so it is easier to forgo massive carb cravings. I struggle with popcorn. The smell of it popping gets to me. My husband has it every night for a bedtime snack and so far that has been the hardest to deal with. Last night I had two cups with a cheese stick instead of an apple. I feel pretty good today, no hangover. I have lost a pound since Monday. Here is what I am eating today. B- Big Brain Shake L- Chicken Stirfry leftovers from Monday Night
D- Chicken baked in Dry Spagetti seasoning with petite diced tomatoes topped w/ mozz cheese, Broccoli, salad
I am a Homemade Gourmet Consultant and I am preparing samples to serve at an event Friday and Saturday. Some I think would be Zone friendly, others like Orange Cranberry Bread Pudding and Rasberry Fruit dip would be way too many carbs. The veggie dips are probably OK. Most are made with cream cheese and/or sour cream. Are they considered protien or fat? I really need to figure out how to eat HG mixes in the zone.
Janet what is a Nia Dance?

I've been doing the Zone since early August of this year... so about 11 weeks now. Lost 12 pounds, and generally feel so much better and healthy. I also started going back to the gym and walking regularly almost 2 weeks ago. I'm 40 years old and want to still be an active, healthy person when I reture, thus the commitment to these lifestyle changes. One thing I love about the Zone so much is that I've had almost no cravings or crazy hunger moments for almost 2 months. I'm not sure what's changed this week... maybe the exercise? But I'm experiencing cravings again, even right after I eat. And I'm having trouble staying "in the Zone", even with the exact same meals I've been having for 2 months. I've given into the cravings a couple of times, but not to the degree that I used to; and I get right back on track with the next meal. I figured I'd try to stay on track with folks here in accountability. So, here I am! B: 2 block strawberry, protein powder, soy milk, almond butter smoothie S: 1/4 c. cottage cheese, applesauce, 1 macadamia nut L: coleslaw (Sue's recipe modified for my block needs), 2.5 blocks tuna, 1/2 oz cheese S: 1 oz low fat cheese, 1 mac nut, 1 plum D: ?? - probably leftover shrimp marinara from adoctorskitchen.com S: almost always chicken pepperoni stick and half apple |

Lorie, Nia is a dance workout with music and very freeform movements, everyone moving as their own body guides them, but following an instructor loosely...it is formulated so that all muscle groups get used throughout the hour, o( or something...I'm wingin it) if you google it you will be offered some you-tube videos of it. I like it! |

Janet that sounds cool, like something you could get lost in. I will look it up. I am having to take everything slowly now. I have scoliosis and I am seriously out of shape. It is real easy for me to move wrong and injure myself. I have a great Physical Therapist that I am working with to help me get flexible and strong so I can be more active and not worry about getting hurt.
Chicken for dinner isn't going to happen tonight. I am going to feed the family leftovers and I will have a chef salad. :-) |

It has been crazy busy for me, and then my computer crashed at home, so I have not had access. But, hanging in there.
The page did take a long time to load again, so maybe this thread is getting long. But, don't change it just for me, I may not be able to get logged in again for a while.

Today was a better day for me. I decided to add an extra 1 block snack to help cope with my hunger and cravings. The cravings were much better, though I still had some hunger. But psychologically, giving myself permission to add a snack helped keep from eating things that I would really regret. B: 2 block smoothie, 1/4 c cottage cheese with applesauce, and a mac nut S: 1/2 Zone bar L: veg soup, 2 tofu weiners, peach, 1 oz cheese, 2 nuts S: plum, 1 oz cheese D: sauteed mushrooms/onions, chicken sausage S: yet to come! |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil
- Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
- Absorption – remove heavy metals
- Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
