Hi Julie

Thanks for your post. I have to be honest as I really need this weight to come off. I am a "serial weigher". I do it morning and night. I have done it for years. I also check my waist measurement. I suppose it does mess with my mind but I want to see results! If this was all pre menopause I wouldnt be taking up all of Sue's and CC's time! I must admit that I feel like I have lost weight over the last 2 days from cutting out the fruits - hopefully this will show up somewhere on the scales or tape measure! Anyway .... I will keep plugging away ....

Hope you dont have too many down days .... I cant wait to get on to the forum to read everyone's post. I have learnt so much.

How are you going with the Zone? Please, if you have any questions, hints, tips etc just get online!

Hi Sue

Ok .... let's put the jelly bean story to rest (ha ha). It was the day after the tea. I just wanted to say that I was happy that I could pass them up .... if this were last year I would have eaten some every time I went past.

Oh ... I didnt know that breakfast had to be veggies ... I was thinking as I was not having the fruit having the cereal would be an ok choice. The yoghurt with peanut butter sounds nice. I have rediscovered tofu. So many ways you can prepare it.

Thanks for the suggestions for snacks and meals. I dont know what spaghetti squash is - I dont think we have that here.

We only do weights classes twice a week. I know you have to have a days break in between for your muscles to recover.

Sue, I thought you were going to say ... if all this doesnt get you losing fat in a week of two I am handing you over to Barry Sears!!! I laughed ....

I am feeling much more positive and feel that the last 2 days I have been making very good choices with my food. Today we went for a drive in the country and for my lunch I took - turkey meat from the deli, hummus, cucumber and cashews. Fingers crossed this was a good meal!!

Off to have my snack and then bed. Talk to you soon.

Margaret, I also meant to mention something about your new meds. Some blood pressure meds, specifically Beta blockers and diuretics, elevate insulin (that's insulin, not be confused with glucose; they're not the same thing). Taking those drugs will require very strict Zone adherence for to achieve insulin control. It can be done. I lost all of my 100 pounds while taking a low dose fo a Beta blocker.

I'm not sure how the Januvia you're taking will affect your ability to be in the Zone. I still am not sure whether the test you recently reported here is a fasting glucose test or a fasting insulin test. From what you're told you've told us, it sounds like a fasting glucose test. If you had the results expressed in US readings it would be immediately apparent which test you had done. You might want to double check with your doctor for you own peace of mind. It's my understanding the Jaunvia increases insulin production in order to decrease blood sugar levels.

Here's a place to learn more out about Januvia (click on "How Januvia Works):

http://www.januvia.com/sitagliptin/januvia/consumer/type-2-diabetes-treatments/lowering-blood-sugar.jsp?WT.svl=5

Here's more info from Dr. Sears:

http://www.januvia.com/sitagliptin/januvia/consumer/type-2-diabetes-treatments/lowering-blood-sugar.jsp?WT.svl=5

Also, were you previously taking a high BP med and this new one in Feb. is a change to a different one, or is this your first time on high BP med? This information could help to give us more clues as to what's been going on with your Zone progress.

Thanks!

Hi Sue

Thanks for the website. I will have a look at it it tomorrow.

This is the third BP medicine I have been on as they have not been lowering my BP. The one before this one was Natrilix. The doctor was really annoyed with this one as it hadnt helped with lowering.

When I had the blood test I had to fast for 10-12 hours the night before.

This is what I wrote down when the doctor was reading out the results.

Estrogen - getting lower
Liver - fatty
Kidneys/thyroid - good
Cholestoral - 5
HDL - 1.2
LDL - 3.1
Insulin Resistance - High
Glucose 5.9. The range for this is - 3.4 to 6.

Things are a little busy this week but I will try and ring him to get a copy then I can give you some more information.

Thanks. I hope you are not thinking of my issues too much. I am sure something is going to work. My daughter says the same thing with her PCOS. We just have to find the key!!

Thanks! That info confirms it. You had a fasting glucose (blood sugar) test, not a fasting insulin test. That info doesn't show you your actual insulin level. You may have had the fasting insulin test, too, but you don't have the result of it among the info you wrote down.

I'm not thnking too much, lol!

Hey, Margaret!

Thanks for the additional information on your labwork. It is tough to figure out, when the values are not in US terms. Did you get a triglyceride level?

But, definitely things that you can reverse (or reduce) via the Zone.

I think your lunch that you took along sounds great! And delicious! Did it fill you up?

Here's another tip that may help you with your glucose control (and everything else): fiber. Try to aim for meals with high fiber (not from bread or grains, either). You could aim for 10 grams per meal and 5 grams per snack. Slightly less is fine, but maybe something that you can set as a goal.

Hi Margaret,

Looks like you and I were posting at tthe same time earlier. I hadn't yet seen your notes about yesterday when I wrote to you eariler. Sounds like things are good! Great about the tofu and your weight training plan, you lunch! Here's some info about spaghetti squash, and photos, too. The second link one is from a site containing interesting ideas and recipes:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a7/Spaghetti_Squash_cooked_and_prepared_3.jpg/450px-Spaghetti_Squash_cooked_and_prepared_3.jpg

http://www.all-creatures.org/recipes/squash-spag-cook.html

The point of eating veggies for all your carb is to get your blood sugar under control so you can get your insulin levels down into the Zone. That's why it's best to do it for all meals and snacks. What I don't know in your specific case is whether taking Janunvia, which increases insulin production, is going to affect the whole picture. I'd suggest for you to contact Zone wellness support (in "Contact Us" at the bottom of this page) or Live Zone Chat (upper right of this page) to ask if Januvia will inpact a person's ability to stay in the Zone, and if so, what additional dietary measures you could take to keep you in the Zone while taking Januvia (in my mind this equates to handing you over to Barry Sears!).

Here's an article about some common meds that elevate insulin levels:

http://www.zonediet.com/tabid/130/itemid/427/Medication-Impact-Several-popularly-prescribed-dr.aspx

Natrilix is a diuretic. It could have been contributing to your having to practice stricter adherence to the Zone diet than you did years ago in order to see results. It wouldn't have necessarily meant you couldn't be successful, but rather that you'd need to be very rigorous about following the diet.

Keep up the good work!

Margaret, I think I had given you some information already about januvia, as I recall reading about it when you first posted that the doctor had started this med for you.

It does raise insulin levels, in an attempt to bring down the blood sugar. It also reduces the production of Glucagon.

I am not sure how all of this will be affected by the Zone, but I would just keep tabs and watch for symptoms of hypoglycemia, especially as you begin to regulate your blood sugar with diet.

Hi Sue

I did look at images of spaghetti squash a while ago but will look again. I have never seen it here.

To tell you the truth Natrilix did nothing in the way of being a diuretic. Actually I think I was going to the toilet less during the day when taking them.

I am going to send a message to the live Zone chat now so will let you know what they say ....

Hi Margaret!

Here's a past article from drsears.com that might help you with those conversions:

Blood tests using European measurements - Relevance: 3006
Q: I've been trying to find someone who can translate my European values of blood tests so that they are comparable with the equivalent US reference units you quote in your books. For example fasting insulin in your books is measured in uU/ml, whereas in Europe it's measured in millimol/liter. Would you know how I can make the conversion? A: The conversion factor for insulin uIU/ml to pmoles/L is 6.945. Converting uIU/ml of insulin to ug/L, the conversion factor is 0.0417. Just for completeness, the conversion factor for cholesterol in mg/dl to mmoles/L is 0.026 and for triglycerides from mg/dl to mmoles/L is 0.011.

Hi Sue

Thanks very much. I have copied the text and will print it out.

I got a copy of my blood tests results 2 days ago. I was quite shocked when I saw the insulin (Fasting) reading - it was 32.3 H (High) - and the range next to it said it shoudld be under 12.0!!!! I was quite depressed.

If I get a chance today I will get on to the web and read up about the Januavia tablets and insulin resistance. I will be seeing the doctor on 27 March when he will weigh me etc - wonder what he will say - he is concerned about the blood pressure but I want this awful stomach to be gone. I am not feeling happy today (again ....). I am still trying to find that key to my weight loss ... nothing seems to be working ....

Hi!

Yes, 32 is high (if you're sure that's the actual number converted to American fasting insulin test measurements). The levels to achieve for the Zone are below 10. It explains why you're not losing stored fat at the moment.

You know what to do to help you gain control of your insulin (you know, for now do the veggies, no liquid meals or snacks, no unfav C etc.)

You'll get there.

How's it going with the Omega Rx?

Hi Sue

Either way - if it is 10 or under for the Zone or 12 here it is soooo high.

Going to the markets tomorrow so will get as many veggies as I can!!!

I remember the "no liquid meals" - but what do you mean "no snacks"? Or do you mean I should have snacks that have veggies?

Omega Rx is ok .... I am not feeling any different, I havent had any side effects. Do you think I should increase the dose?

I wrote to the forum email about the Januavia. The lady who responded has advised to keep plugging away and that it is harder with menopause but I should see results slowly but surely (I cant wait!!!!). She also said more good carbs and Omega 3.

Hi!

I'm in hurry, but wanted to get a reply to you.

I meant no liquid snacks. Yes try to make every carb you eat be a favorable vegetable. That is what it means to eat all carb from favorable veggies. It means at breakfast, lunch, dinner and all snacks.

Yes, I'd increase to 3 teaspoons of Omega Rx for now.

Gotta go. Talk to you here again soon! :-)

Margaret,
I have been busy at work, and in my personal life this week, so haven't had a chance to jump back in.

Hang in there with the veggies! I know you are feeling down about your results, but hopefully you can use this as a motivating factor to stick with it. It does help when you have something in front of you that you can use to measure. Now, you have it.

Veggies, veggies, veggies!

Hi CC

I thought you had been a bit quiet!

Went to the markets and yes got lots of veggies .....

I still have that 32 figure in my head! When I go to the doctor next I am going to go through each test result and get him to explain them in detail. Another thing was the uric acid is too high .... grooannn

You asked me the reading for trigliceride previously. There is something that says Trigs. So I am assuming that is it. It is 1.53 mmol/L. The range for this is (0.50-2.00) so I am within the limits for this.

Yes I have all these figures but I feel like I am wading through quick sand. Exercise is going ok, food is ok, but measurements and scales not ok ..... even if I could just loose some small amount each week it would be something but it is all at a standstill ......

Hi Margaret!

Your food may not be as ok as you think. What's ok for one person is not necessarily ok for another. Your results demonstrate that your food intake could still use some tweaking. If you aren't already doing so, it would be great for you to begin keeping a food diary of everything you put into your mouth and how you feel 4 hours after meals (refer to the Zone success Journal in Quick Start for Zone diary ideas). It'll give you lots of valuable info to work with. If you've been keeping a detailed food diary, the next step is to review it and make a few changes. I'll be glad to help if you have questions.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

  1. Extraction of fish oil
  2. Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
  3. Absorption – remove heavy metals
  4. Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
  5. Oil conversion to ethyl esters
  6. Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
  7. True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
  8. Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating

Clean Sources

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
