Hey, Barbara, yeah, the creme fraiche is saturated fat, just for a treat, not a great choice....when I need a sweet I use a smoothie with stevia, mmmm, but not really a festive dessert for company. But you are doing very well, from the sound of it! Roberta, welcome! Maybe just print out the shopping list.....there's one somewhere in the getting started section. Shannon, at least you grew up liking vegetables! You can stir fry them in a bit of almond oil....I do it a lot! Then sometimes I add a bit of almond butter and a bit of water at the end to make a yummy sauce.

Janet.... I became a smoothie fan per Jana and Meri's advice... so I am also a follower of your already "famous smoothie lunch"... I love it. But once I start commercializing it, I will pass profit to you for trademark.... don't worry.
Today lunch --- work cafeteria... they didn't had any veggie.. so I had to eat beef with some beans and a cookie... to complete carbs (they had to twist my arm, so I could eat the cookie...) Tomorrow they will bring chicken salad for me.. (hope they do not forget as today). Dinner -- green smoothie.. with combination of "Janet famous" and "Meri's green" and protein powder...and avocado oil.... too. I will post it tomorrow, and let you know how it tasted. snack - blueberry "hielito"

There is different blends of "hielito" I've try so far... blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and strawberry... also chocolate and plain + vainilla flavor on it. Today I will prepare - mango hielito -- since I have surplus of mango and granny apples form my kid's birthday party. Kids didn not ate them, so I am creating new recipies.. like the mango sauce baked chicken (you can ask for the recepie if interested...jajaja) I mentioned on the 4th of July thread. Hielito: is packaged on a bag (3.5" X 9" long bag).. purr the mix, and make a knot on the top, then you can freeze it. -1/2 homemade yogurt (also have surplus.. my mom's prepare it, but you can but plain yougurt instead) - half block worth of fruit - 1 teaspoon of protien powder to complete the block.. - olive oil or 3 almonds,... (depends on what's available... ja) Blend, purr and freeze... Hope you like them.... (you can alwas skip the bag stuff, I do since it is easier to manage, I can prepare many and storage make it easier)
Jana - I told my kid I have a friend name Jana.. and she said "are you Hanna Montana's Friend?".... |

Well, instead of trying to catch up, I will just jump in right here... Weekend of camping went well! Did really good with eating, didn't have any s'mores at all! LOL! I only had one meal that was a bit "out there" but not too bad. None of my meals took my energy away or left me feeling hungry. So, to my surprise, I have hunger today! B-strawberry smoothie L-sauteed veggies (a bit of carrot, celery, onion, tomato) served with a leftover hamburger S-marinated tomatoes, string cheese D-leftover hamburger, veggies S-about to go to bed and I had better figure out what I am having! LOL! |

Hi Ladies!
Well I'm going to squeeze this in just before midnight central time! I talked myself into getting on the Wii last night cause I knew I would have to answer to all of you! I worked out for 30 min. and I got Alex to do 15 min. mostly Aerobics but he was really getting mad on the last couple minutes of his 10 min. free run. Of course I was lazy today and so far have done nothing. The most exercise I've had today so far was clipping on my front hedge for about 10 minutes - I know pretty bad. The good news - I still weighed in at 199 this morning - Alex would not go to bed last night - just awful & then had to be up at 7 am for Summer School - he weighed himself but I don't know what it was.
Br: Salad & Jana, I don't know if it's enough protein, but I've been doing it with a slice of low fat mozarella cheese BTW thanks for the info on the smoothie - I will have to try sometime
L: More Salad!
D: About 2 oz. chicken breast, strawberries with creme fraiche, & more salad!
I'll probably have a light snack before I turn in but I don't think I'll get my exercise in. Really tired from lack of sleep last night. Talk to you tomorrow! |

Good Morning everyone, Its a beautiful morning. Welcome back CC, glad you had a nice trip. Barbara, which Wii game are you using? No Jana, I haven't had to use my Wii board in the Active one, but I use it with Wii Fit. Yesterday I had a tiny piece of cheese (size of the top of my thumb), with a cracker, while preparing dinner. Also, 8 cherries after my late snack while reading. I just felt I needed a little something. For today: Breakfast Creamy Mushroom Scrambled Eggs with Nine Grain Toast Lunch Grilled Wild Mahi Mahi on Whole Wheat Ciabatta Bread with Lettuce, Tomato & Thousand Island Dressing Dinner New York Strip Steak with Mango BBQ Sauce with Spanish Style Brown Rice and Sauteed Mushroom Medley Snack Honey Almond Cheese Cake Dessert Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies Lunch might change, a rep wants to meet at lunch. If she is on time, then I will have sushi. Enjoy today.... |

Hi BJ!
Good to see you back here. A tip, make sure your meal salads containenough P, C and F to give you a full 3 block meal. It doesn't sound like you're eating enough. You can tweak your meals to be closer to the Zone by using the info in Quick Start Guide. Have fun with it! |

Bernie...Jana Hanna Montana...LOL!!! Kids say the cutest things! I tried strawberry hielito last night...it kept me in the zone over night but I put it in a small plastic container to freeze and it was really hard (frozen)....is it easier to eat out of the plastic baggie? I guess if its in a baggie you can massage it to loosen it up some before eating...I'll try the baggie next time. It was really yummy...and kept me in the Zone all night!! Your recipe is great, Bernie! I've been avoiding fruit at bedtime because I seemed to wake up hungry in the night but the hielito worked for me...yay!!! I'd love to see your Mango Chicken recipe...sounds delish!
Welcome back Cran!
Janet....sounds like you need a smoothie!! ;-)
I have a question....I noticed a few people listing Light Laughing Cow Cheese so I picked some up from the grocery store. I just had it as a snack and was thinking 'this is just like cream cheese' as I spread it....but cream cheese is unfavourable right? So is Laughing Cow unfavourable too?

Hi Jana, In Laughing Cow light (the one with 6 g protein and 3 g fat in a serving) half of the fat is saturated fat. This is why cheese is considered to be a "fair" Zone protein choice, not a best choice. It's not only about how much fat you eat, but also what type. Saturated fat promotes inflammation. While 1.5 grams is not a lot of fat, the more saturated fat you eat, the more AA in your body, which will require more fish oil to dilute it out to bring your AA/EP level into the range which will lower your risk for chronic diseases (cancer, heart disease, etc.). Same goes for omega 6 fats. Cream cheese is not quite the same situation because it contains very little protein. Staying healthy in the Zone is not only about how much fat you eat, but also about what type of fat you eat. Saturated fat promotes inflammation. While 1.5 grams is not a lot of fat, the more saturated fat you eat, the more AA in your body, which will require more fish oil to dilute it out to bring your AA/EPA into the range which will lower your risk for chronic diseases (cancer, heart disease, etc.). Same goes for omega 6 fats. The reason we choose very lean proteins for the Zone and add fat back in the form of monounsaturated fat is that monounsaturated fat will not negatively impact your lipid profile. BTW, you probably did better with Bernie's hielito for a bedtime snack as compared to other bedtime snacks you've tried with fruit for a couple of reasons, because it contains only a portion of its carbs from fruit and because the rest of the carbs are from yogurt. The kind of protein powder on uses can also make a slight difference. Consuming soy protein results in slightly lowered insulin responses (refer to THE SOY ZONE for more info). The time release protein powder sold by Zone Labs also gives excellent results, for obvious reasons (re the time release factor). |

Jana... yes, my girl say things to laugh... but turning into a big girl now.. (8 years!! ).. about the light laughing cow.. I check over the internet the nutrition facts.. and only have 2gr protein, 1 gr carb but 4 gr fat.. so maybe you can use it as -fair- choice of fats... from once in a while or something like that... about the "hielito".. you are right.. you tear the corner of the bag and will melt a little with the warm of your hand, and also you can bite... other thing I do, I put in the microwave (without the bag, in a glass) and defrost it a little.. then with a spoon I crush.. and eat as "raspado"... (icee ??). I guess it help at night because it takes long to eat and it is like a treat... YEsterday night I drank milk for my before bed snack (instead of hielito).. I woke up starving... I had been months that I am not that hungry in the morning....
Christina -- I like reading your meals... sound delicious. Do you cook yourself? I like the fact that you have dessert everyday... (at dinner ? or before bed?)... are you doing better know with your leg?
Barbara and Alex: don't forget protein... you are doing good job. keep up and don't forget also about relax and laugh.. being positive helps a lot... to have good health and also to loose weight. (Believe !!!)
Janet: ... I also think you need smoothies jajajaja.... give us another recipie.. please.
Cranberrycat: congratulations for staying in the zone while camping.. no marshmallows sounds difficult task to complete on a camp trip... that is nice. |

Hi Ladies! I took a really late evening nap & here I am again awake at 2 a.m. but that's good cause I haven't reported in to you yet.
This morning I weighed in at 197.8 and Alex was 202.4 - I think he may be raiding the frig or pantry without me knowing. I ended up having a bowl of straberries with some creme fraiche & a couple wafer-sliced pieces of ham with vidalia onion sauce for my late night snack yesterday, and after I left you all a message I got motivated and worked out on the Wii for 30 minutes and my nightowl Alex who also naps during the day right now like me, put in 15 minutes.
Christine - I have the Wii Fit & I do mostly the aerobics ones, some balance ones, and a couple yoga moves. Is that what you have?
Sue - Thanks for the idea about Quick Start - that might help - I've re-read most of the Inflammation and Zone Books and I'm having trouble with that Belly Button measurement! I know that sounds silly! - the tape keeps wanting to rise up to my wasteline in the back & when I look in the mirror the measuring tape is not level & when I artificially set it lower in the back to be even with my belly button it doesn't look like a wasteline measurement to me at all! But after doing all the calculations, I think I am about 11 blocks a day but it seems like it will take a lot of work to figure out how many turkey bacon slices is a block, etc.
Janet I know you'll be fine - everybody's gotta have a little fun once in a while - tomorrow is my Bridge night out so I may end up having some wine tomorrow if we play late night at the restaurant/bar.
BTW Sue, et al., any good ideas on what good fats to eat, everything I pick up seems to have the saturated fats and I don't want to end up with heart trouble.
Okay - I'm going to turn in soon, and Alex is in the kitchen again reading - we are keeping the strangest summer sleeping hours and I worry because he has school in the morning, but for some reason his best two days have been these past two according to his teacher so I will at least turn on the Wii & maybe we'll get in a little exercise before we hit the sack! Night all! |

LOL Ladies - I am looking back at my message to see if I typed in what I ate today and noticed I spelled waistline - wasteline! but then I guess all that belly fat is a waste! Bad 2:30 a.m. joke. I was not very good today - it was a weird day cause I didn't feel like cooking, and I was a little bad.
Brunch: McDonald's Chipotle Grilled Chicken Wrap - tore off a lot of the extra tortilla - split a small fries with Alex & yes I had a vanilla ice cream cone (ouch) - that's hard to 'fess up to.
Dinner: A large bowl of strawberries & the last of my creme fraiche.
Snack - not very long after my strawberries about 4 slices of lowfat pepperjack cheese.
Okay so now I'm going to turn on the Wii Fit - I am a little hungry - not sure what I'll have tho. Talk to you later! |

Bernie, I use a meal delivery service. So, I cannot take credit for the meals....although I do choose them. Barbara, I have both Wii items. I like the Active a little better, because it is a little more "hard core". Its really nice again this morning, we may see a quick thunderstorm like yesterday. It poured and then dried up super quickly. For today: Breakfast Cajun Style Egg White Omelet with, Bell Pepper, Onion, Turkey Sausage & Roasted Roma Tomato Lunch Asian Flank Steak on Whole Wheat Roll with Szechwan Style Slaw and Peanut Sauce. Dinner Fillet of Cod with Orange Tea Leaf Sauce with Whole Wheat Fettuccine Pasta and Steamed Asparagus Snack Mini Veggie Egg Rolls with Peanut Sauce Dessert Key Lime Cheese Cake Hope you all have a nice day. |

Sue...thanks so much for the info on Laughing Cow and the hielito....you are always so helpful!!! Good point about the yogurt at night...I think I had always tried cc and fruit before when I had my trouble sleeping....I also wondered if its because I'm further in the zone now that I don't wake in the night hungry as I also find that I feel a lot fuller after meals than I used to...maybe my stomach has shrunk over time
Bernie...ahhh they grow up so fast don't they? I miss having little ones so much...a few years changes so much. Thanks for your suggestions for thawing the hielito a little....I'm sure this is going to become one of my bedtime favourites!!!
yesterday's accountability (weight down to lowest again - same as 2 weeks ago, yes I'm a yo-yo!): S: 1/4c plain nf yogurt, 1/2tsp macadamia (1/2B) workout: 30min treadmill, brisk walk 2.2miles B: omelet (2whites, 1egg, 2Tbsp salsa, .5oz nf cheese, 1tsp OO), green smoothie (spinach, 2celery, 1/4c pineapple, 1/4c peaches), 9 almonds (6=nf protein, 3=dropped carb) (2.5B) L: chicken souvlaki, greek salad, olives, small amount of tzatsiki (lunch at mall) 3B S: 4 stalks of celery filled with 4 wedges laughing cow light cheese (1B) D: 3oz turkey burger, 1tsp OO, on 1/2 ww hamburger bun, large salad, greek dressing, 3 black olives (3B) S: popcorn (I know...gotta get more hielito in the freezer!!)
I read a recent post by Sue in another thread that if you are taking birth control you may benefit from dropping a carb and adding a fat block to meals....I'm going to give this a try and see if it helps with my yo-yoing. My weight this morning is a new low...so I'll stick to this for awhile and see if it helps.
Have a great day everyone!

Hey everyone! Just seems that things are so busy these days! I am dealing with all the work that piled up on me last week when I too a few days off. And my brother-in-law has been in the hospital again, but seems to be on the mend now. He is weak, and will need some rehab before he can go back home. Everyone is trying to deal with this, and so things are a bit unsettled. I am going to a baseball game tomorrow nigt, minor league. And, Friday is the Relay for Life in our area, and I am on the team, we usually set up our tent and camp overnight. So, will definitely stay busy. I think the weekend will be a "relaxing" weekend, hopefully! Meals today: B-strawberry smoothie (seems to be working ok on days that I don't go swimming) L-canned chix breast with hummus mixed in, spread into a high fiber wrap (one block carb), and a nectarine S-marinated tomatoes, string cheese D-leftover burger, slice bread (one block carb) to go with it, another nectarine S-?? |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.
8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured
Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.

- Oil conversion to ethyl esters
- Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
- True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.
Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.
A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.
Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.
Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.
Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3
Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
