Hi again,
I have decided the only way to learn the zone diet is to talk to you all about it. I have come up with another day's meal and would like some comments. I am on a 9 block zone diet.

Breakfast
4 egg whites
chicken
tomatoes
spinach omelet
coffee, water

Snack:
almonds
green tea - Lipton cold
hummus and saltine crackers

Lunch
chicken quesedesa - chicken
flour tortilla
beans
cheese

Snack
fruits - apple and nectarine

Dinner
salad
cauliflower soup
chicken and vegetables (small portion)

evening snack - small apple

Now the chicken quesadesa is from the local store but fresh ingredients. I make the cauliflower soup and it is great. Here is the receipe; .5 tablespoon butter, 1 yellow onion, 2 cloves garlic, 4 cups chicken broth. 1 head cauliflower. Cook for 20 minutes and then puree.

I know it is a lot of chicken but I don't like too many other types of meat. So do you think this is too much food or what?

Hi Margaret!

You're not eating enough food. The minimum number of blocks for an adult is 11 blocks daily. Also, your snacks need protein added to them (the last two also need fat added to them) in order to be in the Zone. The info in Quick Start Guide (link at right) will be of help.

Hi again,

Since I am trying to lose weight isn't it all right that I lower the amount of blocks I must eat? I know I should have included the fat and protein in the snacks so I can do better on that. Another question even if I do little exercise I still should maintain eating this amount of food. As you might remember, I ride my bike 6 miles a day almost every day but if I stopped doing that I should still eat this amount of food? Thanks.

Margaret,
It's good that you ask....great way to learn.
The zone tries to get you "in the zone" for your metabolism to burn fat....you need to eat enough to do that. You don't want to lose muscle by eating fewer blks than recommended.

Hi Margaret,

No, you should not eat less than you recommended blocks. Eating the recommended blocks in Zone balanced proportions will allow you to lose stored body fat. A 6 mile a day bike ride is not going to significantly increase your block need. I'd suggest to recheck your protein and block requirements using the body fat calculator (link at right). If the daily 6 mile bike ride is your sole form of exercise use the moderate level, active if you prefer (but be careful not to overestimate activity your level because it can result in eating more than you need, which can prevent stored fat loss).

Margaret:

I noticed on your snacks that they only show mostly carb blocks and nothing else.

Your 2nd snack showing an apple and a tangerine, would consist of 3 blocks of carbs. Are you eating any protein or fat carbs with that? 3 blocks of carbs would qualify in a main meal, not so much for a snack....plus you are not balancing it out.

The almonds/saltine crackers snacks, consist of fat- almonds and crackers=carbs...again you are missing the protein and the crackers, being processed, white flour, etc..is definitely a poor carb choice.

In the book Enter the Zone, there are lists of good choices of carbs, you also need to make sure you balance out your meals with the pro/carb/fat combo.

Good luck.

Margaret,

I think you are getting the hang of better carb choices. A few small problems (saltines and the flour tortilla) but you are really getting the hang of picking better carbs than you were before! Good job!

I would recommend sticking with 11 blocks, unless you are someone who is inactive and maybe on the short, petite side. Even still, less than 11 blocks may not be enough for you, and may cause you to lose lean body mass. In the Zone, you want to maintain LBM (or even gain some), while losing fat.

I don't remember if you posted stats ever, but if you want to share that, maybe we can help you with the # of blocks that you need?

Also, just amke sure that you are eating balanced meals and snacks. Maybe it was an oversight, but I don't see any proteins or fat with your last 2 snacks.

Hi all....I hope I don't annoy anyone with my new questions that have probably been answered a hundred times!! I am starting the Zone next Monday....I'm using the time till then to really try and understand the diet and to familiarise myself with the website.

I am trying to lose about 40 lbs - I have a quite active lifestyle and the WOE on this plan sounds ideal to support my training. I am currently training for a marathon - in 5 months time but with 3 half marathons and maybe a triathlon thrown in there before that - so I will be working out at least 5 days a week (I finished a marathon 4 weeks ago - 5hours 15 so quite slow) I am reasonably overweight at 192lbs - 5 foot 9 inches (female!!)

Questions: I don't normally eat breakfast till later - would it be a good idea to have my snack first and then lunch later? I am on 14 blocks so what wold be the most ideal way of spacing them out? What kind of weight loss can I expect (I know everyone is different but say an average)? Is alcohol allowed on the plan? Does anyone know where to get the shakes and bars in the UK or Ireland (I live in Ireland)? Is the meals in minutes book a good one to get or would I get enough info on this site? I'm sure there are more questions but I don't want to overwhelm!!

Thanks in Advance for your replies!!

You can eat a snack first, if you choose. You can organize your blocks in any way that makes sense to you, as long as you are eating at some point within an hour or so after waking, and that you don't go longer than 5 hours without a zone meal or snack. Also, a snack before bedtime is the way to finish off your day. Other than that, you can have the traditional 3-4 block meals, or you can break things up and eat smaller blocks throughout the day.

Everyone is different, so predicting weight loss is difficult. But, lets just say you can average 1-2 pounds per week. Probably more to start out, then it will likely taper off to about a pound per week. You can have alcohol, but keep it limited, 4 oz of red wine per day is fine, paired with some cheese. There is lots of info here, but books are always helpful!

Margaret, does your Arizona green tea have carbs in it? I know that some of the varieties have sugar/carbs, while others don't.

Another interesting tidbit is that I picked up a product the other day, listed as NO calories, but when I looked more closely at the label, there were 4g carb per serving, and there were 2.5 servings per container. So, in reality, there was 10g carb in there, which is really 40 calories. So, please pay close attention to those labels!

It seems to be that you are one of the "unlucky" ones like me who really has to practice more strict adherence to the Zone.

Margaret, your lack of progress is probably due to the lack of Zone balance in your meals, and to not eating enough food (both are noticeable in your most recent menu posting here).

Here's an analysis of your menu:

"Breakfast: 4 egg whites; 1 tomatoe, avocado - 3T"

Egg = 2P (missing 2 "hidden" F blocks, because egg whites are fat free protein)
Tomato = 1/2 C
Avocado = 3F; 2 of these 3 blocks supply the missing F blocks leaving you with only 1F added to the meal

Total blocks = 2P, 1/2 C and 1 F

Add more P, C and F, enough to yield 3 P, 3 C and 3F

"Snack - 1/2 zone bar - official
coffee, water, Arizona green tea"

This is balanced if Arizona Tea is Arizona Diet Green Tea. If it's regular Arizona Green Tea, which contains 2 C per 8 oz serving, then this snack contains too much C.

"Lunch - chicken quesadeos
water, Arizona green tea - 1 can"

Ditto on the AZ green Tea. I can't give you an accurate analysis of this without knowing the actual ingredients, but most likely it contains too much unfavorable carb.

"Snack - hummus, saltine crackers, avocado - 1T"

This snack is not Zone balanced because its missing protein.

"Dinner - Salad - green lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, walnuts in salad
chicken - 2 pieces of thighs"

Total blocks in this dinner are about 3P, maybe 1 C (probably less) and unknown amount of fat.

This meal is very low in carbs, containing at most a block (that's if you have two whole tomatoes in it). to make this a Zone meal, switch the thighs to chickien breast meat, switch the nuts to a Zone favorable fat such as almonds, in an amount to yied 3 blocks, or add 3 blocks of olive oil as dressing, add another couple blocks of Zone friendly veggies and/or fruit to your meal.

"nighttime snack: strawberry shake 1/2 cup"

Without knowing the ingredients, I can't give an accurate analysis of this snack.

Work on your balance and eat 11 blocks daily (that’s 11P, 11C and 11F). These two things will put you in the Zone.

Mea cupa Sue et al. Are almonds really so important and not walnuts suitable? I am diligently reading Toxic Fat and so will ask do you think 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA will help me? I am doing good with the steel cut oatmeal and Toxic fat recommends 1/3 ounce protein powder or 7 ounces which is easy and I will enjoy. Do you really eat all this bacon? So what brand do you think is best if I am to eat 6 turkey bacon strips? I am going to try the meatloaf and the stuffed tomato which seem to make sense. Vegetarians must have a very hard time on this diet. I use to be a vegetarian and think that is why I am overlooking the protein so often. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome Margaret! :-)

Keep at it, you're getting there.

Yes to the almonds vs. walnuts.

Yes to the fish oil, thought the amount you need will depend on you level of wellness (follow the dosing info in TOXIC FAT).

Re protein powder, 1 block of protein powder is the amount which contains 7 grams of protein (a 3 block meal should contain around 20 grams of protein). You can use the nutrition label on your protein powder to determine how much to use in a meal because brands differ.

I don't happen to eat turkey bacon that often. The brand I'd recommend is Oscar Mayer (it used to be the Louis Rich brand before it had the Oscar Mayer name on it). It has the best taste of all I’ve tried. Second best, IMO, is Bar S, when you can find it, second best because it has a little less fat and still tastes good. I’ve tried all the other turkey bacons available when I live and find the others just don’t taste as good. Try wrapping it around sea scallops and then broil them. Delicious! Use 1/2 slice turkey bacon for each scallop.

Vegetarians can do fine in the Zone. About 1 2 to 2/3 of my meals and snacks are vegetarian (I used to be vegetarian too). Check out the 7 Day planner for vegetarians, in Quick Start Guide (link at right).

Margaret, I agree with Sue's analysis. Did you answer the question about the Arizona Green Tea? Your meals are not balanced, but I think you are doing better with your carb choices (just look back at what you were eating a few months ago). A few glitches, the quesadillas and the crackers, but we aren't all perfect!

Walnuts vs. almonds: almonds are a better fat, but if you want to eat walnuts, too, I don't see a problem with that at all. Variety is good. Walnuts may offer some nutrient that perhaps almonds don't have (I haven't verified that, but you can check it out). I believe that it is always important to get some variety.

You asked about turkey bacon? Jennie-O makes a very good turkey bacon. It is much lower in fat than the brand that Sue suggested.

Hi again,

Thanks for all your help. I think it is helping but have to say no weight loss yet. I have a different type of question this time around. It is about fat. I just saw a commercial which stated that 2% fat milk has more fat in it than a small serving of french fries! Is that possible? I know Dr. Sears does not want you to eat french fries. I haven't touched them in years. So if I am eating beacon now what type of fat am I consuming that is so good for me? Also if I do the 2.3 grams of EPA and DHA where do I find it? I have checked at our local CVS etc and can't find the right portions of 2.3 grams. Do I cut a higher quality or maybe it is sold on this web site? Sorry to be so dumb but as I have stated I have decided I have to ask these questions or I will make no progress and unfortunately I have made any progress for too long. I am really starting to wonder what it will feel like to actually lose some of this fat. It is a good feeling. Please tell me what you think. Thanks for your help.

Hi! Your lack of progress is simply due to you lack of meal balance. Yes, the appropriate fish oil is available here (go to the SHOP tab above). 4 capsules of Dr. Sears Zone fish oil (or 1 tsp of liquid Zone fish oil) contain the recommended 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA. Note that the 2.5 grams in the recommendation refers to the amount of EPA adn DHA in your fish oil, not the total grams of fish oil.

The kind fo fish oil sold in stores is not recommended for the Zone. It is a lesser quality oil and it contains too much contamination to be safe to ingest in the amounts recommended for the Zone.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.

Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.

Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3

Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
