Hi again everyone,
Margaret you are right I haven't lost any weight at all. I eat so moderately and exercise so much. I really don't understand why I can't lose even a pound. I do the 6 miles a day of bike riding. Workout at Shapes 3 to 4 times a week including a lot of swimming. I am taking the diet supplements. It was very difficult for me to cut out carbs in my diet but I did it so that it wasn't excessive and I still cannot lose a pound. I feel it is totally impossible. What do you suggest? I am willing to spend money on getting this done but I hired a trainer at Shapes (not that expensive) but I didn't lose a pound. I should mention I am over 50 so weight loss will always be harder now. |

Bread Bread Bread I have been eating bread, or tortilla , with at least one meal a day. I know these are not the best options, but how bad are they. I do not eat them for my full carbs, normally fruit and veggies also. I really do it out of convience, and it actually fills me up, and I still feel the boost of being in the zone. Is there anything drastically negative about having 3-4 c blocks of bread a day ?( I;m on 18 blocks ). I feel I'm not overdoing it, and if it fills me up until my next zone snack or meal, what the damage? |

| You should keep the amount of bread to no more than 25% of all the carb in any one meal (this is explained in Zone books), and make sure that the rest of the carb in the meal comes from the best Zone carb choices. The less bread you eat the better Zone results you'll have. BTW, veggies and fruit are as easy to grab as a piece of bread. |

Margaret how are you determing your weight loss? is it based off the scale? I've been working out 5 or 6 days a week, and following the zone diet for about a month now. According to the scale, I've gained 4 pounds, but I know its not fat. My pants are a bit looser and I see more definition in my legs and arms. Are you sure your not gaining muscle from the work outs? Also, from preevious weight loss experience. It seems it takes my body a bit to catch up. I'll follow a diet and exercise routine for several months and feel no weight loss, but then in week 8 or ten, Bam! My body will adjust and I'll start seeing major changes. |

With five block meals it seems I have to have a few C blocks from the unfavorable list of carbs. Wether its baked beans or kidney beans ect.. The first week I tried the fruit and veggie method and it was too much food, not to mention really expensive. I figure an unfavorable carb is an unfavorable carb. I strive to eat bread at only one meal a day. I guess if that means my progress on the diet is slowed down, then thats an ok exchange for me. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to stop my progress or have a major effect on weight loss. There is no way I can have 100% favorable carbs at each meal, its just too much food, and I can't take time at work to break it up into more meals. basically, are all the unfavorable carbs on the list equal? And will eating bread just slow my results, or will it hinder them completely. Thank you by the way!, you have been a big help! |

Margaret, As we get older, it is important to do what we can to keep our hormones in balance. Eating right plays a big role here. Your post suggests that you have cut the carbs out, but you still have a few challenges to face, like making sure your meals are balanced, and that you have truly switched over to eating a diet with lots of veggies and fruits, very few unfavorable carbs. And, losing weight is only part of the story. If you are working out, you can be losing fat and gaining lean body mass. The net result is no weight loss, but your body will still look better! |

william, yes, some unfavorable carbs are better than others!! 100% rye bread is the best choice for bread. It's glycemic index is lower than other breads. The more you learn about glycemic index the better. (internet) I use it for toast a couple times a week. (but you'll lose faster without it) |

Hi william,
The less unfavorable carb you eat, the better insulin control you'll have, and the better your Zone results will be. The Zone rule is to keep unfavorabel carb to 25% or less of all the carb in a meal. |

Hi, I'm new to this...day 2 to be exact. I'm not sure how to count blocks. Is it cups/oz? I know I'm not getting them all in because I'm doing the eye it on a plate filling up 2/3 of plate with salad/veggies/fruits and 1/3 of protein (chicken, tuna, shrimp). I use EVO on veggies or salads, but know I'm not getting it in with every meal. I'm also not an early morning person and sleep til 8:30 - 9, take a synthroid capsule upon waking then have to wait 45 min - 1hr before eating breakfast. I've been using a soy protein drink using soy milk and 1 1/2 tsp of natural peanut butter. Does the pb count as a fat?
I am also not able to exercise because of a knee problem (waiting for knee replacement but not til winter because of bones healing from a break last summer. I was told by dr to not walk too much. Neck and back problems prevent me from doing arm exercies. Yup, this is what is known as the "golden years". lol
Any advice anyone can give me will be appreciated. BTW, I weighed this morning and have lost 3.6 pounds, started on Monday.

Welcome Janice! Sounds like you're off to a very good start! Yes, peanut butter is counted as fat for the Zone. You can learn more about blocks in the Zone Food Blocks tab in Quick Start Guide (link at right in HELPFUL TOOLS). The method you're using is very good, too. I lost 100 pounds eating the Zone diet with the hand eye method of protein the size of you palm, filling 2/3 of the plate with veggies, etc. Just do what you can with exercise for now, even is it’s not that much. Moving a little is better than not moving at all. Taking fish oil will be a great help, too. I'll be happy to help if you have questions. Good Luck! Almost forgot! I take thyroid med, too. It's fine for you to continue with the same wakeup schedule you're used to, and to wait 45 min to an hour to eat. Be sure to eat all your blocks each day. |

Hi everyone,
I have another question. I think Margaret is right when she says I have to balance my meals better. I agree with a prior post about the amount of vegetables we need to consume to balance our meals. Can you use the juice Fusion for vegetables? I am sure you have seen it in the stores it is a remake of V8 vegetable juice. They claim it is one full serving of vegetables and if you buy the fruit juice one full service of fruit. I really only want it for the vegetables. I can eat enough fruit anytime. Also how does this lunch stack up. A palm size serving of ham, 2 tablespoon of gucamole and a glass of the vegetable fusion drink? That should be protein, fat and carbs for 4 blocks protein, 3 blocks carbs and 3 blocks fat. I tend to like to eat my gucamole with crackers but that would only be 3 saltines. No weight loss yet but hoping if I can get my meals a little more balanced it can happen. I do feel I am not quite as hungry balancing the meals as I use to be. Also, what really is starvation mode? Everyone tells me I am in starvation mode but I am never starved and I never loss weight. Thanks for your interest. |

Hi! Juice isn't going to be the answer for you Margaret, because it's unfavorable carb. To control insulin levels in the Zone you shouldn't drink very much juice. Starvation mode is when your body realizes it isn't getting enough food so it slows your metabolism down to try to conserve the energy is has stored (your stored fat). The result is that you won't lose your stored body fat. |

| Hi Sue, One of the greatest things I did for the zone in the last 3 days is buy a kitchen digital food scale. To me it was the best thing ever. It weighs pretty accurately and it runs on batteries. For lunch if I have leftover meat or fish, I will weigh 3 oz (for chicken; meat) or 41/2 oz for fish. I usually do this for lunch and dinner. For breakfast I have dairy (milk, eggs; fruit, nuts or olive oil) (only examples, yes I balance); So these past 3 days I measured my protein accurately and ate my veggies & my fat and let me tell you, I've been in the zone. Before measuring I used the eyeball method and went over, felt full....., but knowing the exact ounces for protein, makes a difference. I take the protein measurement, fill my plate with veggies and use 1 Tsp for oil. I try not to snack on nuts as I snack on them a lot and figure this is a better choice, oil to put on my veggies. I also drank more than 96 oz of water today and some using apple cider vinegar, spread throughout the day. (many trips to the b-room). Apple cider helps me drink the water faster. I think it's the fountain of youth... it also controls insulin. Anything helps. A walk during lunch now that the weather is getting nicer, wish it would stop raining! The better I feel the more motivated i feel to keep choosing the repeated foods that work best. I do take the fish oil also, but not purified, I take the mollecularly (sp) distilled brand (Natrol) 2 x's a day. I notice without it, there is a difference so I continue to take them. I am not perfect, during the day I chew gum all day long, snack on little things (don't snack all day like I used to); snack on sugar free hard candy and sometime a baby piece of chocolate like 1 M&M; or a bite of a mini chocolate. bad me, I know.... that said....I am noticing my clothes fitting better on me today but haven't lost anything. I just have to stick to it. I'm trying. K, hubby is bothering me to watch TV so gotta go. Just wanted to share my good feelings of today. HOpe I can stick with how i've been feeling these last few day going forward. Hope this motivates others who are reading this post. Sue, you've been an anspiration, thank you for all your advice and thanks to others on this post as well. : ) |

Hi Janice, I'm a newbie too. Today is day 2 for me. Yesterday was kind of tough. I did well until after lunch and then I had a very tiny piece of cake and a little scoop of ice cream to celebrate a co-workers birthday. Unfortunately that made me feel awful, but I found when I had my zone snack I started to feel better. I am trying to lose about 70 pounds in the long run, but my short term goal is 10. I started on the Zone because I have been exercising and doing everything else with little if any results. I just began training for my first half-marathon and I'm hoping that the nutritional balance will help me. Any advice about the Zone lifestyle and weight loss will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Hi everyone again,
I am really trying to get some of my meals correct so I have been experimenting and have come up with the following: Breakfast: 2 egg whites, 1 regular egg, 3 oz. of chicken, as many veggies as I can find - tomatoes, zuchinni, yellow squash and spinach; 2 T guacamole
Lunch - chicken quasedera - chicken (3 ozs) , black beans, a little cheese vegetables on a soft taco. 2 T guacamole
Dinner - turkey (3 oz) with tomatoe dice pieces, worchestershire sauce, more veggies including spinach, corn and canned beets. 2 T guacamole and 1 piece rye bread.
Two snacks - a zone bar (official Dr. Sears bar) in the a.m. ; p.m. - applesauce, green tea and a small amount of either strawberry shake (from zone book if I am really hungry) or just strawberries.
I am on 11 block zone diet. Bike ride 6 miles a day. Workout at least 3 times a week at Shapes. Take fish oil capsule daily, take zone weight loss supplements daily. Before bed have yogurt with blueberries with 1 T guacamole.
Am I close to doing it correctly? Sue you change your photo so much. Who is the guy in the photo these days?

Hi Margaret! He's my son. :-) Good job on the meals! A quick analysis of those meals: Breakfast contains 5 P, probably not 5 C and 2 F. Lunch is not too bad, but would be much better for the Zone if you replaced the taco and had a piece of fruit of some berries for dessert, and added another fat block. Dinner is missing some fat. Also, eating corn, beets and bread all in the same meal is eating too much high density carb at once. Instead of eating strawberries by themselves for a snack, eat some P and F with them to be Zone balanced. Yogurt already contains protein and carb in Zone balanced amounts. Adding blueberries to yogurt will tip the balance toward too much carb. If it's only a few berries, it won’t matter much, but if more berries, you'll want to take less than 1 block of yogurt and mix in some protein powder in order to balance the carb in the berries and still keep it to a 1 block snack. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.
8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.
- Extraction of fish oil
- Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
- Absorption – remove heavy metals
- Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
- Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating
No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
