Hi Everyone! My subject line is my frustration! I have been spending the last two days reading all I can about the Zone way of eating and I am seriously ready to embark on this new adventure. I have just been to my doctor and my thyroid med had to be increased (I take Levoxyl - now 100 mg) My cholesterol is 235 my weigh is up nearly 10 more lbs (I am over 200) and I am very depressed. Of course on top of feeling so crappy I have hot flashes. So, I know hormones of all degrees are a wreck in my body. I have been encouraged by the before and after pix and testimonials of those here. I have a few questions if I may ask to those out there with the similar health issues: - How long did it take before you started feeling better and had alittle more energy? I have a problem with being depressed and lethargic and part I believe is from thyroid but also because I am overweight and need to exercise. I have nearly 80 lbs to lose. That being said when one is mentally feeling as I do, it is hard to get motivated. The increase in thyroid med will take another month to take effect I am told. -I am wrestling with whether to start HRT because of the hot flashes/sweats. I have been taking natural supplements but they are at best keeping it at bay as long as I do not forget to take them. If getting all the hormones working properly with Zone eating would be the answer I sure would rather do that then take meds. I also take a water pill for high BP that is really more borderline high. Dr. wants to keep it down. Any getting started suggestions would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help! |

Welcome, Debbie! Good job in doing your homework before embarking upon a new way of eating and enjoying life! This forum is absolutely wonderful! It's the best place to ask questions, get answers and share your experience. I know I spent hours and hours reading threads - very helpful. I suggest clicking on "not read" at the top on the left hand side. Even if a topic doesn't look like it relates to you, there is good information in those threads. Also, even if a thread is months old, it contains valuable information. I have hypothyroidism and am going thru menopause myself. I have several medical problems, which you can read about in my previous posts, and I must say I haven't felt this good in over 1.5 years. Wednesday will mark the end of my fourth week being in the Zone. Although each person is different, I felt better immediately after completing just one day. My body was very toxic from the dense starches I was eating previously. Also, I haven't had a hot flash in about three weeks now. YEA! I feel better both internally and mentally - very alert. As far as depression goes, although I've never dealt with depression personally, I can only think this diet will help by getting rid of all the toxins in your body. Have you gotten a book yet? I highly recommend the Anti-Inflammation Zone book (AIZ). It's a very easy read in understanding everything (I had trouble understanding Enter the Zone). AIZ gives carbs a point value, which I found extremely helpful in making wiser choices. But you can still use the plate method, too. I know Sue highly recommends Toxic Fat. You might want to check with your local library to see if they carry them to see which you like better. Debbie, I'm sorry I can't be of more help in answering your questions; however, please know this, I can't recommend the Zone highly enough. It has been a real godsend to me. Happy Zoning! Karen |

Hey there, Sorry to hear your med has to be increased! It's a hard feeling to be 10 pounds heavier in a short time. But, hopefully once you hit the right med level, you'll regain your old energy. (I hit 192 myself, but lost 51 lbs, am down to 140, and looking to lose the last 10 lbs...) Just a couple of things I wanna say ... 1) I have mild hypothyroid, and Sue's advice re: the new standards for measuring whether one has hypothyroid or not is right on. Clinically speaking, according to the old standards, I did *not* have hypothyroid. BUT, I showed Sue's information about the new standards to my doctor, and she put me on thyroid med anyway, and I felt so much better in a short time. The tiredness was definitely NOT psychological...I did have a lot of stress in my life, but it wasn't why I found it difficult to move, so sapped of energy. The lack of energy didn't waver, as it would if it was psychological; it was a steady and consistent level, at all times, no matter what; and I could barely walk the short distance to the beach at that time, etc. Now I'm full of energy when I'm zoned, and even when I'm not zoned sometimes...!!! It was actually Sue's information that helped me to get out of this funk. I owe her one! 2) How quickly you'll get into the zone: it can take as long/short (however you look at it) as four or maybe five days to get fully and completely into the zone, I think. When I start zoning again after not zoning for a while, though, I start feeling the extra energy after a day or two, but it takes time sometimes for me to go fully into the right insulin levels and get the full benefits. 3) The zone can be very good for hot flashes when you're fully zoned. I don't know if it completely gets rid of them, but it definitely is an HUGE help in controlling them. 4) Are you using "black cohosh," a natural remedy that can be used instead of HRT? Now, I don't know a huge lot about this, but I use other natural remedies and they help me enormously. For example, both the zone diet and quercetin (a natural remedy) helps me control my allergic reactions. Feels like the zone diet plus "black cohosh" would work together well possibly. 5) Your chol. will drop naturally to normal (usually) with the zone diet. I think you knew that already though? 6) You talked about when your energy would return. You don't have to wait until you return to the right weight to regain your energy. I was 60 lbs overweight and had more energy than my other two (thin!) sisters because I was on the zone diet plus thyroid medicine, and they were on the thyroid med, but NOT on the zone diet. In fact I had an huge amount of energy despite my extra weight!!! When I first went on the thyroid med, It didn't take me more than several days to start feeling the extra energy. Hope this helps!! I know how it feels ... Sue lost 100 lbs in two years' time I believe ... via the zone diet ... there's hope! Alexy |

Hi Debbie!
I'm post menopausal and have hypothyroidism. I take almost the same Levoxyl dose as you (75 and 100 on alternating days).
You will begin feelingdifferences from the Zone diet within days of starting it. I've been doing the Zone for 14 years. I lost 100 lbs during th first 2. My high BP lowered with the addition of Omega Rx by Zone Labs, to the point that my doc took me of the 2 high BP meds I was taking (all within 2 weeks of beginning Omega Rx!). My BP now is usually around 107/70 (it was in the 160's over 95 even while taking the 2 high BP meds). I'd tried 3 other brands of fish oil prior to taking Omega Rx, but none of them had lowered my high BP.
I began menopause about 6 1/2 yrs ago (8 yrs after I started the Zone diet) and I have neven had a hot flash to this day. I honestly don't even know what they feel like. I credit the Zone and fish oil for that.
To get started:
1. Got to Quick Start Guide (link at right)
2. Read "Toxic Fat"
I'll be gald to help if you have qns. (I may not get back to you for a few days because I'm on vacation at the moment.)
Happy new Year! |

Thanks, Karen for your post. I am encouraged when I hear people with hypoT are feeling better and the Hot Flashes improved. I have read from other sources how important diet is with hormones working or not working properly and this way of eating just makes sense! I have the book One Week in the Zone. I will be taking a trip to the library to check out AIZ and Toxic Fat. Deb |

Hi Alexy - I need to see those new standards as I was diagnosed (after twisting my health professional's arm to give me the test due to other symptoms like hair falling out and eyebrows diminishing. I have since changed drs.) and had a TSH of 11. I had been thin and active all my life but once I entered my 40's things changed. I have been down to 1.8 or 2 and I am now 3 TSH. I have always felt like I was on the fence, as far as feeling better, probably because I was not only dealing with the thyroid but pre-menopause and was never told that all these hormones need to work together and diet is a very important factor. I can't believe how many women have thyroid problems! Now I am in menapause or post whatever, it is even more important to get a handle with these hormones for my sanity as well as my body<img src='http://www.zonediet.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/sick.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Sick' align='absmiddle'> and my poor husband!!!! I was taking an herbal remedy that has black cohash in it with other things. It is proprietary blend and it helped for awhile but then not as much. Maybe because other things were going on. Now that my med was increased I will have to see if it will be more helpful now. I need the chol to come down as I am also having enzyme changes with my liver function according to the blood tests. All related to the weight I was told. I refuse to go on Chol med. That really messes with your liver. Yes I understand Chol will adjust once I am zoning so I am going to give it a month before the next blood test and see what happens. Awesome you lost 51 and Sue 100 - just awesome! |

Hi Sue - I saw your pix and WOW I was really encouraged. Yes I will need to get to the library and check out those books. Believe me, thank the good Lord you do not experience flashes as they are just awful - especially in the summer. Now that it is cold, much easier to deal with but annoying. I will start with the quick start as well. Thanks and hope you have a wonderful vacation Deb |

Your welcome, Deb! You are so right when you say this way of eating just makes sense! It does! It's all healthy food and balanced proportions. I went on a gluten-free diet 3 yrs ago and started off eating pretty much the same food as what is on the Zone. However, I wasn't eating healthy because my proportions and timing of meals were way off. I had good results (until I started eating GF baked goods, pasta, etc.), but I didn't FEEL good like I do now. I wish you well, Deb. Keep us posted on how you are doing! Happy Zoning! Karen |

Hi Debbie I am going through menopause. I started doing the Zone about 2 months ago. I had done it a few years ago then stopped but have now come to my senses!. Come to think of it my hot flushes have decreased dramatically. I have just put 2 and 2 together reading the others posts on this! Maybe the Zone and the fish oil have decreased some of the effects of my menopause. Wish I had started the Zone earlier. I know what you mean about the depression and the other things. They are pretty awful. One of my friends said to me - "there is a light at the end of the tunnel" - and she was right. Menopause seems like it is going to last forever but it doesnt. I agree with Sue - the fish oil will help. My aches and pains went away. I would NOT take HRT. There are some very bad side effects. Start doing the Zone, take the fish oil and supplements and I know you will see a difference quite soon. Good luck with it and please keep up posted! Ask lots of questions if you get stuck. Thanks for the compliments re: my weight. Yes, it feels good to have the weight off! Re: the new standards, I took a quick look but don't seem able to see the information I need. I do know it's an important organization of thyroid issues that came up with the new standards, in the USA. Give me a day or two and I'll find the information. Or maybe someone else will remember and put in here. Thanks, Alexy |

Hi All... I am new to The Zone so am reading just about every thread.I dont think I am hypothyroid but am post menopausal, take too many meds. Take two for HBP, stopped HRT after about 14 years - didnt have hot flashes for all those years - but luckily(LOL) I sure have them now. I also have Diabetes II, take Lyrica for neuropathy in my legs and now have some arthritis issues in a knee on one leg and an ankle on the other. I have a skin problem and have been on prednisone... that sure helps NOT with losing weight. Oh yes I have mega lbs. to lose. I am taking a supplement from the chiropractor but just ran out. If you take the OmegaRX from the Zone Labs, which I see people take and recommend, would I have to decrease my high cholesterol meds.. or at least watch? I am just a big mess and it seems at least once a year I get another ailment.. trust me I am not a hypochondriac... these are all real. But each doctor you have to see adds meds. I went to an endocrinologist so I could get rid of some of the meds but she just gave me more. I will welcome any advice you have. Bags |

Hi Bags, Keep your meds the same as you begin taking Omega RX. Always discuss medication and dosage decisions with your doctor before making changes to them. Remember to take the amount of fish oil you actually require keeping your conditions in mind. If you don't take the right amount you won't see results. You'd probaly require a daily dose of about 1T (12 caps) or more. The Zone phone reps sould be able to help you with dosing info. |

Thanks again Sue. I have a blood test the end of this month and see my pcp Feb.2 and the endocrinologist in March. I will wait til my blood test or if my blood sugars get too low, I will call one of them. It is quite confusing to start this when you have so much baggage so to speak. But I am doing it NOW. I have lots of projects I am working on but this has to be my top priority. I am sure once I get it organized it will be easy to follow. Thanks for being here and being so prompt with the replies. I am surprised more former SBDers arent here. Or are they? Has this forum been here for a while? til later Bags |

You're welcome Bags!
You're right about it being easy. Once you know the basics you can do the Zone just about anywhere; at home, at work, parties, vacations, etc. It's been a freeing experience for me to finally know how to eat to feel great and keep the weight off. And the simplicity of it had been a huge plus to me.
These forums have been around since, um, I think 1995. They used to be on Barry Sears' other website, drsears.com
I think you'll like it here Bags! It a nice community of knowledgeable, friendly, helpful people. |

Welcome, Bags! I wish you the best in your new endeavor. No time like the present to get started! Sounds like you have had some experience with choosing the lower glycemic-load foods by doing South Beach, so this should not be too much different, just as easy as making sure you have adequate protein and fat. Fish oil is another cornerstone, and exercise will be helpful (although not necessarily required, some people do fine without changing their activity levels at all). |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
