I had a mini-success story today! Usually I go to the gym after work. I generally have 1/2 a Zone bar before my workout as my snack. Well for some reason, today I forgot it. The gym I go to is next to a grocery store. I didn't want to skip my snack, so I went to the grocery store to see what I could scrounge up for a snack. I wandered around looking at the protein bars and realized they were all too far one way or the other, none were balanced. So I went to the deli and found a treasure trove! They actually had some healthy options. They had cheese and fruit cups, with little cubes of cheese with grapes and melons. But they also had little packets with 2 hardboiled eggs! Perfect. So then I went to the pre-packaged fruit section, where they have already cut up watermelon and pineapple, and there it was. A perfect little tub of mixed berries. All 4 kinds too. It was just about a cup's worth. So there I was with my perfect Zone snack. I needed some nuts anyway, so I grabbed a little bag of Macadamia nuts too. Then for dinner I had chicken breast, carrots, black beans, and cherries, and some more Macadamia nuts. All sort of ala carte. I basically scavenged the kitchen for Zone stuff and went upstairs to eat in peace. The family was giving me a hard time! |

| Hi everyone! I can't believe how much has been written since I last wrote on 6/25 - I'm sorry I don't have enough time to catch up on all of it now, but I told myself I would write something before I turned in. Just a brief catch-up & Sue thanks for your encouraging words - I really need it! After the 203 weigh-in on 6/25 I has a 202.5 and 202 the next two days. Last Friday we went on a day trip to see my parents in Quincy, IL, and my mom went unconscious at lunch from some pain meds she tooked for an abscessed tooth - she's okay now - but for whatever reason it exhausted me and I was pretty worthless the next coupld days - then I had my Bach Society Annual Meeting on Monday night - it's a really really nice party for the choir I sing in & then of course was wiped out on Tuesday; Wednesday I spent the day just trying to catch up on house & yard work, & today I took my daughter to a college tour & viola lesson in between making meals & taking care of Alex & then I was too wiped out again to do much of anything else this evening. Pretty much staying on target with health meals, but the exercise has been lacking lately - also Alex flooded the bathroom again with one of his nightly baths & my scale stopped working again, but I think this time for good - I may get a new scale tomorrow - I really need to watch my weight! Good night all - or should I say Good Morning! |

| You'll do fine Chris. A tip, focus on the Zone favorable foods in the house and skip the egg yolks, beef, pork and butter, also the bread and other grain based foods. If you don't have any Zone friendly foods, you can pick up a few of your favorites ,plus a few staples like oil and protein powder oil to have on hand. No worries! Have a great weekend! |

Chris, did I ever mention to you that I had chatted with another zoner a few years back who was using delivered meals like yours? She would post and share her meals every day, and they sounded as delicious as yours! Of the ones that were her favorites, she was taking notes of the ingredients, so that she could assemble those meals herself, once she stopped the delivery. I believe that she only took the meals for a month, that was all she could afford, so she wanted to be able to eat the same after the meals were done. Yummy--country ham! I just love that stuff, reminds me of when I would visit relatives that had a farm in Kentucky. There was a very distinctive smell in the kitchen when my aunt was cooking breakfast--delicious! So, I am having an oatmeal breakfast, then finish packing and then we are off to go camping! |

Hi Becky! Hi, Lesley! Your food choices look great...but as you said, you skipped snack...(something I never do! love my snacks) CC, have fun! Barbara, hang in there! Christina, I, too, got talked into sushi.....!!! And then, wine, later, at my poetry group, with no cheese to balance it! Weight was up a pound this morning, but it was down a pound yesterday. On the good side, I walked a lot ..... will go a bit stricter today! No wine....lots of berries. And lots of veggies. |

Thanks for reviewing things for me Janet! I think the snack eating is the missing link for me! I will have to be very conscious of that! I am going on my Wii fit later today and taking the dog for a walk.. I do love my wii fit!! I am fortunate to have a high-end treadmill in my basement as well...I am going to start back on it. I hurt my hip a while back but after a lot of physio!! I am good to start again. I am going to check in later! Have a great afternoon! |

Hi Lesley!
Good news, bad news. The bad, it looks like you're probably not eating enough; the good, you get to eat more!
If your breakfast contained around 3/4 cup cottage cheese, 3 cups of strawberries (a lot!) and at least 9 almonds, it would be a Zone balanced meal.
Lunch is more like a snack the, a snack that needs carb added (1 cup cucumber provides about 1/4 the amount of carb you'd need for a Zone snack. The carb lettuce is minimal, too. No, nuts don’t substitute for protein.
The L. Cow snack will work if you double the amount of cheese, but veggies or fruit would be better for the Zone than than Ryvita.
If the plum is part of dinner, it looks like a much better Zone balanced meal, as long as you had a substantial piece of salmon there.
Some tips. With the plate method your plate literally has to be overflowing. Also make sure to keep adding a dash of monounsaturated fat to every meal and snack. If you don't eat enough you will probably see the scales go down at first, but you'll soon plateau and have no further stored fat loss, as you body begins to perceive starvation and slows down to conserve energy (aka slows down by using fewer calories because it's trying to hold onto the fat it still has, thinking it's going to need it to survive). Eat freely of the Zone favorable foods, within the parameters of the plate method (or whichever Zone method you choose), and you'll have the best results.
Glad you recovered well from your hip injury. Remember that you don't need to overdo it with exercise to be successful in the Zone.

This is the help I know I need to be successful...so a huge thanks! I have tried the Zone a number of times and feel great, but don't seem to lose any weight and I have about 60 pounds to lose. (I DID lose 60 lbs about 7 years ago on the Zone...but it has crept back on...ARGH!) So maybe, I am not eating enough?? You see... I just logged back on here becasue I am feeling a bit of a pang...and I am trying to figure out if it is an emotional need to eat or real hunger... When I was successful with the Zone before, I didn't use the plate method..I used the blocks...but I feel I have lost my touch with trying to figure out the blocks... Truthfully, I haven't gotten on the scales because it is a big downer for me....I am trying... I know this is the accountability thread...(I need that too!!) but I guess for whatever reason, I still feel like I need to learn a lot. I think it will work for me if I put my meals down here and until I get the hang of it...maybe people could jump in and help me out? Would that be okay? Lesley |

Lesley, you're making great progress! Don't be afraid to get on the scale...if you don't you'll always wonder what your starting point was. When I started the Zone I used my regular bathroom scale, then about 2 months in I got Wii Fit and it weighed about 5 lbs heavier....it was so frustrating working off those lbs I thought I had already lost!! But they are gone now and I only go by the Wii Fit scale now.
Becky.....great finds at a convenience store! Wow...sounds better than my grocery store! WTG
Yesterday... pre-workout snack: 1/4c nf plain yogurt, 1/2tsp macadamia butter workout: 15min abs, 2miles HIIT breakfast: egg white omelette with 1/4c salsa and 1oz nf cheese, green smoothie lunch: snack: 1/2c nf yogurt, 1tsp macadamia butter dinner: taco salad (3oz ground turkey, 1/4c black beans, 1/2c salsa, black olives over romaine) snack: light baby bell cheese, popcorn
today: snack: 1/4c nf yogurt, 1/2tsp macadamia workout: 3.55 miles on treadmill breakfast: Janet's smoothie (modified with peaches and down to 2.5 blocks) lunch: greek salad with 1 link turkey sausage sliced over, 1/2 serving crocodile mousse with blueberries
not sure about the rest of the day yet...

| Thanks for your support! I will go on my wii fit tonight...but I think I will use the wii fit scale tomorrow morning when I use it again. Are you walking or jogging on your treadmill...how long does it take you to go 3.55 miles? Just wondering...I am starting back after a hip injury - going to have to go slow...walking for 15 minutes I think to start...sure don't want a re-injury! |

I love the Wii Fit! I weigh in on it every morning.
I walk, jog, run, do HIIT....it just depends on the day and my mood, how much strength work I'm going to do that day...and how much I'm sore from the day before! LOL!!! Starting slowly is a good idea...I've taken breaks from exercise in the past and I always start back slowly so I don't get too sore or get any injuries...my knees can act up if I put too much stress on them.
The 3.55 miles that I did today was a combo of brisk walk, speed walk and jog intervals. It took me 45 minutes. I have other days that I go faster (run) and others again that I just do a brisk walk. I usually go on the treadmill for 20-50 minutes each day.
Good luck!!

Hey Jana, My thighs are still sore, I just removed the squats for now and will focus on those once a week, or twice until I build some endurance. How many blocks is that Taco salad? CC I really can't recreate the meals, because they contain special sauces, so that would be difficult. On the other hand, the simpler meals that don't have sauces won't be a problem. I know I just talked into a complete circle...lol. It has been a long day. Sue K, a question. Did you say that the WW bread I use on occasion doesn't allow me to count the protein in it? I thought I remember you saying that. Could you please let me know? Thanks <img src='http://www.zonediet.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> |

| Right Chris, do not count the P in plant foods, with the exception of soy (grains are plant foods). A tip, using blocks is usually much easier than trying to cont P, C and F in everything. |

Hi Everyone - Well I got my new scale today - I don't have a morning weight but my before bed weight is 202 so that's probably a good sign - hopefully I'll be less when I get up tomorrow!
Br: 2 Slices Turkey Bacon, 1 large slice of tomato, on 1 slice of Nature's Pride Double Fiber Bread & a tiny bit of Miracle Whip Light on Bread
Early Lunch: The same thing! Not much imagination here!
Coming Home from the Grocery Store: One Serving (11 Chips) of Garden Salsa Sun Chips that my daughter bought & she opened in the car & was snacking so I started in on them too. I wanted more but made myself stop at 1 serving.
Dinner: Skinless Chicken Leg/Thigh, 1 Corn-on-the-cob, about 1/3rd cup of Baked Beans, 1 Glass of Rum & Coke
Snack/Dessert (about 1-1/2 Hrs after Dinner): About 1 1/2 cups of Watermelon
Late Night: Snacked on some Pretzel Rods that I bought in a moment of weakness at the grocery store today
Exercise today was mowing most of my front yard (about a 1/2 acre) and trimming my hedges - in all about 2 1/2 hours of yard work.
Okay so now I'm feeling REALLY guilty, but I wanted to be honest about all my cheats today even though I am still not sure how bad they are since I don't exactly know what I'm doing yet!
Hopefully I will make tomorrow a better day - Good night all! |

Hi Christina!
A few tips, you're a bit over on the C, most likely a little under on the F, and remember to keep unfavorable carb (the bread in this meal) to no more than 25% of all the C in you meall according to Zone rules. You can accomplish this easily by adding more oil or some nuts, eating only 1/3 to 1/2 of the slice of bread, and increasing one of the veggies or the berries.
Have a great 4th! |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.
8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil
- Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
- Absorption – remove heavy metals
- Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
A serving of canned tuna has 12 times less omega-3’s than
