Hello,
I am starting the Zone tomorrow and have a few questions.
Is purchasing low carb bread/tortilla a no no?
Sugar Free jelly OK?
How about Jello or FF/SF pudding?
I found some conflicting info about artificial sweetners. Are they allowed? I noticed that someone said no, then another person posted Setiva (sp) as being ok and not Splenda?
Is eating all the veggies required? 1 carb block for broccoli is 4 cups. I love my broccoli, but I don’t think I can’t eat all 12 cups.

Good questions!

First of all, there is nothing that is banned in the Zone. It is just that we eat the "unfavorable" foods in condiment portions.

Low carb bread or tortillas are still considered unfavorable, so if you use them, just limit them to no more than 25% of the total carb in your meal. That is the zone recommendation.

You can use artificial sweeteners, but keep in mind that they may stimulate your hunger and cause you to crave more. Sears has been known to favor the use of splenda, and I think a lot of zoners prefer stevia because it isn't "artificial" (it is a naturally occuring sweetener). So, if you eat that sugar free jello, try to find one with splenda (I don't eat it, so I don't know if it comes that way or not). Or you could go through the trouble of making your own from Knox unflavored gelatin, and then you could use the splenda or stevia.

Sears maintains that the diet should be heavy in vegetables, moderate in fruits, and limited in starches. The more color to your meal, the better. You are not limited to broccoli, there are lots of other choices available. You can choose from a variety of veggies on the food list.

Hi -

My approach - and I hope it works out - has been to mix up my carb blocks. For example, I might have a cup of broc., a green salad (big!) and if need be, some apple. It works out to my 3 blocks of carbs but I am not ODing on any one thing. I have been using a minimal amount of whole grain bread, never more than one piece a day, so that helps use up some of the carb allowance. The fats and proteins are always so much easier!

I think moderation is key. In order for this to be something I live with vs. a diet, I will allow myself a small portion of healthy pasta (high protein w/the omegas, or dreamfields), or 1/2 of a sweet potato. Last night I used 1/2 of a ff butterscotch pudding as my carb, but it was the only unfavorable one I had all day, and compared to my old habits of pigging out on cookies and brownies, I think it's okay. I'm not a big fan of artificial sweeteners. They just seem so unhealthy to me. I'd rather have 1/2 tsp. real sugar or nothing.

Thanks for the insight!
I have one more question.
I am seeing a fat contradiction between the information posted online and what is listed in the book.
Per the book I have it states that 3g of fat = 1 zone block. Online it states 1.5g = 1 zone block.
Which do we follow?

If you use the block system, then use 1.5 grams as your guide. The block ssytem takes into account that the other 1.5 grams of fat is hidden in your protein. Therefore, if you eat a fat free protein, then you would double your fat block, so that you are eating the missing fat.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
