I think the zone is a great diet for people who live sedentary lives, or dont do too much physical activity, however, i dont think its the optimal diet for someone trying to put on muscle. I decided to ignore all the skeptics i was hearing, and completely dedicate myself to the zone for one month. I was never out of the zone, not ever for my post workout shakes. I went to the gym everyday, but i didnt just go there and throw around a few dumbells- i killed myself everyday, for 30 days. I wanted there to be no excuses. After i charted my one month progress-im exactly where i was 30 days ago, and very disapointed. Ive found when i wasnt getting enough calories/macronutirents on the zone. I abided by my protein prescription and everything, and i wasnt eating enough for muscle growth. You need to consume a postive caloric intake to build muscle and the zone doesnt do this. Ive read Sear's idea's about how if your in the zone your body takes the fat on your body and uses that for energy to your muscles, and it sounds all good and dandy, but i dont think its true. Im now on a new diet, which is basically the zone, except i eat ALOT more calories-and only eat high GL carbs right after my workout. Since changing to this diet, Ive gone through one cycle of my routine and can already see muscle growth! I went through 10 cycles on the zone and saw nothing. I know the zone and its science sounds great, i was in debt to it for several months, but what it comes down to is results. All of nutrition isnt 100 percent fact these days, so results are the ultimate equalizer. |

| It does work alex. Look at all the olympic athletes who practice the Zone, not to mention the people in these forums who've reported their LBM increases. Personally, I have 8 or 9 pounds more LBM than I had 7 years ago. (me, an "old " lady, LOL!) Most likely, either your aren't eating enough protein (or need to tweak fat and carbs), or you need to adjust your training program and/or schedule. |

| Ditto what Hill said...the Crossfit trainers I work out with are really good at tweaking Zone for the really serious athletes. Usually it involves adding extra fat and increasing overall number of blocks. I think Zone works fine as-is for most of us but if you are a hard core athlete you need to play around with it to get exactly what you need. I can tell from some of the guys I work out with (including one Olympian) that a modified Zone works great for super-athletic people. |

I think I remember something about positive thinking or some post like that.
Alex the only reason the zone didn't "work" for you is that you were always looking for a reason it wouldn't work. You never bought in to it 100% and were always looking for something "better" or a new way to do it.
Others have already stated the Crossfit and Olympian arguements. I think I am a prime example. I have done nothing but increase muscle mass & strength while following the zone and only working out 5-6 times a week at moderate to semi intense levels.
Good luck to you which ever way you go.

alex, Maybe this can help you or someone else reading here. You posted "I went to the gym everyday, but i didnt just go there and throw around a few dumbells- i killed myself everyday, for 30 days." That could be a part of the problem, too. You might not be using your time at the gym in the most productive way to meet your goals. Make sure you're not overtraining. Totally off topic, since it's June 23, I'm assuming your graduation took place already, or if not, it's about to. Congrats alex! |

yeah, i am officially graduated, havent been on here in a while. I figure we are all different and there are hardly any real hard facts out there about our bodies and nutrition. Some people say carbs are bad, some say there good, low fat, high carb, low carb, etc etc etc and on and on and on, the only thing that really matters is what works for you. Right now im eating a ton of food and working out like crazy and FINALLY, im seeing results, actually great results. I seriously think i wasnt getting in enough calories/carbs on the zone. which is why id feel weak and tired during the day. Now that im feeding my muscles and metabolism, i have packed on excess fat, but im also am gaining muscle like crazy! Ive been doin alot of research on body building and what they do to have SOOO much mucsle, and SOOO little fat. What alot of them do is 1st they do a mass diet, where they basically attempt to put on as much muscle ass possible, and make sure they are eating excess calories to grow. Normally they put on extra fat bc of the extra calories, but they would rather eat too much then not enough (in this stage anyway) What this does is elevate their metabolism so they are burning off more and more calroies everyday. After they put on enough muscle, they go low carb, or they carb cycle. This is basically where they are only trying to maintain their current msucle mass, and use it to help burn away all the excess fat. Bc their metabolism is higher than ever before, the fat melts off. As long as you consume enough protein to support your muscle mass (whihc from what ive read is more than sears suggests) you wont lose any muscle when going low carb. Therefore you body will only use fat to fuel your muscles. Im not completely confidnet in my knowledge of carb cycling just yet, but when im ready to cycle down, i will. The philosphy is the only one that makes sense to me , as far as losing fat, or gaining muscle. |

| Keep in mind that there's more to achieving optimal health than simply gaining muscle and losing fat. The way you go about doing it can hugely impact your current and your future health, anywhere from giving your body the best possible support to creating devastating health issues. |

| I know its not the only thing, but its close to it. The only reason i eat healthy is to look good, and the only reason i work everyday, is to look good. If i didnt look good, but was real heathy "on the inside", i dont think id be satisfied. Gaining muscle is one of the healthiest things you can do, and losing fat is probrably the only thing that comes close to it. This illusion that you can be healthy and fat, or that you can be in good shape but be unhealthy, i think, is just that, an illusion |

alex, i won't argue your results, but i will argue your conclusion that the zone doesn't work for building muscle. now, that might be true for you or, perhaps, maybe you misunderstood the zone and got sub optimal results due to your misunderstanding. one misunderstanding you have is that carbs build muscle. protein builds muscle. if you weren't building muscle, it was because your protein was insufficient. the zone is a protein sufficient diet, so it seems you were out of the zone by eating too little for your lean body mass, activity level and desire to gain more lean body mass. i'm an "i'm gonna do all i can to make this work" kinda guy. if i were you and went 2 weeks without gaining any muscle or strength, i'd add a block. i'd see how that went. i'd add another block if i wasn't getting result. i'm no genetically gifted guy, but i simultaneously lost ~25 lbs of fat while adding about 8 lbs of muscle. my bench increased about 70 lbs in one year. for quite a few months i was increasing 5 lbs every three weeks like clockwork. my fastest 5 lb gain was 5 days! that's over now as my max lift is 125% of my body weight and the gains don't come as quickly. good luck with the fat gain / muscle gain / silent inflammation gain stuff. there is a reason my abs areleaner after 1 year of working out than almost all the muscle guys at my gym who have been doing this for a decade - and it isn't genetics. sometimes things don't come easy or aren't intuitive. if you are getting the results you want now, good for you. keep at it. when you want to optimize your health and lose that extra fat you are accumulating, the zone isn't going anywhere. i think you would have likely been very successful if you ate enough blocks to provide the protein you needed for muscle growth. also, your muscles grow while you REST. REST is important, so make sure you get enough of it. don't work so hard that you don't work smart. |

yeah, and if i saw results on the zone, like you did, then id still be on it. But i felt like i was wasting my time, not getting in enough carbohydrates (which do build msucle, or at least help the protein, alot, to build msucle), or not doing an insulin spike post workout bc it was against the zone etc etc... but all i know is im finally seeing results and thats all i care about. The zone is naturally a "low calorie" diet, as in you are living on less calories then you are used to, prob why people see such great results in the 1st few weeks. This is the reason i think the zone doesnt work to gain msucle, or at least a significant amount of it. You need to eat more calories than you burn off. For a year i didnt beleive taht, and for a year i gained no muscle while everyone else i knew did (and werent working half as hard as i was) I also dont belive in over training, or working too hard. I feel your body can get used to prety much anything, and to see absoulty no results in 30 days bc of over training, i think, isnt possible I still support everyone out there living heathier lives bc if the zone, bc i still think it is the number one healthiest way a person can eat, however i just dont feel its "optimal" for add muscle mass. |

Jeffrey, What were you eating before your workouts, and did you add in extra blocks in order to build that extra lean mass? I find myself tired during my workouts even with a 3 block zone meal beforehand. |

First off congrats on the gains in your bench, I'm not trying to claim to know it all, I'm just going from my own personal experience and research, that said:
I'm not sure why your results were so poor, I've been on the Zone and doing Crossfit for over 6 months now and recently up'd my blocks, in the last month and a half I've gained almost 5 more pounds of muscle for a running total of 60 lbs of fat lost and 10 lbs of muscle gained all while working out for 1 hour a day 3 times a week. While everyone has differences I'd have to agree with some of the others here that you may not have been figuring your block requirements correctly or severely overtraining, every increase in activity requires an increase in intake to maintain the mass. I currently take in 22 blocks a day (155gm of protein/200gms of carbs/35gms of fat, so about 2000 calories a day) my bodyfat has gone from 35% to 17% over that same period.
Now as far as strength I have seen very good gains in power while not gaining excess bulk, Perhaps thats the problem, if your looking to gain muscle bulk and size, I could see that being more difficult but certainly not impossible on the zone diet.
Anyway, I hope you find what works for you, good luck,
Bruce

| well the zone said i should be eating 17 blocks a day, but i felt really fatigued and tired throughout the day, so i figured i wasnt getting in enough calories/carbohydrates to fullfill my workouts and activities. I upped it to 20 blocks, and didnt see any results, so went up to 25 blocks, and didnt gain any weight over about 2 week period. i kept going higher and higher untill it wasnt really a zone diet at all, but i feel so much better, as far as energy goes. Im starting my cutting phase in about a week and ill do that untill college starts. |

Hello all.
Dear Alex, I believe 3 things went wrong: lack of meditation, blocks adjustments and amount of workout. Remember the Zone is a mix of all these to work marvels. I was a dance freak and used to take Zumba lessons every day, sometimes even 2 hours a day and wasn't getting the results I supposed I deserved. The thing was I wasn't monitoring my Heart Rate. Afte I got my POLAR, I understood I need to stay in my HR zone and contrary to what I thought, I do less cardio and I am defining my abs better than ever just by going to the gym 2 or 3 times a week! Also, last week I understood that meditation helped me losing some extra pounds than before, and I only eat 13 blocks a day.
The last thing I learned from my Zone Doctor here in Northern Mexico is that I can have creatine shakes in order to define muscle, since I do not wish to gain bulk but to define it.
I have an appointment on wednesday, I'll talk to him and get back to you guys.
XOXO. |

There's a strength coach named Mark Rippetoe who advocates the Zone Diet and for those who want to gain weight he suggests adding a gallon of milk a day to the regular zone diet. That may be extreme, but if you want to gain weight and are having trouble doing so then maybe you need to go to extremes for a little while and once you hit your desired weight you can cut out the milk and eat enough only to maintain. Here's an interview with the coach (the milk is mentioned on page 3, the Zone Diet on page 4). http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/starting_strength |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil
- Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
- Absorption – remove heavy metals
- Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
