| I only recently became aware of this new idea of calorie restriction. I have no interest in doing it. Then I got to thinking, only eating 1100 calores a day is pretty severe in mainstream thinking. Am I in a anti-aging diet without intentionally doing so? Or are their calories even more restricted than that? |

| My question is really if the Zone qualifies for a calorie restrictive diet, like the ones for anti-aging. I saw a show about it on Oprah and was looking into it a bit. The couple they showed were extemely thin in my opinion. |

Yes, it is considered an anti-aging diet. However, you don't HAVE to look like that couple! You really have to keep track of your bodyfat% and if you are falling to low, then just eat more mono-unsaturated fat to pick up some bodyfat. Then, you will be right where you should! |

Fortunately I have zoned before. And I'm not hungry. Otherwise I would jump right off the program. When I saw that program and researched it a little I said there was no way I would do that. It didn't seem right to me for some reason. Now here I am doing it....but my guess is that the zone isn't as severe. I know they interviewed a guy and he was saying it was difficult. I don't find the zone to be difficult. It does require more food prep and a bit of measuring in the beginning though. Not to worry about getting too thin. I have some weight to lose before we can worry about that, lol. Interesting, if you shop around a bit you can find a website that will tell you that your weight is within range. I know for a fact mine is not, by a long shot. Yet I found two sites that said that 5'4' at 147 was within a "normal" range. Plus I have a tiny frame. In my 30's I weighed 118 to 120. I felt this was a good weight for my frame. I don't know if I should expect that now at 51yrs? I guess I just let the zone decide....unless I drop to the point I feel is unhealthy. According to Dr. Oz (who I question seriously sometimes!Really, did you see the show where he told twin teenagers not to worry about drinking water? Just drink liquid, the body doesn't know the difference. Dear me. He determined this by testing their skin!) anyway, according to him, I need to loose 5 inches off my waist. I would say that is a fair assessment. O.K. done rambling. Thanks for the info. |

Hi Texas T.! To find out what you can expect in regard to weight, divide your current LBM by 0.80 and then divide your LBM by 0.78. The results will be your weight range at 20 to 22% body fat. Even at 51 years old you can expect to weigh that if you stick with the Zone. I'm 56, and I'm remaining at my ideal body fat % with the Zone. I've been eating this way for about 13 1/2 years. Was that you who recently posted you'd done the Zone about 10 years ago (or maybe that was another Teresa)? Glad to hear you're doing well! |

Yes, I posted that. Years ago we went on it. When it first came out. I looked very healthy. Felt great. A bit hungry at times back then. Not so now. Having trouble sticking to a lifestyle change. I am 1/2 healthnut, 1/4 lazy and 1/4 into some naughty carbs. Wish me luck this go around. I need to stay with it. I take no prescriptions at this time and I want to keep it that way! I need to get serious about it now. No one can bypass aging, it is a fact of life.........but we can do things to increase our chances of aging well. I do not want to be like so many people we know. They need a special carrying case for all their meds. My gosh, the pills they take. So many lined up on the bathroom counter. My Mom went on it back then also, and two sisters. Mom has yo yo dieted with Atkins, master cleanse( I know, not a diet but that is exactly what she used it for, several times) and the like. She just got off Adkins... complaining she gained weight. I asked her why she just didin't go back to the zone. She lost the weight she was told to by the Dr. Her blood pressure normalized, relieving her of medications, her digestive tract normalized, relieving her of whatever pill you take for that.... Jesh, what more proof do ya need? She is considering it but is bucking the new restrictions on egg yolks/bread/etc. And she said she doesn't want to count grapes. I told her about the plate method. Boy, you have been in the zone for a long time. Impressive. |

Hi! Yes, I'm a long time zoner. I'm so gald I learned about it all those years ago! You just described most all of us (lazy, naughty, etc.) lol! It's all about choices. You've got a great mindset. Stick with it and you'll succeed. Who knows, maybe your success will inspire your mom and sisters to start again too. My mom keeps coming back to the Zone. As for your mom and the egg yolk, bread, etc. They are treated the same as they were in the past. Avoiding them is best, but a little here and there can be worked in; everything in moderation. Grapes, I don't blame her! I've never counted the number of grapes I take! :) When you've been eating in the Zone for a while you get to know how much to take of certain foods by sight. In fact, when I lost my 100 pounds I did it mostly with the plate method. Keep us updated! |

O.K. Sue, I did the math. I think...
I have a LBM of 106.26. My range came out to 133lbs to 142lbs. Now, the lazy side of me is loving this cause if I went to the 142, well heck... I am a mere 5 lbs from goal. However, the healthnut side knows for a fact that even the 133 is pushing it high. My frame is very small. We'll see what my body decides in a few months. But thanks so much for the info.... Oh, and don't be afraid to tell me I didn't do it right, math is not my strong suit.
I also had a body fat of 26.72. just a bit off ideal. 4 points roughly. I also find this a bit strange. I must confess, right here on this public site no less, that I have got fat (cellulite) everywhere! My legs are riddled with it right down to my ankles. We won't even get into my rearend! |

Hi! The good news, I get a range of 132 to 136 for you. (106/0.8 = 132.5; 106/0.78 = 136.23). You can easily lose 10 to 15 pounds of fat and be at ideal body fat. The even better news, the closer to your ideal weight you are, usually the bigger the difference in how you look when you lose even 5 pounds of fat. At your current weight of 147, on your 5' 4" frame, a 10 to 15 pound fat loss will most likely make a big difference in the way you look. It'll put you into 1 or 2 pants sized smaller, depending upon how tight your pants are that you wear now. You'll see. The last fat to go is usually the fat that's on the place you tend to gain it first. In my case, it was the tummy. |

This is true. Weight shows up on me pretty easily. In just the four days in the zone my waist has gone down 3/4 inch. I am determined to get it down below the heart disease measurement I have now!
Even better news. Oh my gosh, this ricotta cheese with fruit recipe is to die for. I would relish this outside the zone! I will serve it to guests layered in pretty glasses and they will not know they are in the zone! |

| This is so encouraging to read. I just weighed myself this evening and I'm 159.4. According to this calculation, I just need to get to 150-153.8 and I'll be at what I should be? I might be having a real happy birthday in October:!! I've yet to reach a weight loss goal by my birthday and now, I see it can be in site. :) And I'm not even doing this Zoneing yet. |

**ANTI-AGING AND CALORIE RESTRICTION** I am hugely interested in calorie restriction, with the Zone. I believe as Dr. Sears explains in "Anti Aging Zone" that the Zone diet is super for those who want the calorie restriction benefits. I reseached it for several years - but the general public is unaware - and..friends, this is the greatest thing we can do for ourselves !! ANYONE in my community share the same interests: CALORIE RESTRICTION AND ANTI AGING with the ZONE ?? I live in Manhattan Beach, CA.... Karen L. P.S. Let's remember: lack of insulin equals more growth hormone production !! At night that is, it's a "Thin Awakening" for the next day. Not a bad proposition. P.P.S. Luigi Cornaro, yes. |

Hello Karen. I go on Zone Diet years ago due to my interest in antiaging medicine. I am member of "Life Extension Foundation", also so popular supplements' company. I work as health/beauty journalist. I take everyday many supplements you may be interesting in if you like antiaging lifestyle. Resveratrol, different kinds of polyphenols, high dose vitamin D.... fish oil obviously. Do you have a supplement routine? Well, you know best dinner is in the Zone, too insulin inhibits GHormone but too low insulin increase cortisol. Also, too insulin ihnibits melatonin at night. I live in Spain, Europe. Hugs |

I think a balanced food diet makes a whole lot of difference to anti-aging. I spend a lot of time researching online stuff and recently I found a program called elixxir which seems to have some fantastic results. When I saw those results I did some further probing and found that the product is an eating program based on a scientific anti-aging eating program. It is believed to product permanent lifelong weight loss and also claims to slash one's risk for cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity thereby extending maximum lifespan by up to 50%. And apparently the good part is there are no meals or supplements you have to buy forever. It’s an eating program and all-natural. Seems like something that is very good. Have a look at elixxir.com and let me know what you think. |

Smith, I looked at the website and searched for info, but none was offered.....just airbrushed pics of an asian guy..... From what I gleaned, it is calorie restriction with any food whatsoever used as the calories.....but the secret is to chew 30 times?????
If you can shed any light on this I would love to hear it. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
